There are so many Bani's around such as Lalgudi Bani, Semmangudi Bani, DK Jayaraman Bani, Musuri Bani etc.

What exactly is a Bani?
Can anyone have a Bani after their life time?
If a singer consistantly sings in a given way, does that become a Bani and is it followed through by generations? If so, what about the original composer's thoughts?
What are the restrictions?
When does one draw and line and say that is a "Bani" versus the singer is singing wrong.
Is Padantram a different name for Bani? If not, what is it?

A good topic for discussion.I feel Bani is a guide / way / style which a Guru tries to incorporate to students in general while singing a kriti, swarams etc.

Padantharam to me refers to the type of sangathis which a Guru adopts in singing a particular kriti which is followed by his students.Whether the student follows that sangathis or not is totally left to the individual without disturbing the bani / style.

Sri KVN had his own bani or style which he propagated very well to the rasikas without much giving importance to the padantharams(correct me if i am wrong)

Bani is a something which percolates from a certain school but padantharams are a set of pattern singing which one needs to give more importance than the bani.

More inputs from other rasikas appreciated.

My 2 cents,

Padantharam, is focussed on the learning aspect, or the student. One does not refer to an accomplished singer following a padantharam, however for an upcoming artist, we could hear something like 'nala padantharam'.Before a student is able to represent a particular Bani, he/she should have a solid padantharam.

Bani on the other hand is nothing but a well-defined, identifiable traits in a musician or in other words the musical style. Especially the past masters had different banis like GNB,ARI,Musiri,Chembai, MMI,SSI,MDR etc. Now all these musicians had their unique banis, but not all were followed. For eg, when we hear TVS, we can clearly say that he follows MMI bhani, and same with Vijay Siva for DKP/DKJ bhani.

But a large majority of today's musicians, we are witnessing an amalgamation of different bhanis, and the reasons are exposure to different musicians and multiple gurus.

Bani refers to a style of singing. It does not pertain to any single song. For e.g. GNB bani will evoke brigas, brisk passages of swaras, MMI bani will refer to simple and sarvalaghu swarams, MDR bani may mainly refer to chowka kala singing.

The padantharam on the other hand, refers to the way of singing a kriti. If you listen to the same kritis in different schools, they will have different sangatis and even the tune may differ although they may still be in the same raga. Since earlier time, the sishyas lived with guru, they might have imbibed both the bani and padantharams. But in today's world with music of different schools available more easily, the padantharam is starting to get mixed.
