Now, we listen to different artists perform Purandara Dasa's kritis, in different ragas. How do we know which raga was the original one, in which Dasa himself sang? I listen to many of Dr BM Krishna's renderings, especially the ones with duets between a men's and women's groups.
So how authentic, ie, in the sense of what Purandaradasa himself used, are the ragas currently used to sing his kritis?
Thanks.

Sorry I do not have an audio link.
I just wanted to inform you it's a poem by Sri. Pu Ti Narasimhachar, a well known kannada poet of 20th century.
I believe it had been adopted to a kannada movie in the 1950s or 1960s, and music was composed by Veena Doreswamy Iyengar.
I was part of a predominantly kannada speaking audience that was delighted when Vidushi Nagavalli Nagaraj rendered this song in a concert here in Detroit in October 2006.

This is NOT a composition of purandara dAsaseagrowler wrote:I just found it on Youtube, athought the title is ridiculously mis-spelt - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cyAWpRb_33srasika_avishesha wrote:I remember listening to one song, "aalisu krishnana koLalina kare" . The lyrics are by PuTiNa ( P.T.Narsimhachar) and music composed by Doreswamy Iyyengar (in this movie) . Most of PuTiNa's songs are tuned by himself, which may have been improvised by other musicians.

If you can read Kannada, and are interested in traditional stories being retold in a new light, you might find the following interesting
tambUri mITidava.. bhavAbdi dATidava... : http://neelanjana.wordpress.com/2008/08/29/
P.S: This story was selected to be published in an anthology of short stories (a literary souvenir) at the Kannada conference being held in Chicago Rosemont Convention center, starting today [August 29- September 2]
PPS: If you can (or, sort of manage to) understand Kannada, but can not read the script - I suggest you to use our good Arun's transliterating engine to convert it to your favorite script. In fact at least one Rasika member has done it so already successfully.

I have a question that I had asked earlier, but am still not satisfied with the info.
Now, we have a huge collection of Dasa's compositions, but, how many of those did he attach to a particular raga? How many of those that are sung today in specific ragas, were also sung by Dasa in the same ragas?
Was the raga system in Dasa's time developed to an extent that the present-day renderings show?
I think, most probably, Dasa never sang any of his songs in a kacheri setting, because he was always on the move. So, does that mean, he did not originally sing his compositions in elaborate ragas, such as seen these days?

I don't know the meaning of 'Elaborate' ragas, but Purandara dasa used Gujjari, Padi, Malladi(malahari?), Nadanamakriya, Saindhavi, Aahiri, Mukhari, Saurashtra, Navarauj, Kamboji, Erukalakamboji etc.
Purandara Dasa's Contemporary Annamacharya used these and other now archaic-then extant ragas like Desaksi, Gumma kamboji, Samantha, Andhali, Mangalakaisika, Telugu Kamboji and Suddha Vasantam. Dakka, Lalitha and ghantaravam feature frequently in his songs.
While the copper plates with his songs(found in Tirupati and Ahobilam) had the Raga mentioned, there is no question of notation being written. While several artists choose to set their own tunes in exotic and quixotic ragas like kuntalavarali and hamsadhwani; few Scholars like SangeethaKalanidhi Rallapalli Ananthakrishna Sharma undetook painstaking research to understand the lakshanas of these ragas and have set tunes in the ragas denoted by annamayya.
Sri. Sarma's book published by the oriental Research Institute, Tirupati begins with the disclaimer that not of these tunes are annamayya's, but that the raga swarupa is as close to the original as possible.
The same is true for Purandaradasa.

This might interest you:rasika_avishesha wrote:I have a question that I had asked earlier, but am still not satisfied with the info.
Here is the link to post I wrote an year ago about internal evidence of Ragas used in Purandara Dasa's times -

I believe every composition of haridAsas was sung in *some* rAga - And if you consider rAgas like ShankarabharaNa, kalyAni, varALi and tODi as elaborate rAgas, then yes - he should definitely have sung his compositions in elaborate rAgas.

The article is in a lighter vein, ramakriya says, but considering the title, it is a serious subject!

Do you know where these articles were taken from?
I've got these articles translated to Kannada - to post it on the haridasa sampada website : http:haridasa.in/
and it would help if I know where/when these articles were published.
