Nice idea.
For future mridangam competitions, you should have one of the judges put thalam, or have the kid's parent put talam, because his transitions to thisram don't come to talam, and aside from the competition aspect, it's ultimately better for him to have something to look at while playing ...i think there is someone putting it at the end, but you should make sure there's always a talam-putter, for lack of a better term
Good performance for a young age

mri_fan .... for the sake of non-tamils, should we not use the term, "keep the rhythm", "show the thalam" or "maintain the thalam" instead of "putting thalam" ? When my hindi speaking friend, deeply interested in carnatic music, ( he is just starting) read this submission, came around to me seeking clarification about this term "put thalam". While, he is happy to have received the explanation, I just wondered whether we should stop using this expression....just a thought ! Cheers

ah! i've never thought of the possiblity of causing confusing with putting the talam...i always thought it of an "action verb" to put talam, but i can understand how it might cause some confusion...
lets come up with a list of all the ways to say it and see which one we think is the best, and ill promise to use that phrase exclusively in the future!
keep the rhythm/beat/talam
maintain the rhythm/beat/talam
show the rhythm/beat/talam
sustain the rhythm/beat/talam
exhibit the rhythm/beat/talam
i vote for maintain!
