I know we'd done this thread last year and I suspect there won't be many changes, but have any new artistes emerged over the last year that we should watch out for? Last year we had Prassanna Venkataraman, Abhishek Raghuram, Amrutha Venkatesh, Ranjani Hebbar, Saketharaman, and of course the unearthing of the crowning jewel, Parassala Ponnamal. Over the last year, Amritha Murali seems to have distinguished herself, but I can't remember any others from the reviews I've seen. Please throw up a few names!

Of course, don't restrict yourselves to vocalists.

Since you said "don't restrict yourselves to vocalists", here's my input.

Praveen Kumar (Upendransir's grandson) is a great young mrudangist, he won an award from the music academy last year for Best Junior mrudangist. N. C. Bharadwaj is also very good, I think this year he is playing in the Music Academy for the first time.
Of course there are the sub-senior mrudangists (Delhi Sairam and R. Sankarnarayanan), I am a huge fan of both of them.

While it is probably not fare on my part to include my son K. Sathyanarayanan (keyboard artiste) in this list, I sincerely request forum members, if they can spare to listen to a song or two atleast, to attend a live concert or two of his Carnatic on Keyboard presentation during this December. I also welcome criticism / opinion which would really help him.

Fyi he is performing for Brahma Gana Sabha 24th Dec'08 from 345 - 615 pm with Sri B.U. Ganesh Prasad on Violin, Sri Trichur Narendran on Mrudhangam and Sri Vaikom Gopalakrishnan on Ghatam, Mylapore Fines Arts on 28th Dec'08 from 3 - 5 pm, 6th Jan'09 Padma Sarangapani Trust 630pm apart from other concerts for which i shall give details this weekend.

It is just a request and hope members who are in Chennai would spare little time to attend and forward opinion/comments on his performance.

TNS Krishna has also made good strides - 3/4 years back, while the technical expertise was evident his concerts tended to lack proportion and balance but he has really matured now. BMK Jr and Sikkil Gurucharan are of course making rapid strides towards the top slot. Not sure if Salem Sriram is travelling to Chennai this season (based in the US I think) but if he is, he deserves to be included for sure. Same goes for Palghat Ramaprasad. I also liked what I saw of Aditya Prakash last year. AS Murali, mroe commonly heard on the ghatam , is also a fine vocalist. MR Subramanian, another PSN student was shaping up well 2-3 years back although I have not heard him recently. Rama Krishnan Moorthy bagged several awards at the youth talent hunt last year and is a talent to watch out for...

Of course our two talented forum regulars, Prashant and Ram, are performing together (on 6th Jan I think). The there are others like Sankirnam, Sandeep Narayanan, Ravikiran etc., all of whom must be having busy scheduled during the season...wishing them all the best again.

I am pretty sure I am missing out many others here...

Net, net there is much to look forward to, this season. Request to members to please post their opinions on youngsters they hear...

Suma,
The best to Sandeep Bharadwaj. Will try and catch a concert of his. You had asked about RasikAs meeting during the season. Note that a new thread has been started on that by Sam Swaminathan, our NZ member who is the brother of the eminent mrudangam player ()also among RasikAs performing artiste-members--Mannargudi Easwaran. Keep a tab on that thread and you will know the place and the time. We had a great time meeting many RasikAs last season...

Vijay and Sankirnam,
Will keep in mind all the names. RasikAs member and member's daughter Sri Ranjani Santhanagopalan seems to have risen among the young lot in the past year. She is singing in many venues this season.
Looking forward to Prashant and Ram's concert of course...

Try to make it to J.B.Sruthi Sagar who plays the flute. From what Suma says above Dec 20 12-1.30 could be the time slot to catch two youngsters in one go.

haha...yeah it has..

here is that portion of the article:

--------
A RASIKA's WORLD OUT THERE
--------------------------------------

The rasikas take their job seriously.Even before the sabhas announce their schedules and awardees, rasikas analyse the possible contenders for the various awards, the top performers of the year and the young talents to watch out for.Days before the season kicks off ,they hold discussions on technical aspects, learn more about ragas, compositions and composers, and review concerts. And helping them are websites and online forums such as RASIKAS.ORG,carnatica.net,chennaionline.com.
Take for an instance Bilahari's post on rasikas.org which says,"Have any new artistes emerged over the last year that we should watch out for?" or another post by Vijay on the same forum which says,"The full impact of the downturn is still to be felt here...As far as the end consumers,we rasikas, are concerned,I dont think paying Rs 50 or Rs 100 for tickets is going to affect us"

-THE TIMES OF INDIA

Yes we better "take [our] job seriously" and mind our P's and Q's. Especially the people over at the preposterous TMK thread!

congrats bilahri; cameo, one more of our members is also mentioned in the article-
"It is interesting the way we network, share views and learn from each other. There are many gifted folks on the forum," says Rajee Krishnan, composer and member of a popular internet forum on Carnatic music.

The article was the second in a series by Vidwan Shashikiran for the TOI. He will be writing on several other topics through the season. The first article was on musicians' preparation for the season. It is here:

No Coolji - After TMK's scathing attack in the Indian Express, I don't have the courage to pick up the pen for any mainstream publication!

This time I will cover it "exclusively" in rasikas.org ;-)

He was not very happy with the reporting format - especially scores for various aspects like creativity, repertoire etc.
