Narayana murthy's speech at the MMA inauguration is on their website.

Not a bad speech, for a person that knows little about CM (self-confessed). I did not know that story about Columbia records and DK Pattammal.

As also confessed, someone had helped him write the speech. His pronunciation of Suprabhathaam, Aariyakkudi Ramaanuja Aaaainger being as it was, I wouldn't give him much credit on that front.

As for the speech itself, it reminded me of a CPM street corner meeting I was witness to in Calcutta. A Sivaji Ganesan monologue would not be too far off the mark as an analogy either. But if that is good enough for the analysts knocking at his door with hatchets every quarter, I suppose it is good enough for rasikas...

He was humble enough to prostrate in front of Raghu though and that was touching....I also loved his enthusaistic, if somewhat awkward, percussion support for even the most trifling mentions in Murali's speech

Vijay, thanks for the additional info on the speech (the kind that one wouldn't know unless one were present when it was delivered)... He sounds sincere enough though.

RK Suryanarayana and Lalgudi... hmm, not bad taste for a novice. Unless of course he was told to say those things.

I am reminded of this time when Karunanidhi spoke at one of the MMA inaugural events some years ago. I was quite stunned by his knowledge of classical music, when most of us in the audience had assumed that he probably disliked this art form entirely. I now wonder if that speech was also written by someone else.

Abdul Kalam's speech in 2002, now that's in a different league altogether.

Does carnatic music have to be more "popular" than it already is? Also, if Mr Murthy's solution is that technology is going to help facilitate the popularity of carnatic music, he dint really do a good job in elucidating how it can be done. Technology is and has already been adapted very efficiently within the carnatic space (except for the fact that we still donno how to adjust the sound inside of the auditorium). Now, if Mr. Narayanamurthy can really help in such an endeavour, so that noise pollution levels are more effectively controlled, he might even deserve to be invited to deliver the inaugral address at the MMA...oh wait, that just happened, never mind :)
