Namaste,
I have completed my visharad 6 years ago but never compose any items before. I would like to learn and compose an classical item. Which item will be good to start??? I don't know how to start . Please help me with this.
Thank you very much.

Extending what Avnipriya suggested, Thillana could be an item to consider....as far as Thillana is concerned, in my opinion any Adi Taala thillana would be a good one to start with.
Mei Adavu where 3 speeds are executed would be at the beginning ...you could start with doing a simple adavu for 2 counts in 1st kaalam(speed) and then move onto 4 counts in 2nd kaalam and so on; after which you could use a couple of Avarthanams for each Korvai (segment). Ideally, a thillana would have about 5 to 6 korvais demarcated by Aradhis followed by a korvai or two for anupallavi and then finally the charanam.
