Let us all rasikas join together to condemn the Mumbai attack and pray for safety of all, in particular all Mumbai rasikas and every one else in general, in that part of the country. Our sympathies to bereaved families.

Unfortunately, at the rate these incidents are occurring in India, we can generalise our condolences and make this thread a sticky. What upsets me is that time and again there is some obvious intelligence failure and nothing concrete ever seems to be done to even try to prevent future incidents. There is such governmental apathy and people are treated like mere expendable commodities rather than as individuals.

Its time for another grand Avathar of Sri Krishna. Terrorist strikes has reached a cresendo. I hope terrorism has been forgiven far too many times like Shisupala was forgiven by Lord Krishna. Now its time to retaliate. Lord Krishna could be in the form of 'united political will of the entire world' against a few Sishupalas. The sacrifice of people slain by 'Sishupala of terror" through cowardice and stealt must never go waste if the world is to be free. My condolences to the innocent victims of terror and the brave policemen and their officers bravely fighting from the front who sacrificed their lives, instead of sitting in their air conditioned ivory towers like many top bureaucrats. Its time for the people of India to elect right people who have the bravery and will to fight terror instead of eulogising it.

The tragedy at Mumbai is shocking. Sad that India has come to such a state that terrorists can attack us with such impunity.
Is this the world we bequeath to our children? Heartfelt sympathy to the families of the innocent people who have died in this madness and to the valiant commandos who have sacrificed their todays for our tommorows.

The Mumbai accident is a dastardly inhuman act of the terrorists which proves that there is no safety to the common man. All our heartfelt condolenses to all the bereaved families. Government thinks that their government is working properly. But, the common man thinks that there is no effective government at all. amsharma

All in the name of a religion and their God, whose leaders proclaim from roof tops that their God and their holy book abhor violence particularly against innocent women and children. If they mean what they say, these "leaders" should come out in the open and totally disown the perpertrators of this distardly act and declare them not belonging to their religion.

No. Those leaders, either of their country or their religion will never do but, on one hand prolcaim the sayings of their holy books from their roof tops or even country tops or world tops and on the other indirectly instigate the ignorant youth of their religion or country to do this kind of dastardly acts to spread their religion. In this way only they are able to become the 'leaders'. amsharma

While condemning such dastardly acts of violence we should also think of preventing such occurrences in the future. While we have a broad outliine we still do no know the motive of the perpetrators or of the instigators. It is interesting to observe the event gets dated as 27/11 here abroad translating into another 9/11. If the idea were to teach a lesson to Foreigners using Indians as the expendable scapegoats then it becomes the job of our Govt to teach them that we are not that cheap and they should carry out their 'fishing expeditions' elsewhere. While listening to CNN, I was shocked to hear a Mulla brazenly suggesting that the end to such violence will come if everybody was to embrace Islam which ironically is the synonym for peace. We have already paid a heavy price travelling down that road for centuries. Perhaps we are at the cross roads again needing to sacrifice some more of India's territorial integrity to preserve the native culture. After all the ghost of Sardar Patel may claim again that he was right and Gandhiji was wrong!

CML, you are spot on...even at the time of the mumbai blasts, years ago, any condemnations from these mullahs came very late, reluctantly and paid only a lip service to the people who had sufferred this holacost. I will not go the route of using the broad brush on this religious community, but it has to be said, they continue to carry the flag of "we have been wronged" time and again in spite of every effort being made to absorb them into the main stream of public life. "Islam" might have meant "peace" in those days, even though history does not bear witness to such definition. It certainly means, based on events taking place in the world around, cowardice, injustice to women, totalitarianism, subjugation of people against their will.

Punrvasu,
With tolerance towards fellow humans in our hearts. Don't laugh at or condemn my what seems like a naive statement. Little drops of water--each person shedding prejudices of the kind which have nothing to do with an individual but to a particular region, religion or community that this individual belongs to--makes a mighty ocean. If only each of us stops for a moment and considers that all violence of such unbelievable proportions found their sprouting ground in a filed of intolerance! While one may dispute this by saying that this is the story of history, it is good to remember that every once in a while, there emerged those men and women who believed in and practiced love for all humanity. Supposing we say that this won't work today, I ask you: what else will? Our animosities dictating us, are we going to go about destroying each other to extinction?
If all the fighting has not made things any better, a sense of fellowship cultivated among us might improve our lot, as outmoded as this thought may seem to many.
Those with political ambitions and immeasurable inhumanity have turned this world into a field of divisions and atrocities. As insurmountable as it seems, if we cultivate a sense of dignity and goodwill among us, we will end up with a better world for our children and their descendants...

Any sensible indian would abhor violence in any form carried out by any one irrespective of religion, caste or creed. While all of us whole heartedly condemn this vicious attack by a mad group belonging to one religion, care must be taken, particularly, mumbaikars, of the activities and utterances of certain hindu groups from with in. While their attitudes towards islam is well known, their intolerence permeates to even people coming from states other than maharashtra. Intolerence and non-acceptance of certain conventions, at a basic level, leads to arguments ending in carnage and destruction. So let us be aware of our own actions and reactions from with in. Let us live by the philosophy of "live and let live". Let this terrorsism not lead to more "revenge" actions on other innocent people who had nothing to do with this current act. Let us all keep a cool head and pray to the Almighty that this moment will pass to be replaced by peace and serinity in our beloved land.

