Excuse me for the outre subject. But It fits in here.

After being here in Rasikas for sometime I was thinking -do I know anyone here? Or at least could we recognize someone here if I happen to bump on him?. The answer is simply no and I think that is how it is for most of us.

Even if you happen to bump on someone with whom you have participated in discussions , you would not know it is him even if you happen to sit next to him during a concert.

I do remember the lapel pin idea. But y? Are we from any mafia gang and is it for only our accomplices to identify us.

Our discussions here are healthy. Members here are musically resourced. Let us identify each other.
Most of us have only nick names and that way we want to remain completely ananymous.
There was a member by name vidyaarti and for quite sometime I did not know that it was NSG. That is not NSG's intention but that is how this forum is.

My humble suggestion is , should there be no glitch there should be a provision for us to upload a snapshot of us that will be displayed next to our names. it can be a basic jpeg recent pic. That way you get familarized with the faces and easily relate it to the person over a period of time.

This is need not be rule. It can be just a choice.

MODERATORS ARE YOU LISTENING?

DEAR MEMBERS , YOU CAN HAVE YOUR SAY..

The photos can just be in the profiles of the members who choose to show their faces. I don't think it is required to be in every post.

In fact our webmaster srkris did start out on that idea and found that the membership at that ime found it resentful. He may yet consider it if there is a unanimous voice from our membership!

I agree with Mohan, we do not want the picture against each post. So a photo gallery of sorts with an album of rasikas photos or as part of the profile. 100% voluntary. That will work.

you are right mohan, it need not be in every post but at least in the profiles of those who choose to . This should completely be upon one's wish. For some reasons if one wants to stay ananymous we dont mind and that is personal . I feel that this can easily unite the rasikas during concerts .

The profile should have an edit option where you can upload your pic. you can replace with a new one or so.
4000 members is not a problem and members can upload at their leisure.

I am surprised with the paucity of responses . Do people want to stay ananymous?

I believe my idea is good for a strong Rasikas.org community.

This idea has my vote going for it... although a 'vote' reminds one of politics. :) I find absolutely no reason why this idea should not be implemented.

thats a great idea... i was at a recent IT gartner conference and 'personalisation' was a big topic... not that we can make a 'facebook' inside rasikas but seeing each other will help and i am always curious if there are popular musicians amongst us... ofcourse people can remain anonymous if they want to...

There's at least one member's picture in the intro page: http://www.rasikas.org/intro.php
A prize awaits the person who can give the answer. :)

More than one!
Vidyaarthi (guru NSG), Mannargudi Easwaran, Gayathri Venkataraghavan, Uday and Rajna Swaminathan.
Are there any more? The Iyer Bros, perhaps?

Say for instance yahoo messenger . when you roll over the name there is an option to show the pic. sometimes the buddy shows his pic and some shows a football.

The same here. the pic can be updated to the profiles. but when you move the cursor over the name it could link to the relevant pic. this over a period of time makes us familiar with the members and their faces. and still if they want they can show their real names below the photo.

THIS IS NOT A DATING SITE AND I WONDER Y MEMBERS SHOULD HIDE THEIR IDENTITY AND STAY ANANYMOUS WITH PSEUDONYM.

THIS IS NOT A DATING SITE
Looks like nobody has been asking poor Ganesh_Mourthy out, then? :D

Is there an option to put the photo on the profile? Then people can use it if they wish.

There are all kinds of reasons why anonymity may be desired by some. Particularly in the music world, people may feel freeer to express their true feelings from the privacy of a pseudonym. Any young musician may find their career adversely affected by an unfavourable comment

Generally speaking, I would say that I made a mistake in using my real name on internet forums, and in making so much of my life public (there is only a modest amount here, much more about me elsewhere on the net).

A forum with a limited number of regular participants can create the illusion that we are in a private house with our friends, but that is not the case; it is open to the entire world. Mention your email address on the internet, for instance --- then sit back while the spam rolls into your inbox for ever more!

I love the interaction that I have experienced on the internet, and the actual meetings that have come of it (Goodness; that includes my wife!) but if I could go back ten years and start again, I would be a little more circumspect.

I request members to reply, including their credit card numbers, expiry date, security digits from the back, and full billing address... ;) ;) ;)

Like Nick said if one wants to preserve rasikas as a secret society , fine, he need not disclose his pic and identity. But obviouly we want to know each other and the reason y th idea of lapel pin.

If we want to identify with a cumbersome lapel pin , it is much easier and feasible through pic. Nick are you against lapel pin idea too? Member here want an abstract idea of lapel pin and does nt want a better one to be implemented

No, not at all; I've already supported it elsewhere, I like the lapel pin idea very much.

I like the idea of being able to recognise each other as rasika.orgs when our paths cross at concerts.

I'm not *against* the idea of adding photos to our profiles here --- quite a few of us already have either photos or links to photos on the forum anyway.

But people should be aware (and many are not) of the public nature of the net. It is not even a generation thing any longer; there are plenty of very technically-aware people, including a few here, far older than I am, and also plenty of naive youngsters.

I'm not against anything; I'm for being aware.

ganesh_mourthy,
A frequent writer on the Rasikas once said that he would rather stay with his mental pictures of fellow rasikas. When we do meet, we look different from the imagined image of others and they to us, of course. Then we get used to the new faces!
Want to know what Nick looks like? Recently, there were pics of his wedding in a nAgasvaram thread (?).
And here are his credit card numbers, checking account numbers, passport numbers......

Ahh... I forgot to ask for the pin number. Thanks Arasi!

It is fascinating to think of our impressions, and sometimes how wrong they can be.

I think my most embarrassing mistake was, in some argument or other a long time ago, to suggest that CMLover might be a youngster with less experience of life than I had! Oh dear; I hide my head in shame!

Nick,
Au contraire, be happy that you were paying compliments. I am sure CML was pleased. To be young at heart and to be thought of as young in age too by others is a luxury for those of us in our golden years...

Hindu philosophy says we go through several janmas. Some of us who are young in this life may be ancient souls and vice versa. Take a look at this video of Erode Anantharaman. Surely an ancient soul?
