Just bought a Cute taperecorder - Phiilips AZ 1856

Put in a casette.
Plug in a USB Pen Drive.
Play the tape and press USB Record.
And Lo you can have the audio Track as an Mp3 file in the Pen Drive.
But you have to play the tape in real time.

You can do the same with Audio CD too-It rips into Mp3 tracks.

At Rs 4800 , it is a great buy for guys with lots of tapes to convert and dont want to take the PC software route.
Nice to see Thermocole packing has given way to Paper Mash.
The Booklet is horrible , though.I had to spend over 2 hours to find out how to exactly do it.Willing to teach others.

microphone- No It does not have one.
That would have been a fine addition.
Forgot to write about another valuable feature.
Designed to record from a radio -Tuner, too.shall be posting a sample track from such a conversion sometime later today.

As long as it has speakers, I think they can act as microphones. I guess, the microphone functionality should be implicit.

In theory, yes, but remember the law of GIGO!

Glad to hear about your new toy, Cool.

And, if it goes wrong, I can tell you where the Philips Service Centre in Adyar is: they've been repairing my TV for about 6 weeks!

Generally, though, Philips is a make that I have good faith in

Will an 'ode to a recorder' serve as a non-secular theme? (TFPIC).....:-)

Good one guys... At work.. just taking a break to read these posts. How about this for a pallavi. Adi talam, rendu kalai chavukkam half edam eduppu.

poorvangam.

ta ka dhi mi tham tham tham tham! tham(arudhi)
4 4 4 4 3 3 3 3 !
kool Ji bt a new tape re co der

10 mathirais of karvai. in the utrangam

tha tham tham tham tham tham tham tham
2 4 4 4 3 3 3 3
Phi lips A Z 1 8 5 6

Set it to any raagam, tri kalam will also easily fall in place. hahahah...Or if someone wants a complicated pallavi make the eduppu as 2 aksharams from samam and make all the 4's into 3's in the poorvangam and sing it as chatusra tisram. let the utrangam be the same but make the karvai from 10 to 14 matrais....oh my god, I am either too creative or too jobless...

Koolji...this is next on my purchase list. quite a lot of tapes at home waiting to be converted.

thathwamasi:

You have killed 2 birds with one stone as it were: an ode to the recorder, and as secular a composition as one can hope to find!!!!

As per this user manual http://www.p4c.philips.com/files/a/az18 ... fu_aen.pdf

"Voltage selector – adjust and match to the local voltage 110/220V before plugging in"

"PLEASE NOTE THAT THE VOLTAGE SELECTOR LOCATED AT THE REAR OF THIS SYSTEM IS PRESET AT 220V FROM THE FACTORY. FOR COUNTRIES THAT OPERATE AT 110V-127V PLEASE ADJUST TO 110V-127VBEFORE YOU SWITCH ON THE SYSTEM."

So, it can operate in other parts of the word but it is targetedd at 220V countries ( especially India ).

Phillips has countrywise sub-sites and this product shows up only in a few countries: India/Russia/Australia/../.. but not U.S.A or Canada

Thanks but could you please upload this on mediafire or some other site? Rapidshare does not work in the UAE.

Please visit http://www.livemint.com/homestereos.htm. This article was published recently and answers a lot of queries on tape conversion (without the need of a computer).

I just don't know why but reading the manual after you buy something is really awfully bOring!! Don't some of you feel that way?

I like, if possible, to read the manual before I buy something.

It tells you (usually; not always true for software), honestly and without blah, what the thing does, which the sales person probably didn't know anyway, even if they are the decent sort who don't just tell what you want to hear.

I think early Japanese product manuals gave manuals a bad name; the translations were often nonsense, and the information negligible.

Useless manuals do still exist --- and they are usually thick because they are printed in twenty different languages.

I read the manual first.

can the tape recorder be connected to world space radio so that the concerts can be recorded and later converted to m.p.3 format?

cool. will it be a gift to all the forum members? I know you are not a Tata , Birla or the AMBANIS. Perhaps when I come to CHENNAI next time, I can bring a box load of cassettes and cds for conversion , camping at your house !!! gobilalitha

Couldnt agree more. The recent whitewashing of my home required me exactly to do this.My word, moving 700 tapes from one room to another was such a pain.

The manual is not intended be the most engaging spy thriller ;) You may also be going through buyer's remorse!!

Kidding aside, manuals have gotten better but it can be improved a lot. For consumer products like the one under discussion, the main challenge is to design
the product and its controls such that a manual is not required for the most common usages. Of course, that is easier said than done.

( Nick, the early japanese manuals were terrrible alright and occasionally the errors were entertaining too!! )

This one, from a food processor (mixie) manual, was quite famous, and makes me laugh whenever i recall it:
Not to be used for the other use.
