I was initially skeptical about Shruthi but the programming really has me floored. It is clearly driven by people who care a lot about the art. Interviews with vidwans and discussions on finer points of ragas are just some examples. The carnatic channel is far more informative, for example, than its Hindusthani counterpart Gandharv which is a more standard "AIR style" presentation...
My only crib is that they have a kitschy "instrumental hour" at 11PM which is just when I settle down to listen to music!

here is the link

There is a 24 hour free trial going on right now. I think, they are charging Rs.400 / USD 9.99 for one month subscription. If interested, try out

I have been trialling the internet service, listening to the Sruthi channel. Had a few problems with my browser freezing up trying to access the channels but it worked after several attempts.
I heard a program hosted by G Ravikiran featuring krithis in allied ragas (nilambari, kedaram, kurinji and navroj). It featured renditions from various aristes with some commentary about the ragas by G Ravikiran. This was quite informative The other programs I hear didn't have a theme.
Of what I heard, only krithis were being played without any raga or swara elaboration. This was quite disappointing. I beleive there is a weekly concert program which features an entire concert.
Being an online service, I was restricted to hearing the music on the computer (unless you run cables to your music system or use an FM transmitter).
For now I would not pay $US10 for the internet service. Unfortunately the satellite radio service is not available for Australia.

I was also unable to listen to any stations due, it appeared, to network traffic. However, I think this idea has a lot of potential and CM is being given a very important place, so I think we just need to give it some time to work out the kinks. Perhaps Sruthi Worldspace can entice those of us who could not satisfactorily access the music with another free trial...

The system is not being consistent. I logged on for the first time yesterday at noon. This monring, some 18 hours later, it is asking me to put in a new password. When I tried that, it says, the old password is wrong. It was the password given by the system and now it claims it is wrong. There seems to be no help available on line. I give up now and wait for this to settle down.
But what little I heard, it was good and it is worth the trouble.
Cheers

Please visit http://www.worldspace.in/shruti/schedule for Shruti's ten day radio programme guide. This page provides a brief descriptor to each program, and lets you know of thematic and/or commemorative specials.mohan wrote:The other programs I hear didn't have a theme. I listen to radio at various times when I am free - I know there is a schedule but it is quite hard for me to specifically tune into particular shows. It is even harder given the various time zones we all live in.mahaspeaking wrote:Please visit http://www.worldspace.in/shruti/schedule for Shruti's ten day radio programme guide. I tried this yesterday and have listened so far to about 2 hours. *Excellent* audio quality - and only 2 pauses in streaming so far (quickly recoverable).
If you have a high speed connection, I think this works quite well.
$10 per month is not cheap - but it is for all 5 channels. Would have been better if they had separate pricing for separate channels.
I will still subscribe to it I think. $10 is an average of two lunches per month (i do eat out a lot). I think I can easily compromise that for being able to listen to carnatic music anytime I want that month - I mean if I look at it that way, its not even an argument
!
Note: it works only IE. Not on firefox, Safari
PS: As I type this, I am listening to a program on Abheri and its controversy hosted by Ravi Kiran (I am not sure if it is Chitraveena Ravikiran - it I think is G. Ravikiran our forum member?)

I had listened to almost 1.5 hours today (a lot of that Abheri program). Then had to go for lunch (see? I am not that addicted to cm
). I came back and things just didnt work. My login had expired and I never could listen again. My 24 hour trial period has now expired. Well I guess it is Beta after all - and for that my experience was not bad at all.
Now I have to decide whether I should fork out $10 a month. I would have liked a longer trial period only given this reliability glitch. I am leaning towards going for it - if we rasikas are not ready to endure some growing pains to support such efforts, who will?
