As a rasika , perhaps each of us can have more liking to rAga bhAvam(that brings musical excellance) than sAhitya bhAvam(that brings bhakthi) , but as a musician it is always best to balance. The truth atleast to me is both are symbiotic. Possibly 1 out of 100 are able to consciously do that with a right balance. To me Dr T lokanadha sharma did achieve that finest of fine balance . I was assuming he will have a style perhaps more closer to nedunuri gAru or a voleti , but the biggest surprise to me was he was a disciple of chitoor subramania pillai. Can I say he is the only performing vidwan from the chitoor school .

Missed the first nAttai just came towards the end .What a bhairavi rendition it was , he internalized every line slowly and steadily and just as this bhairavi slowly moves and picks up steam , he did the same for the swarajAthi .A stunning 25 minute rendition. kanchi kamAkshi with kanchi maha swami's photo with goddess saraswathi and lakshmi in the background was a perfect stage.

Detailed sAveri rAga alApana following bhairavi that was perhaps not the best of sequence , but he sang sAveri beautifully in the neraval and he was again delivering every line with bhakthi.Swaras in SAveri started excellently but he did not finish it too well.

There was a very beautiful Anandabhairavi krithi by his dad Brahamshri T Venkatasubrahmanya sAstri , the lines strangely appeared not as a manipravAlam but teleguish sanskritized thamizh krithi. The pick of the day in full was he taking subhapantuvarAli. Rendition was outstanding , though this usual krithi in AnnamAcharya is sung in revati(only heard from Smt MS ammA) , he sang brilliantly in subhapantuvarAli bringing in both rAga bhAvam and bhakthi rasam . THe neraval in the line "eguvanE SrI vENkaTESvaruDElika", I did notice Shri SRJ mamA who was one row in front of me was in tears .

The main in harikAmbOdhi was a mixed bag , his alApana had lot of shades of kamAs , but the violinist played 100% in harikAmbOdhi. The neraval (3rd one) was very good , the swaras were bit short he tried to go high speed but just lost pace half way thru.

Another 2 numbers from his dad's krithi base followed both were very good , perhaps he need not have song 4 krithis from his dad's list ,particularly hamsAnandi and subhapantuvarAli overlap could have been avoided . The big surprise was he sang pavamAna krithi in two speeds for about 4 minutes.

The accompanist were all just playing in a mediocre standard .The violinist could have given more azhuttham, the mridangist was very good , the ghatam artist was playing very lightly. Their tani was just average .

Overall a very good to excellent concert, one should try to hear this vidwan for experiencing the rare chitoor school.

BTW this sabha kalakruthi is in chetpet ,one has to give a lot of credit to this seceretary.SHe fights mylapore and T NAgar domination and helps egmore and chetpet crowds , but unfortunately there is never more than 50 takers for any concert here in this sabha. A writeup of the sabha and seceretary (smt rajammA VenugopAl) is in the below url.

http://www.hindu.com/fr/2008/12/05/stor ... 280400.htm

Incidentally this seceretary madam keeps on chatting non stop during concert :( ,she was very silent most of the time.(the music of Dr Lokanadha sarma was indeed the only reason :)).

A great artiste - heard him on Jan 1 last season at Indian Fine Arts - the pity was there were 10-15 people in the audience. And he was clearly put off at the start of the concert when he hadn't even begun the Charanam of Vatapi and the audience started clapping! When he renders a Mayamalavagowlai, Saveri or Shubhapanthuvarali, one litreally has tears.

I do know what you mean, Kji :-) Thanks for your plan to organize his concert. I have heard him a few times in Mumbai and his music is very chaste and pristine. Very enjoyable...

BTW, a very interesting point. I wanted to listen to this vidwan, when one of our great thyagarAja bhaktha recommended casually in the post.Incidentally I asked him many times whose music this rasika likes , he never answered because he felt he was not qualified to answer that , but just made this post.

How beautiful is web and the carnatic forum?

divakar: I have heard an MDR recording of this for sure. I am not sure if I have it. Will dig through my tapes since for sure I don't have a digital copy. Perhaps Kji will be able to help quicker! :-)

I am glad to see there are others besides me who appreciate this vidwan. He has not got the recognition he deserves. I always make it a point to attend his concerts, have been doing it for nearly 30 years. He is one of those original singers with a lot of imagination and creative ability. Has an excellent voice also, something rare among Carnatic musicians

I downloaded a recording of Tappi Bratiki by Sandhyavandanam Srinivasa Rao from this forum, most likely from the akshaya patram, Coolkarni.
