Maharajapuram Santhanam has sung Dikshitar's nandagopala supposed to be in raga yamunAlakyANi. But it sounds quite different. Someone knowledgeable in recognizing specific notes please listen to it and comment. Thanks.

The link is somehow incorrect. Please go to musicindiaonline.com and select Maharajapuram Santhanam (after clicking on music listing). Scroll down to the given song.

I got it at http://www.musicindiaonline.com/s and it is a beautiful rendition. I see similarity to the song where the verse go like "yera unara, nilakkadal" I cannot put finger to the raagam.

CMLover Sir: your help please.

Thanks Lakshmanji

Sri.Santhanam had sung this song in the Sadja Griha and had used all the seven notes of the 65th mela, He had also used sudha Madhyamam at few places in the song in addition to the sampoorna swaras. Rag Yamuna kalyani has two versions, one with nishadam note and the other without nishadam(varjya). This song is sung using the nishadam note.
Because the song is sung in the sadja griha, it has the 'sankeerna' effect giving traces of rags Saranga, Kalyani, saranga tharangini. The yamunakalyani raga bhava/chaya is rarely felt in the song and may be the reason it gives doubts in the listener's mind for idendity of raga, that too after announcing it as Yamunakalyani. Rag Yamunakalyani is most commonly heard sung in the Madhyama Sruti and this fact is accepted by music lovers for idendity of Yamunakalyani. The popular song " Krishna nee Begane Baaro" comes to any listener's mind first when any song is set to rag Yamunakalyani. In this song, having known it is Yamunakalyani, the familiarity to Krishna nee Begane is not felt anywhere in the song. Probably, this may be the reason, according to me, we got a chance through this thread for discussion. I may be wrong also and hope some experts could tag this song's raga, if it is not Yamunakalyani. Can be a misra Yamunakalyani?

I have a feeling that this song more resembles rag " Nand "
of Hindusthani Music, due to the prayoga of M1 as a foreign note. Rag Nand has both the madhyamams in its phrases.
The famous Hindi song" Tu Jahan Jahan Chalega " in the Hindi film 'Mera Saaya' sung by Lataji is a popular song set in Nand rag and has a resemblence. Sri. Nikitha Sharma has sung a purandaradas bhajan in rag Nand. Please listen to the song in this link in Youtube.

I have heard Rag Punnagavarali also sung in sadjagriha, and at the same time the raga chaya never got diluted also. Punnagavarali is also a raga commonly sung in the Madyamasruthi only. It is none other than the great HH.Haridas Giri Swamigal who had sung the Ashtapadi No.16 in the rag Punnagavarali using the shadjagriham. A marvelous piece to listen.

Please excuse me if I am incorrect in my views and request to guide me, if so.

Radhe Krishna
Hariharan.

Respected Sri. Lakshman Sir, Thank you , but still I have doubts about my write-up and explanation to your thread. I wish I may be corrected for any wrong views .

The Punnagavarali song viz. Ashtapadi 16th, sung by H.H.Haridas Giri Swamigal is uploaded here. Please listen and comment on my views about this song also, to correct myself. The link is:

Did you mean to say this is sung in normal shruti, instead of madhyama shruti?

BTW, MD's masterpiece JamboopatE in yamunA kalyAni is never sung in madhyama shruti, AFAIK.

Finally I got the link from MIO and got to hear this. In my view he is singing at madhyama shruti only. Accordingly he is not going beyond the nishadam. He does use occasioanlly suddha madhyamam which is characteristic of YK. The reason it does not sound classical YK is due to the fact that he does use Kalyani prayogas somewhat liberally. Hence we are confused. On the whole it is YK only. Maybe we can call it Mishra something if we like!

This is actually B.Rajam Iyer's rendition of Jambupate mislabelled as Santhanam.

Thanks Vidya!
I had my suspicion about the low voice!
Would not have guessed it to be of B Rajam Iyer!(Am I right he is singing at shadja shruti ?)
