Hello Friends,
I'm new to this website. Basically A Thavil Artist and presently learning Mridangam.
Recently I heard a recording from AIR Bangalore.
The singer was Papa Chudamani with the Title " MSS of those days". What a marvelous and melodious piece of singing. You can't make out the difference between this and the MSS singing.
They announced that, Papa chudamani was the most talented singer and unfortunately died in the age of 38.
Those days recording facility was not available - A sad story.

Do you have any info on Papa chudamani. Please reply.

Venu,
welcome to the forum. Good to see a thavil artist amongst us too !!

I have heard that NC Vasanthakokilam was a contender to MSS in those days and she died young too. Haven't heard of Papa Chudamani...did she hail from Karnataka ?

Venu - you need to try alternative spellings of names!

Yes, Venu must have searched "Chudamani" instead of "Choodamani"

While those links mention her name in passing (her Guru's name - Ambi Bhagavatar, and the fact that she performed in Kerala), I do not think that they answer Ramnath's question!

Ever since this topic appeared in Rasika, some thing triggered my memory and my childhood days. I realised that I knew this name but just could not figure it out. I was probably 6 or 7 then and living in Katpadi. And then it struck me that this had some thing to do with my anna, Easwaran. He was probably about 8 those days. His teacher, Sri Kuniseri Krishnamani Iyer used to mention in this name often. So I approached Easwaran, currently in US. This is what he wrote back....

"My Guru Sri. Kuniseri U. Krishnamani Iyer Used to play for her when both were in Bangalore. He used to speak very highly of her ability in singing slow tempo songs, with clear pronounciation and clarity. She was very good in singing RTP, swara singing too. I used to go with my guru for her concerts."

My little contribution on this subject.

In Early days My guru always talks very high of Papachudamani.I played mridangam for her concert when I was very young. Her voice was like NC Vasanthakokilam and MSS.

http://rapidshare.com/files/106518259/0 ... een_ma.mp3.
The parveen bit in the thread on Vocalists Octave range is the khayal that followed this speech.

Eswaran Sir...Namaskarams.and Welcome.Waiting eagerly for the earliest opportunity for a cup of coffee in your home.

Was she very young when she started singing? Was Papa her pet name or did it stand for 'Baby'? It was the custom to call a child artiste 'Baby so and so'. (Example: Baby Kamala, the dancer. When she grew up, she became Kumari. Kamala).
Papa Choodamani was well known but I do not remember what she looked like.

One of my cousins who is in her early 70s is also called Papa. Not just by her elders but by all of us too. We had an uncle who was called Papa but we addressed him as Papa Chithappa

From the various posts it appears that Papa Choodamani hailed from Kerala. Is my assumption right?

We are indeed blessed to have the attention and input from our most revered Vidvaans of CM. We are equally fortunate to have Coolkarni as the guardian angel who brings out the best from the vidvaans and shares his precious collections (and yes recollections!) with all of us. This Rasika Forum is indeed one happy Family! Let us keep it as such!

Or my experience in finding a flat in New Delhi as a bachelor boy in the 70s. While being a south indian brahmin boy was a distinct advantage, being a bachelor was not...and unfortunately, our little ( a few friends joining together) sketch where I requested a friend to act as my wife for a day ( 2 hours precisely) did not work out either. After a week of occupation, the landlord, a punjabi gentleman, asked the where abouts of my "wife" and all I could do was to stutter and stammer. The cat of was out of the bag and so was I, out of the flat !!
