This raga appears to be a janya of Maya Malava Gowla.
DKJ has popularised " gunijanAdhinutha guruguhOdaye, gurjari rAga priye vara shive" of MD with an excellent Chitta Swara ( commercial recording).

DRS/Lakshman/Rasikas , is this the only composition in this raga ??

There is also tyAgarAja's varAlandu kommani. S.Ramanthan used to sing this so well.

gurjari, historically competed with mALavagouLa for the mELa spot; finally mALavagouLa won the race ;)

It is a shame that the rAga has come down from being a potential mELa to an obscure and hardly heard one.

The rendition by SR is very nice - but there seem to be many instances of phrases like PDPM...I have been taught that gUrjhari should not take PDPM and only PDNPM, conforming to its ArO: S R1 G3 M1 P D1 N3 and ava: S D1 N3 P M1 G3 R1 (iirc S N3 P is also permissible in some cases). Are there alternate versions?

DRS- Since annamchArya & puranadara dAsa were contemporaries, if this raga was so famous during their time, there must be lot of parandara dAsa's compositions also in Gurjari. DRS-Do you have a list ?

The SSP gives a krama sampUrNa ArOhaNa and avarOhaNa for gUrjari. So PDPM looks absolutely fine. The MD kRti guNijanAdi also has these swara sandarbhas. I have some observations to make about the rAga. Will do later.

Manju- I do not have a list as such but yes IIRC gUrjari name does figure in at least one of PD compositions. I will try and look up other songs of his that have been traditionally assigned gUrjari rAga.

DRS,

doesn't this rAga come from the land of gurjars (aka gujjars) and isn't that land kashmIr?

Thanks DRS - I think the dIkShitar school's handling of gUrjari is understood to be different from tyAgarAja's...I was wondering whether there are alternate interpretations of tyAgarAjA's gUrjari.

The name gurjari shows up at least in 3 compositions of Purandara dAsa that list different rAgas (most likely in vogue in his time) - tutturu tUrendu battisa rAgagaLannu, anganeyarellaru neredu and naLinajANDa taleya toogi.

The text for these compositions in post #344 in the following page

gUrjari appears in purandaradAsa's list of battIsa rAgagaLu, no composition is listed under the rAga (In araLumallige pArthasArathi's book). In contrast, there are quite a few compositions in pUrvi.

I just spoke with SRJ Mama and he informed me that there may be a way to justify PDPM in tyAgarAjA's gUrjari using the given ArO/ava structure, but that this phrase may be used rarely as a matter of artistic license. He also confirmed that dIkShitar's handling of gUrjari is different from tyAgarAjA's (which is more distinct from mAyAmALavagauLa) and also more complex, in that the rAga structure cannot be as easily discerned from guNijanAdi as it is in varAlandu kommani.

In the commercial recording of "guNijanAdinutha", DKJ's outstanding chiTTaswara has all sorts of swara combinations - many instances of "D1 P M1 G3" and "S N3 D1 P", non-conforming to the avarOhaNam. Btw is this the ArOhaNa-avarOhaNa given in SSP?
Anyways, I attribute the chiTTaswaram's grandeur to the innumerable dhATTu pRayOgams.

Regards,
Kumar.

Ashwin- from the scale you have given earlier (SRGMPDNS*| S*DNPMGRS||), it is not possible to justify PDP prayOga unless you grant it the status of viSESha prayOga.

Could you request SrI SRJ to kindly enlighten us about the differences between gUrjari and MMgauLa?

SSP gives SRGMPDNS*-SNDPMGRS as ArOhaNa and AvarOhaNa, saying that the raaga is rishabha graha and that madhyaman and daivatham are to be used in alpa prayogams.

The following link has a Lecture Demonstration by DKJ on Dikshitar.
Interestingly, he has discussed the complexity of Gurjari in the song- gunijanAdi nutha.

I hope rasikas will enjoy this treat by DKJ.

No, Gurjari Todi (of Hindustani) IIRC, is panchama varjya in shubha pantuvarALi (which is tODi in hindUstAni)

Sekharachandrika in CM is the equivalent of the hindustani Gurjari Todi.

And with some gentle prodding , nandagopal may decide to sing his compositions in such HM ragas for us here.
The last time he went on a spree at my home , it was truly elevating.