Just to add to what others in this thread have said. I was at the scene when the operations were going on..I am still unable to wipe out whatever I have seen. Words and condolences cannot really soothe for those who have lost the near and dear ones. What really frustrated us was the way politicians took this an cheap stunt to visit the place and blame each other. We as a nation should have come together and be united. But unfortunately the politicians are more worried about their security...Salute the army and the police force..I just hope and pray that such gruesome attacks don't happen anywhere in the country...

shocking though this latest incident is, avoidable loss of life has become a routine affair in india.
the knee-jerk responses by most in media are just lot of cant and at best naive, platitudinous or unimagnative. indians dont think twice before endangering their fellow citizens on the road, at the workplace or even at home.
See:
http://nitawriter.wordpress.com/2008/10 ... dent-rate/
"Road accidents last year - more than 130,000 dead, set to increase to to jump to 150,000 (per annum) by 2015."
http://www.enews20.com/news_Traffic_Acc ... 00221.html
even by most conservative estimate or even cooked-up, cooked-down rather, official figyures, the statistics on road-deaths should make terrorism-related violence seem trivial.
and we the great indian public clamouring for anti-terrorist laws, fbi-style agency. what rubbish.
so called anti-terrorist laws only will lead to more gujarat style ethnic cleansing or or kashmir style abuses. basic policing is need first.
at least these terrorists fight for a cause, although crazy and unjustified. the honourable indian citizen driving on wrong side, jumping redlight and paying off the traffic pig is even more contemptible.
how many of us bother to go to the police and register complaints. only cynical attitude of nothing will happen, no use, timewaste etc. is our culture. that is why last week some police officer actually spat on a motorist whose car he banged into. the poor maintenance and road maintenacne claimed many lives in madras during rains. do we see bannertoting citizens demanding action? no. only 5star hotel guest lives are valuable.
"According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB, 2006 figures), Tamil Nadu (14 per cent of all accidents) has maximum accidents in the country". not surprising. dmk govt has worst record of enformcemnt law and order. led from the top. the flipflop on helmet wearing by CM is classic example. after disgraceful dismissal in 1990 for not dealing with lankan terrorists, public has voted them back. during this regime obvioiusly unroadworthy and dangerous vehicles like motorised fishcarts have made a comeback. lots more dubious achievements.
let us look inward. we get govt and politicians we deserve.

As expected many 'Anniyan' kind of replies talking about overall Corruption, political process, secular peace, etc etc.. I am not sure people are really looking at some fundamental issues, at least from the overall responses, that we are seeing so far.
NDTV calls it India's 9/11 & 9/11 happened in less than 2 hours and the entire nation was shocked. In 11/26, these terrorists had for more than 60 hours, the entire nation in its knees. It is a clear case of Security and Operations failure.
This terror attack exposed India to the whole world, in terms of system inefficiencies and lack of control measures. This is a deep wound and we cannot expect it to get fixed overnight. But, for a change to occur, it should start from the people and go up all the way till the Top.
Short term changes can be executed Top - down, but for a long term change, it should happen Bottom - up.

As an eyewash some changes will be executed either at Top or Down but not from Top to down or Down to top to attract votes and the people need not be surprised if the same is repeated in some other place.Unless the knowledgeable people take proper and timely care in all the relative aspects this country cannot survive though potential. amsharmakadambam wrote: This terror attack exposed India to the whole world, in terms of system inefficiencies and lack of control measures.

Imagine 10 people creating such a mayhem. But given the cosmoplitan nature, added with indifferent attitude of this city, we will continue to have this kind of issues time and again. You are helpless. When you leave the house you are not sure of reaching back. My colleague's close friend was also shot who generally do not go out. But fate has decided otherwise. He worked for SBI.
Terrorists have blasted all the avenues in Mumbai, Be it is bus, train, hotels. I still feel this is a curse on this country or we are too patient quoting "SaNadhana Dharma"........ Every year I keep worrying about 6th December in Mumbai as this is the day of Babri Masjid Demolition.
sympathies to bereaved families and innocent victims

I know what you mean, Ganesh. The politicians are well-fed wastrels, no doubt, but I would hardly call the people of this city indifferent. Daily life here is hard for most citizens, commuting is brutal, and working hours are long. People are here because they give their hard work to the city which gives them success in return. The valor of Mumbaikars like Mr. Zende [CST announcer], Mr. D'Souza [Mumbai Mirror photographer] and Inspector Ombale [who gave up his life grappling with the terrorists] shows grace, presence of mind and care for others' well-being - not indifference.vganesh wrote:added with indifferent attitude of this city
Fate is a funny thing, friends. I was due to have dinner last Wednesday night at one of my regular haunts, the Indigo restaurant right behind the Taj and around the corner from Cafe Leopold. My German colleague who was to join me called me earlier in the day saying that his flight from out of Mumbai would be delayed, and he was too tired to meet for dinner that night. We pushed our reservations back to Thursday... later, I found out that the terrorists had blazed through the very lane where the restaurant is located, while on their way to the Taj. I guess the world will have to suffer my singing for a little while longer

I just hope that some concrete good and genuine progress for people will eventually catalyze from this event. The cynic in me says no, the optimist says of course it will. I, unfortunately, have a sneaking suspicion as to who will win...

