Very interesting - paradoxically innovative within a traditional framework!

the jersuits were not averse to adopting traditional methods of the respective regions for propagating their religion and philosophy. i know an entire clan of brahacharnam brahmins who were permitted to retain all their traditional methods when they embrased christianity and they were the famous brainly christians known as 'maris thoppu christians' in trichy.
the following associate thoughts come to my mind:
1. when adopting a different style let us not be in a hurry.
2. when others want to emulate us let us not be a stumbling block.
3. i recently saw saxaphone play in venkatachalapathy temple in JP Nagar Bangalore. i was very puzzled why nadaswaram was dispensed with. we are famous in collapsing traditional methods when we adopt an alien system. let us not do this.
4. in concerts let the emphasis be for unadulterated CM and not on thukkadas and pakodas.
5. let the untraditional instruments and methods take a back seat. (with due regards to them ofcourse)
5. Swasthi rasthunaha!

I watched Sonal Mansingh dance for THE BANYAN in 2005 , at Dakshin Chitra.
The theme was the story of a Prostitute who watches Jesus pass her street , from behind closed doors and then comes out into the open and cleanes herself with her own pure tears.
(I am not good at these stuff , but I was sitting in the front row thanks to Parveen Sultana who was to sing next.I had just then made a gift to her, of her own photo in her teens from Illustrated weekly and she went into raptures and invited me to the Green Room to see her practise and then spoke to the Organisers to get me a front row seat)
One moment , Sonal would dance the role of the prostitute and the next ,
Moving to the other side of the stage, she would become Jesus.
For 75 minutes , it was a breathtaking display and at such close range , I felt that the artist was really a GOD.
How can they show so many emotions , and make them jump and reach out to so many in the audience ?
(And I struggle to make someone in my own kitchen -who is busy cooking-know that I am angry , unless I start banging the table or chair !)
:P
The real GOD , I may or may not see.But the way these artists interpret HIM for us , this is more tangible and within my reach.
Not for a second , did I feel that the story was out of Sync with the type of Dance.
I vaguely remember it as the story of Lady Magdaleine, but i am not sure about these aspects.
What stayed with me was the impact of the dance.
any day I will opt for such a theme instead of the worn out
"Krishna Nee Begane Baro"
:D

And I forgot to add .
BANYAN is such an unbelievable Organisation.Just a few hours of interacting with them , and that too as a stray outsider...
They took me in, with such wonderful poise, grace and fine manners.Wonderful bunch of people, there.

There is most heart-warming episode of Trivakra in Bhagavatam. As kRSNa enters Mathura (before killing Kamsa) He sees a hunch-backed young woman of comely appearance passing with vessel full of sandal-paste. On questioning, she tells that she is a maid servant Trivakra, esteemed by Kamsa for her art of preparing sandal-paste. Having seen the two youth- kRSNa and balarAma, she offers sandal paste for them.

Her mind was bewitched by the comeliness, loving form and laughter of the two brothers. The brothers accept the sandal paste and apply on themselves. Then the kRSNa made up His mind to straighten the hunchback.

Pressing the forepart of her feet with His own feet and supporting her chin on the two fingers, raised her and straightened up her body. Lo, her hunch back is gone and she became a most beautiful woman.

She invites them home. kRSNa promises her that he will come after accomplishing the task for which he has come to Mathura.

Grace is when it is showered unasked.
IMHO, this could make a good dance item.

Exactly the same theme occurs in the life of Buddha which has been dramatized!

Somebody should choreograph Gandhiji's experience (as described in his 'Experiments with Truth') at SA which is more realistic!

From Fr Paul Poovathingal's webpage: http://www.thesingingpriest.com/news.htm
Enthralling Music concert at Rashtrapathy Bhavan
Thrissur
21.07.07

Fr.Dr.Paul Poovathingal CMI, Director of Chetana Academy ,Thrissur received a special mention from the President of India Dr.A P J Abdul Kalam during a classical concert held by him before a group of special invities at Rashtrapthi Bhavan. Fr. Paul is the first catholic priest to be invited for a perfomance at Rashtrabathi Bhavan. He is the desciple of both Padmasree K J Yesudas and Chandramana Narayanan Namboothiri.

Fr. Paul started his concert with the famous keerthana ‘Vatapi ganapathim’ Then ‘Salathulla Salamulla’ taken from the Holy Koran set to ‘Anandabairavi’ , ‘Sree Yesu Nadam Bhaje’(Aabhogi), ‘Jai ho jai ho’(kalyani) ‘Loka samastha’(Madhyamavathi) were presented.

As soon as the performance was over the first citizen of the country was so impressed by the performance that he called Fr.Paul for a personal meeting and congratulated him on the unprecedented performance. He went on to describe his performance as ‘one which is opening new vistas in the tradition of carnatic music’.

Fr.Paul was accompanied by Prof.Abdul Azeez [vilion] ,Guruvayoor Sanoj [Mridangam], Shornoor Rajesh [Ghatam]. They were all given personal gifts by the president Dr.A P J Abdul Kalam.
Curious to know if anyone has heard him.

Sorry,
I missed that one, but I am telling friends that there will be another vip event by a singing priest at Divine Retreat Centre, Muringoor - Potta, Kerala. (near Cochin). On July 27th 2008 Youth Conference the fusion guitarist/ singer priest Fr. Stan Fortuna from NYC will give a first indian debut after his recent concert before His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI at Yonkers, NY. Possibly he will integrate some CM into his fusion, if requested?
