Hi all,
I am a singer and lover of carnatic music. But not a pro. I love to sing and want to learn it properly and with technical details. I do know to guess few ragas and sing them well, but lack theoritical knowledge. I do not know to talk about music , songs and ragas. My basic knowledge was through hearsay which i developed by listening to more music and learning from whoever i could come across.
Would like to know how i could gain the knowledge of grammar of ragas . Can anyone suggest a good book?
Also , i stay in Mumbai. Would like to know if i can find a guru in chembur or ghatkopar.
regards

'Ragas in Carnatic Music' by Dr S. Bhagyelakshmi is a useful resource.
The Fine Arts society in Chembur has vocal music teachers. See http://www.fineartschembur.com/ There are sure to be many other teachers in that area too.

Dear sister-member, vaijayanthi, I have written a book, ‘Sangita Svararaga Sudha (English/Telugu)’, containing different patterns of Svarakalpana in 6 Talas in the form of Jatis and Svaras of a number of easy Muktayis along with Alapana of 36 Ragas notated and sung in the album of 9 cassettes costing Rs.600/- per each copy. I have kept some of its copies with one of my friends, Mrs. Padmavathy, a music-teacher, resides in Chembur and her residential telephone number is 022-25287383. If you want you can get a copy of it from her.
I have made many experiments upon my students and found some easy methods to make the aspirants able to sing Svarakalpana and Ragalapana on their own and accordingly I have brought out all these methods in this book. If you are interested in singing Svarakalpana or Ragalapana on your own you must practice the Laya-exercises furnished in this book and, in respect of ragalapana, you must become able to very carefully follow the notation of each Raga and sing it. After getting that book if you need any help you can contact me through my telephone number 040-27054232 or [email protected] or Yahoo messenger or Skype ID ‘msakella2002’. With best wishes, amsharma.

Dear sister-member, vaijayanthi, Ragalapana is the pure juice of the fruit and unless the fruit is crushed one cannot get the juice out. If your rhythmical instinct is at the required level and if you, at first, practice regularly and vigorously all the different Laya-exercises under 'karnataka violin exercises' furnished in the ‘Youtube-video-links’ provided in my postings in the ‘Teaching/ Learning Karnataka Violin’ under the main thread ‘Sangita Kalalaya’ of this forum you can definitely get reasonable control over Laya to sing Svarakalpana in different Talas furnished in my book. Later, going through the details of Kampitas and Gamakas and their application and utilization furnished in the 2nd part, Ragasudha of my book and getting reasonable acquaintance with them you can easily proceed with Ragalapana also.
Unless you do all these things it is not that easy to sing Svarakalpana and Ragalapana on your own. With best wishes, amsharma.

Dear sister-member, vaijayanthi, For many days I was not in town and just today only I accidentally saw your posting in ‘grammer of Ragas’. I awfully feel sorry for the inordinate delay in replying. I hope the links of Youtube are always active. However, you can directly go to the web-site, ‘Youtube.- broadcast yourself’ or ‘Youtube.com/msakella’ to find the 40 video-links. I think it is better to have the BSNL-broadband to get all of them. If you have any doubt you can contact me through my Yahoo Messenger ID ‘msakella2002’ around 7 am or 8 pm on any day. amsharma.
