Today's The Hindu carries the list of this year's awardees. Regretfully not a single DESERVING carnatic musician is in the list, with exception of Sirkazhi Sivachidambaram. Also there are very few Tamils in all the categories combined. As I have mentioned almost every year in the past, I squarely blame the Tamil Nadu State Govenment for not sponsoring deserving candidates from the state for the annual awards, although these political awards carry little weight.

At least it is nice that Chennai folks make noise and complain about lack of participation from state governements. I know of some of the most desrving and senior most artists from Karnataka who have been completely ignored.

Prof. Mysore V. Ramarathnam is a 91 year old artist, who has been consistently ignored.
R K Srikatan is another 87 year old artist who is yet to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Karnataka artists are ignored not only by central govt.. but also by Tamil Nadu and other states in general. Karnataka never fails to host artists from otther states (they do more for Chennai than their or own or other states). Even recently Karnataka state awarded T. Chowdiah award to Sri Vellore Ramabhadran.. a very deserving vidwan, but I don't see Tamilnadu govt or one of the music academy.. inviting senior and deserving vidwans from Karnataka. It is rather sad, to see this specifically is carnatic music, one of the finerst of fine fine arts. Carnatic music is not just "art for art sake", it is "art for god's sake". Some of these senior vidwans will never go and knock on somebody's door looking for recognition and awards. All of the award selection committee's should consider this in their selection process. I can guarantee that 99% of folks in award committees know all of these veteran and deserving vidwans, who have served the field of music with dedication and distinction for atlease 60 - 70 yrs, as artists, teachers, authors, composers and administrators.
Hope the future general of veteran vidwans, which our current generation (names like T M Krishna, Sanjay, Sudha, R K Sriramkumar, Lalgudi's, Ravikiran, ..... and a lot more) are watching these threads and learn from it, and try to be magnanimous in their approach. I am sure many of current veteran vidwans will leave this world, and they will be richly remembered by rasikas who really know what good music is supposed to be. I wish the current generation of artists the best of luck in this challenging endeavor.

Shocking to learn that these vidwans have not yet been recognized. I wish the TN government steps in to recommend them...
