I have been reading on Tanjore Quartet and here is an excerpt from the info i have that is available on the web ...
Here is a web document that may be of use to you...

There is an indepth write up on the Quartet and their compostions. This indeed is an excellent resource!

I don,t know what you refer to as 'Margam'... But some brilliant compositions from the Quartette include the Pada varnam Sarasijanabha in Kambhoji - Ata talam (Immortalised by Balasaraswathi) by Vadivelu; The javalis Muttavaddura(saveri), Jaanaro ee mohamu(Khamaj) and Cheli naenaetlu by Chinnaiah are of superior quality with rich potential for abhinaya. Their svarajathis in Yadukulakambhoji, Sahana, atana and Dhanyasi are all excellent pieces.
Devotional content is seen in Ponnaiah's Mayateetaswarupini(Mayamalavagaula) and deena rakshaka(Aahiri) Ranganathude in Saurashtra is particularly suitable for dance with madhyamakalam lines.
They also have a Begada thilana which I have never heard sung or danced to.
I wish someone would start a topic on the Quartette under Vaggeyakaras.

Their margam supposedly contained a condensed version of 8 items
1.Alaripu (in one of the 5 prime jatis)
2. jathiswaram (once again they have a lot of compositions on this variety)
3. shapdam (many of their shapdams and Varnams composed on their patrons. i have never seen /heard)
4. Varnam
5. Padams
6. padam/javali
7.Thillana
8. Mangalam
Balasaraswathi's famous quote on Margam refers to the items that were prescribed by the Quartet
( Pushpanpanjali and Kavuttuvam were probably considered to be more ritaulaistic and hence not included in their margam)
Gokulambadi shapdam is also a tanjore quartet composition.(probably Chinniah) Most shapdams they composed were in Kamboji though the practice of rendering it in ragamalika is now prelavent.
Varnams they indeed have composed many Tana and pada varnams, But Manavi is pretty famous.
They have quite a few thillanas to their credit. not sure if I have heard them...
Their Mayamalavagoulai composition which was their first composition is special because
1. Like their Guru Muthuswami Dikshathar they have tuned their first song in mayamalavagoulai
2. The song itself is structured I believe like the beginning vocal training methods, of , janta varisai, dattu varisai etc. embeded in the pallavi sangathis.
I found a lot of kritis listed in that document too.
There is an interesting incident when Maharajah Swati tirunal does not accept a Varnam tuned on him by sri Vadivelu who says that it was their practice to do so in many other courts.Maharajah feels that compositions should sing praises only of the Almighty (and not people). So Vadivelu gains the approval of the king by writing another version of the varnam in praise of Padmanabha Swamy
And it would definitely be nice to have a special thread on them.

The link does work, it just takes several minutes to load due to its length.
Thank you Raasikas, thats a really awesome resource!
I have a question though. I read that Chinnaya composed the Ananda Bhairavi Pada Varnam 'Sakhiye intha velaiyil', when I've read several websites/dance reviews, saying that it was composed by Ponniah. How accurate is this document?

I now can empathize with dancers who credit compositions to the TQ instead of naming 1/4. probably they want to be on the safer side:).
Ardhanarishwar, I am glad you liked the article. I was just so happy when I came accross it!
Mr. Raghu, the link does work. I just checked it. As Ardhanarishwar did say it is a really "indepth" article and will take a long time to download and show up on the screen..
Regards

Kunjamma,
A couple of things:
1) Start a new topic when you want something new, and do not add it on to a pre-existing, but unconnected topic, please!
2) Before asking for lyrics or meaning, try searching the forum for what you are looking for, with a couple of different spellings (example: aduvum and/or adhuvum; nI and/or nee; etc.); or alternately, you can use VK's power search using google - for example, 'aduvum rasikas.org' brought up the link to this page http://rasikas.org/forums/viewtopic.php? ... -iyer.html where it has already been translated.
THANKS!
(Note to mods: Can you please move posts #17 and mine (#18) to a separate topic?)
