I am ceratinly impressed with the energy of these artists. I wonder how they even find time to sleep.

Thanks rshankar...

This caught my attention
There were stumbling blocks. ``I wanted to give up when we reached Todi,'' says Shriramkumar. Krishna laughs and sings ``Kamalamba'' according to SSP notation. Strange notes waft in, suggesting old film songs and middle-eastern strains.
I wonder what causes this. This almost seems to indicate that the SSP thodi was lighter. May be. Something I will watch out for when I get to hear the recordings.

Me TOO! I was so intrigued by that. And I like the lesson that Krishna wants us to learn from that.

Really interesting bit about tODi. I never paid too much attention to gamaka of tODI in SSP as tODI is too well known to need a reference. Now Sriramkumar and Krishna`s comment makes me think of caturdaNDIprakASike and mudduvekaTamakhi. venkaTamakhi does not even mention the rAga in the CDP. Not even the dismissive reference that he gives to kalyANi. The more interesting part is in mudduvenkaTamakhi`s rAgalakShana! He calls tODi a rakti rAga and surprise! dESI rAga. That ha caused consternation to nearly every sholar and musicologist. Now the mention of middle eastern strains and film tunes makes it sound less incredulous although still unconvincing. By the time of mudduvenkaTamakhi, janatODI had acquired the mELa status and is described as sampUrna.
But yes the rAga does not find mention in the pUrvaprasidha mELas. But R.R.Keshavamurthy argues that this rAga is teh RShabha mUrchane of the ShaDja grAa and hence canot be an import.

Once a HM friend explained to me that:
dil thoDthA hai isliyE thODi (it breaks your heart hence it is thODi)
He claimed it was hence of Persian origin!
Made sense to me!

Of course 'tud' is sanskrit dhatu meaning break but then it should have been tOdi rather than tODi. In fact the 'D' used is the arabic equivalent of 'zha' in Tamil (of vedic origin)

Yep. tODi in hindUstAni is the same as our SubhapantuvarALi. dil kO zarUr tODtA hai. There is not much doubt about that one being a dESi rAga.
