Varmaji: You are blessed and you do not need the income from music. That opens up a vast opportunity to spread CM through www for the benefit your fans in particular and rasikas in general.

Dear Amalikaji,
The enjoyment of music is so subjective that what is music for some might sound like noise for others!!! So you are entitled to your views.
Now, the answers to your questions. Why should any musician who has been invited for a programme care to know who has not been called?!!!!
As Deviji pointed out Shri Rama Varma is the organiser of two major festivals, two events that have put tiny Trivandrum on the Carnatic map for the pristine quality of the music and the high standards of the musicians. These are completely devoid of political clout. I wonder if you have visited either of these festivals. Then you could have seen how it has attracted rasikas from all walks of life.
The vidushi Parasala Ponnammal has said in interview after interview Shri Rama Varma’s role in persuading her to sing at the Mandapam. And we have seen her creating waves in Madras. Similalry Amrutha Venkatesh and Thamaracad were the two new singers (new to the Mandapam) who were introduced by him.
Here is a link to the audio podcast in which Sanjay Subrahmanuyam and Siriam chat with Shri Rama Varma. They talk at length about the Navaratri and Swati Sangeetolsavam.

http://sanjaysub.blogspot.com/

And where does the element of competition creep in. That sounds even more convoluted. IN fact, given his grasp over lyrics and bhava, there are many rasikas who wish he would give more performances.
From your earlier post, you sound like a frustrated dancer! : )
thank you

Prince or pauper, ruler or rustic,
not being petty makes one regal--
le petit prince ou mighty monarch,
laughing it away speaks of nobility..

'God save the prince', sings CML--
In 'english note' too, if you will--
A crownless prince is still a prince--
'My karma is in mere appellation
Nothing more', says citizen queen...

Arasi ji and CMLover both obviously share,
A level of talent which is almost unfair.
So let me now stick,
In an old Limerick.
And bow my head low, without crown or much hair :-( *Sigh*

Phew!!! CM Lover Sir, Arasi Madam and Varma Sir are taking us to head-reeling levels through their 'vyulpathi' in verses/limericks... may be we should start a thread for this?

Hari om.

I have joined in this forum only yesterday. I found this very useful and connectivities. I have my own views on certain posting here, and I would like to put this. It follows....before that my origin and some appreciation.

I am born and brought up in Trivandrum. I was brought up in the house of (late) Judge Sankara Narayana Iyer, who was very close to Sri Chithira Thirunal. I had this rare opportunity of accompanying him to various place, one of them is religious visit to Kowdiar Palace. Since grandfather was very old (he passed away @ 101), my duty was to wait with hot water in a flask outside their discussion room. When he was 96, I was asked to sit with him in same room. Moment of Magic in my life, I will never forget.

Guess what's their discussion....who are going to come in Navaratri Mandapam or Kathakali artists for Temple festival etc. My grandfather was never a connosieur of music, but he was an active organiser by way of pulling sponsorship, other Government related activities.

Thanks to His Highness and my grandfather, I was forced to listen to music then. Now I feel, I am blessed for that forceful attendance at various concerts. Here, I am, a good lover of CM.

Next follows....

Way back in beginning of 1990s.....the then DD had a program called "Daivathinte Naattil", conceived and directed by Sanjay.....for one of its episode, I suggested to take interview in Kuthiramalika. It was not open for public then. I requested my grandfather to give a letter and met up with some official at Kowdiar Palace and others. I still remember and brag myself that I was one among the first to organise a shooting there. Now when I see Swamy Ayyappan in TV, I just watch that place. Brings nostalgic memories, and still I can't believe I did in my early 20s.

Years gone by.......circa 2006....I am at New Mumbai and was making pradakshin at Hanuman Temple, Nerul. I saw one bearded person singing on a bench, with few mikes around him. A crowd of about 50 listening to him. He was continusouly disturbed by people walking around, praying, temple bells and mantras......nothing to deter his determination. Thats RV.

Then I decided, I will be part of this group which is organising these music programs and walked across. Introduced myself and requested them to add me up as a volunteer. Contrary to my belief, they readily agreed and told me that they are starting Navaratri Concerts. I was happy and sad.

Happy = because, I am back to my childhood. Sad = because, I was sure I cannot invite RV.

Now, with this pre-amble, let me enter to questions, posted few days back.

This is reply to Amalika, dt. 2/11.

I know of this gentleman, who is part of Shanmukhananda Sabha of Mumbai. A thorough gentleman he is, stands for his cause and at the same time adamant to the core that new artists should be given chance.

Temple which I did mention in my previous post, conducts Navaratri festival for last three years. I have seen him bringing new comers, upcoming artists as well as established people. If you are a keen listener to music, you will love their performance. If you are a keen fan of a person, you will not be satisfied. Because, here Quality is given importance, than Quantity.

In 2006, on a heavy rain, Sikkil Gurucharan sang for two hours. We all waited for him to finish. And Guru is a regular performer here.
In 2008, Gayatri I came and sang Amruthavarshini. Two days later, Gayatri II came. Ten minutes into her concert, it was raining cats and dogs. We were running helter skelter to cover surrounding, so that people sitting there shall listen to this 'gambhira' voice. Later, I read her experience at Nerul in her blog. I was so happy to read that.

While I was serving BPL Mobile at TVM for about six months, one Navaratri went through. And I did listen to songs, sitting at those steps, reminiscing my childhood. There I met RVs relative Aditya and had a chat for a long time.

These are few instance I highlight. I salute for the yeoman effort RV is taking to organise these two festivals.

2009, I was planning to make a trip to TVM - primary objective was to spend more time at Kuthiramalika. I have decided to change my employment now, so I have to wait till 2010.

So to reply to Amalika (RV = may I take this privilage) - All organisers are not greedy to make money. And I am not saying that there are no organisers, with their own way and / or choice of selecting people and rejecting people without reason.

Next post, says how I landed here......

My family members and friends always tease me, for being a staunch supporter of Travancore and Trivandrum in particular. I have this vague idea of organising a Swati Fest at Mumbai, at some point of time in my life.

To know its intricacy, how to get it done, I started browsing and seeking information from internet. I wanted to know more details of Ragas, main Kriti etc., so that I can replicate this here. Meanwhile, I wanted to contact somebody at Palace to seek permission to copy this kind of plan.

There I got to know the blogspot, chatspot, and rasikas.org.....hence I am here.

After reading all these posting, I am quiet happy. After reading RVs comments on organising & its effects, I am now sure that I need some more time to venture into such activities.

Keeping that plan at bay, but not coming back to this place and reading these wonderful posts.

I know I have taken lot of space, but I wanted to give my opinion and portray the other side too.

The author of the article Dr. Achuthsankar S. Nair has really done a great deal of work to write this well rounded piece.
