I wonder who writes such trite stuff:
<A concert by S. Sowmya, a vocalist hailed as a true representative of M.S. Subbalakshami >

Ravi:

I agree it is a bit outrageous to put anyone's name in comparison to MSS, 'representative' or otherwise.

Having said that, if you have to mention any female artist name at all as a potential to keep the 'classicism' tradition of MSS, then Soumya is a better candidate among the current generation female artists than others. IMHO.

VK,
I disagree: for me and for many, many others, the essence of MSS was not in 'classicism' or in her 'musical' ability, but lay her gift to make every note a prayer, an offering to the almighty. She was able to take even the most reluctant among us on a special 'thIrTHa yAthrA' with her. While Sowmya is a superb singer in her own right with few equals, none of the current singers have transcended to the 'MSS plane' and I am not sure that their journey will ever take them there, IMHO!

Ravi: Agreed 100%, if you put it that way. I think that is especially true in the last 3 decades or so of MSS's singing career.

Ravi,
you are absolutely correct in your praise of the Great MSS Amma.
Once in a millenium we get a singer like her who is able to transport us on wings of divinity to the abodes of Gods with her soulful rendition whose very core is nothing but "Bhakthi".MSS Amma is immortal through her divine music which will be heard by music lovers even after another 1000 years and be transported to the realm of Gods.Can there be any comparison to such immortal songs like:
Kurai onrumillai Kanna;
Kaaatriniley varum geetham;
Vadavaraiyai mathaaki vaasugiyai naanaanki;
Vandadum solai thanile;
Kanbadeppodhen aiyyaney;
Her Raga Chakra Maliga with all the 72 mela ragas ( A composition of Maha Vaidhyanatha Sivan)
And her Annamacharya krithis
And her immortal Meera Bhajans, which made even the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi cry with emotion.
And probably we may need another seperate thread altogether to discuss her philanthropy and charity, which is unparalleled in the musical world.It is so hard to believe that in today's material world, She was such a Great Soul who gave away everything she earned in her musical career to charity and when she died she had no material wealth left behind.
But, then the priceless treasure of he immortal music will enthrall generation of music lovers in future also and turn them to God and Religion, such is the emotional and spiritual impact of her music!.

Coolkarni,
Please give me the link to the baul music you refer to, and how is it related to the music of the Great MSS Amma, which Ravi was discussing?

Yes, I would like to read/learn more about these aspects of MSS. First, to just learn and second even if I can't emulate such acts right now, atleast it will give a glimpse into a person who had done that, what it takes to get to such a maturity and all in all a role model to follow in later years...

I remember my dad telling me that when she gave a concert ages ago in USSR ( I personally dont remember it) after the concert was finished a russian woman with tears rolling down her cheeks came to Smt M.S and said " I dont understand what you sang, but It is very touching" Apparently Smt M.S explained to that woman what she sang and what it meant. Her humility is matchless

Sivaraman,
I agree: singers and Sangitha Kalanidhis will come and go, but generations to come will scarce believe that one such as she walked the earth in flesh and blood! (to paraphrase a statement from Attenborough's Gandhi)

VK,
MSS is the creation of God and Sri Sadasivam. If I worship MSS, my respect and admiration for Sri Sadasivam are boundless. In one of the earlier threads, I had put together (from various published sources) what I felt were Sri Sadasivam's contributions to the making of the legend that was MSS. To summarize: when other musicians in TN were trying to make an impact in and around TN, Sri Sadasivam's mind (probably aided by his stint as a publicity man for magazines) figured out that Smt. MSS deserved to become nationally known. To that end, when he remade Meera (remade, not dubbed) in Hindi, he had Sarojini Naidu watch the previews: the MS magic did the rest and in a much publicized intro to the movie, she willingly gave up her title as 'the Nightingale of India' to Smt MSS. The premier of the Hindi Meera was attended by Panditji, Indira Gandhi, Rajendar Babu and many other important people in the freedom movement. Smt. MSS charmed everyone of them. Panditji became a lifelong fan, so much so, that many years later, when he was the PM, he wondered rhetorically after one of her concerts' in New Delhi 'what am I, a mere PM in front of the Empress of Music?' or words to that effect. Sri Sadasivam's involvement with the freedom struggle offered yet another opportunity for Smt. MSS to offer her gift in the service of the nation: the Sadasivams were introduced to the Mahatma, and the rest, as they say is history! The Mahatma very publicly said that he would rather have Smt MSS recite his favorite Bhajans than hear anyone else sing it! The first of numerous series of free concerts that Smt. MSS gave was when Sri Sadasivam told the Mahatma that they'd collect money for the Kasturba Memorial Trust after her death. The Mahatma thanked Smt. MSS in a hand written note that he signed in Tamizh! In the 60s, when the TTD wanted someone to recite the Venkatesha suprabhatam, they chose Smt. MSS...and now, her suprabhatam is the most widely heard composition around the world. Once she conquered India, Sri Sadsivam set his sights across the ocean...using his contact in the UN (Sri Narasimhan) the concert at the UN was born along with the Carnegie Hall concert, and Smt MSS conquered the US, while enslaving people in the UK along the way (reminds me of the refrain in Padma Subramniam's Meenakshi Kalyanam in the scene depicting the conquests of the Pandiyan queen - 'mInavaL ezhundAL, ezhundu dikvijayam seidu vandAL'). While Smt MSS offered her gift back to the almighty with every note, Sri Sadasivam managed her career with superb and unerring vision: the philanthropy was his idea that she approved of whole heartedly. All of the 'business' of her career was managed by him. Theirs was truly a happy marriage where she gave the best years of her life to the man who made them the best. While her absolute surrender to Sri Sadasivam was very well known, it is equally true (says Gowri Ramnarayan's husband) that Sadasivam's world was, and revolved around, his wife. She was truly his Galatea.

Baul Music. My post was not intended to relate it to MS

It is just that I had not been able to satisfy Rshankar's earlier demand for more info on Baul music and I was now tryng to alert him.

Other than that I am aware of his deep respect for MS , His love for all issues related to Dance so occasionally I do use variouis techniques to catch his eye.

This particular post referred to Last Fridays Supplement of Hindu which carried an article on Parvathi Baul , A Baul singer(Baul Music - a kind of devotional music with its roots in Bengal.A practising Baul has to follow a very strict regimen and can learn it only from another Baul Teacher)
I attended the Sufi Music Festival in Chennai where she performed and it was quite breath taking.

a series called Ruhaniyath , it is featured quite often in Bombay.Please do not miss it next time around.
