A very shocking news. The music field loses a famed and skilled exponent of the veena who stood for the tradition while being innovative as well.
Her music is a stellar example of the Karaikudi bhani, a bhani known for its unique technique of sound production, tonal purity and clarity and that breath-taking tanam. She was very particular that her veena sounded acoustic in her recitals. The last concert I had heard at the Music Academy a few years ago, when she was invited at the last minute to perform (to replace somebody else) is still fresh in my memory for her thrilling rendition of RTP as well as their trademark pieces like sarasa sama, padavini and so on.
Smt Rajeswari Padmanabhan was very friendly and was always supportive of other vainikas also. She has personally touched mine and my brother's life by making special detachable veenas that was originally designed by her. This design has since been adopted by many others. She also made an innovative permanent melam out of fibre glass (eliminating the wax).
May her soul rest in peace. May the Goddess Saraswathi give strength to her family to bear this irreplaceable loss.
Her music lives with us for ever.
