Whats in your music collection?

Hello,
I am conducting research about peoples collection of music and how it reflects a connected, multi-culture society. I was just curious what kind of music you have in your collection and why you are attracted to them? Feel free to post comments about my topic, as I would be interested in any questions or comments.

Well.... I have just begun the process of collecting.

My immediate concern is that as a society we do not believe in archiving for posterity's sake.
On a 0 to 100 scale we dont even score 5 marks in preserving this tradition for someone who is going to be born two hundred years from now.
That and only that has driven me to do all what I have tried.

Two images stand out in my 28 years in Chennai.

A lady from an affluent family (which has the tradition of a Senior Musician singing for every marriage in their Home, for decades) proudly saying how she artistically converted old LPs into gift material by heating and bending them to presentable shapes(for the gifts that one gives in bulk during marriages)

My close friend Prof Ranganthan Passing away and his widow (not knowing what to do with his library of books and tapes) keeping it ready for the roadside vendor who had made his offer of 5 Rs for each book and Rs 2 for each tape) and giving me 30 minutes notice.

To pool in Rs 20000 and pick up the very same books/tapes which I used to take on loan from Prof Ranganathan, very very carefully. And he was such a rare Mali Collector.

Visit the palace of a Royal Home near Thirupathi -Venkatagiri-
There within the deep portals , are arranged wonderful tapes of weekly concerts held as early as 1945. Held every week without fail.

One of the -erstwhile- Two Princes who lives in kodambakkam refused to part with even a single tape for me but would speak for hours on how Vasudevachar was the only Musician who could fill a big hall with his booming voice without a mike .And claims that he has a session where he has sung a Nayaki for over 65 minutes.
On asking him for the tapes for archiving , he replied blandly,
Where is Cm now ? It is dead .
Wonder if we could nationalise these treasures with an Ordinance !!
So getting back to your first question, I think you should modify it as
Why do people Hoard Music ?

And these days they cost way, way more than that.

Coolkarni: That is indeed a somber scene you paint. Despite the advances in technology, the initiative to archive our tradition has not caught up in fervor. Although they are some individuals and organizations out there making an effort, in general , the whole scene is rather goomy.

Doesn't Sampradaya on Musiri Subrahmanya Iyer Road hold a rare collection of archived music?

Hello, and thanks for your replys.
I will agree with you that music is a living element that should be preserved through collections and archives. It is of cultural value to societies, cultures, and individuals and this must be made important in order for preservation to take place within communities. People have to understand that this is important for their children and their children's children.
I wouldn't say that my collection of music is out of a need to hoard it. In fact, most of my music colelction has been freely downloaded from the internet. Since music is a living entity, it should be preserved through archives, and passed around freely for all to use and listen to.
Since growing up in the United States, I have been introduced to many kinds of music and cultures. This reflects the music in which I listen to. I have also studied the classical piano, and so my love for western classical music will always remain with me as well.
I am concerned with people's musical and cultural background in relation to how this fact reflects what we are currently listening to.

I cannot find it on their IPTV, what a shame
in Rio they work hard all year long in their samba schools
just for that Carnival, which they took from Venice, Italy.

One need not to watch these utube vids or argue with the posters, the stress here is the collection of western asian dance style, hopefully followed by eastern asian dance styles from another poster.

I came to know that this 108 collection was taken in part from this thread, which is being expanded constantly.
