I apologise if this question has been answered in another thread, but I was unable to find much on the subject.

I'm attending the season for the first time this year, and was wondering how I should go about buying the tickets. Would tickets be readily available right before the concert, or would I need to buy them well in advance? I would really appreciate some advice on this subject. Generally, I plan on eschewing primetime Academy concerts since I'm guessing they'll be crowded and I'm no match for the crowds! But what about the non-Academy concerts?

Thank you very much in advance.

for academy kutcheris of top vidwans ,tickets are not refused, but the unfortumate listeners are packed like sardines, you have to search to get even standing place, the stage is packed by rasikas, behind the artistsand wherever inches of space is available . but the brave rasikas face all the ordeals. but in sabhas other than academy. tickets can be had easily. but if you stay in mylapore or nearby areas , all sabhas can be reached easily , you can go just half anhour before the orogramme starts, and get tickets have a nice time gobilalitha

Just got my post blanked out....anyway, except for some artistes like Aruna, Jedsudass, Sudha, Nityasree and Bombay Jayasri, you should get tickets for most concerts at the venue...try not to miss Academy concerts - despite the crowds, artistes are at their best and the atmosphere is realy charged...stage tickets are great valaue if you can sit cross legged...

Have a good time at Season 07!

Vijay, the week I'm in Chennai, only TMK and Sanjay are performing at the Academy (of those I'd like to listen to-- the ones you mentioned I really don't care about!); would they be really crowded as well? I have about as much antipathy to crowds as some people here have for autos...

Meena,
Very interesting. Goes to show that though the music scene has changed, human nature remains the same. There are generous hearted musicians and devoted fans who favor a free concert even today, not forgetting sabha secretaries who come in many varieties!

Wow, that is interesting. I was also intrigued by the 15 minute break allowing the artiste to do sandhyavandhanam!

Very illuminating! Interesting that the tambUrA player did not have to pay his obeisance to sandhyA dEvI!

tabla specialist Shanta prasad used to avail a break of 15 minutes , even when accompanying RAVI SHANKAR, at about 6.45 in the evening FOR SANDHYA VANDHANAM. tthey are accustomed to performances beginning at about 9pm and not the evening programmes beginning at 5.30 or 6 pm . SP FROM VARANASI, WILL NEVER MISS HIS TIME BASED RITUALS . GOBILALITHA KGSsecretary (late) Yagnyaraman was full of appreciation for SP gobilalitha

Purchasing tickets for the concerts is something we have learned by trial and error during the past several seasons. Still, it is possible to make a boo boo and end up with terrible seats for a high price. Strategic timing is essential. In the Academy where you cannot buy tickets with specified seats, you end up waiting in that really crowded lobby or that suffocating corridor. That is, if you were lucky enough to make it to the ticket counter in the morning before they were sold out. This happens with the concerts of several star performers.
So, who were the star performers? I came across this survey by IRC-WIde Vision Market Intelligence and Future Studies conducted during the music season. Interesting. Misspellings and misnomers too!
I do not recall the link now, and I hope someone would help find it, dunce-capped one that I am, in the techno class...

Not sure whether the results make any sense...judging from the crowd response at least...I would have thought Aruna Sayeeram would easily top the rankings in the distaff category. And where is Nithyasree?

You never know, Vijay. Atleast, during the season, even those stars who do not attract crowds as would Aruna or Kunnakkudi, seem to make the sabhas scatter plastic chairs all over the aisles. My guess is, it is like some not so regular temple goers who know fully well that they would get stampeded, but still want to take the scene in on SivarAtri or vaikuNTa EkAdaSi! The season brings out the music lovers in Chennaites and however sporadic their kacEri attendance, they like the excitement of it all during the season--conveniently, it is holiday time too for them...