What about the Major Unnikrishnan and many other soldiers who had laid their lives in this battle? I think it is time that we start recognizing Indians as whole rather than Mumbaikar etc. Terrorists attacked India, not just Mumbai.

I guess nothing is going to change unless we do something about it.
Resuming the cricket matches, December season will bring back to our normal life until we hit on to another attack.
Already politicians are resigning only to emerge on a later time. We will pay our taxes and keep going like this.
PM, defence minister, Home minister, Law minister, president etc and everyone in the present Govt
are least efficient in their current role. They are there because they will be sincere to
congress president. Can n't we have the most efficient persons in these roles.
What happened to Deshmukh for taking RGV?
What Kerala CM had to do for disrespecting a martyr' sfamily?
What happened to RRPatil for a relaxed attitude.
What happened to Bangkok govt in the airport siege.
All of these happened in 2-3 days.
Not because mumbai terror happened. It has been happeneing since 90s.
But simply because Agitated people spoke in media and they sent the right signals to the politicians to take responsibility for the debacle.
Do we have an alternative in the next election. I think opposition seems to be no different. But donot worry that there is no solution. The only
soluton is that our politicians need to change themselves.
What we need to do?
Donot watch cricket matches.
Donot watch decemeber seasons.
Donot watch movies?
Donot pay taxes, phone bills, water bills, electricity bills.
Only for few days?
This is the only way to make our politicians wake up and do their duty.
This non cooperation (gandhigiri) does not work with terrorist. But it will work with our politician to correct themselves and
hence the system in India. And the media will keep announcing flash news of where all non cooperation happening. Gandhi
will be smiling from heaven thinking his ideas seems to work even without he being here.
After fixing the domestic system and problems , Only then we need to go and do something about the terror camps outside.
With the current system, we will fail miserably in the war with heavy casualities.
Think.

Mentioning as " politician" in general is itself a weakness or reluctance on our part instead of pinpointing Congress party which has brought the Nation to this level by its minority appeasement and pseudo secularist policies.

It is a shame that former President Abdul Kalam has not come out and condemned these attacks.
Warning: While you can express your views make sure the language is not offensive or denigrating other groups. This is essentially a CM Forum and not the place for venting Political Views.

You have correctly put your finger on the sore spot. It is indeed a question of Culture vs Secularism. In the modern world the latter will not work. Even if we are tolerant we cannot expect the other groups to be equally tolerant. Gandhiji learned the most painful lesson sacrificing over 100,000 human lives and History's greatest migration of population. Jinnah had correctly assessed the situation and did warn the Indian Leadership. They never learned and perhaps never will. But then the move has to come from the grass-roots population. India has to become a Federation of Nations each having their cultural identity but cooperating economically and socially; a Comity of Nations almost a miniature World Federation.
Let us think in terms of the thousands of innocent lives that may still be lost if do not act decisively!

I am not sure how population or multiculturalism were the cause for this act of terror. And why are the politicians being blamed? Because, they remained politicians even during times of crisis and failed to step up to the leadership roles they were supposed to fill in.
Yes, Terrorism is not that big a problem for us as much as our unfortunate neighbors. So even more important to have a strong fence around the house when i know my neighborhood is not safe. Why is this incident different than any other Naxalite muders or Jharkand etc? Because 10 young boys held a mighty nation of 1 billion on its toes for more than 60 hours, that too in the heart of the city.
Our response was as tragic if not more, than the actual terror attacks.
Finally regarding 'only 171', how about telling that to the man who lost 6 of his family members in few minutes!!!!

The politicians were spineless in 1993, 2001, 2006 and 2007 when blasts and attacks rocked locations like the Parliament, the Mumbai trains and so on. However, this is the only time the US and the upper class hangouts were targeted. The previous targets (by the so called Indian Mujahideen) were in busy markets that the elite classes wouldn't step into on a busy day!kadambam wrote:I am not sure how population or multiculturalism were the cause for this act of terror.
These attacks have created a furore because Americans, Jews and one of the prominent business houses of the country (Tatas) were attacked. The media picked on the story and plastered it all over the news ad nauseam.
They didn't do the same when 60 people died in a bus fire yesterday in northern UP.
That 10 young men held a country and security force on its toes is because of the planning of the attack - they took out the heads first and then the body of the force withered and struggled to fight back. Our defence and security is toothless because of corruption, and that too starts with the individual, not only the people we elect as politicians.
Scores of people died in the Bihar floods. Entire families and villages were wiped out because of the government's callousness. The tragedy of some upper and middle class civilians losing a few family members although painful is nothing as tragic. The bottom line is, to play vote bank politics, our leaders need an external punching bag, and Pakistan-based terrorists groups are that target now. These blasts and attacks will keep coming and there will be very little done. Unless we consolidate our nation, we cannot stand united against external threats.
