Interesting but incisive observation!......Tabla is a great instrument & the sruti suddham as well as typically cleaner notes played by north indian tabla players is bound to appeal to any one for music after all consists of musical notes& chords at a tecnical level don't you think?....i think the beauty of carnatic music is like hinduism itself- a big factor in the compositions- has an appeal at various levels & the drumming part is quite intellectual but the greats like palghat mani iyer, palani subramania pillai & murugabhoopathy made it unbelievably musical too!

Couldn't have been said any better. There many senior Vidwans some of them in their 90's who have been completely ignored by Madras Music Academy. The only thing unfortunate about this is that, these great maestro's do not have lobby organization working their cause in Chennai. Plus to make matters worse, if these artists are not a part of "Chennai" some how, and if they happen to live in Andra, Kerala or Karnataka or some where in the north, then they tend to be ignored completely. I know of very senior vidwans, authors, musicologists and composers all embodied in to one person/s, who have not been consisdered by Madras Academy..jayaram wrote:Let them award a great vidwan like Shri Manakkal Rangarajan with the Sangeetha kalanidhi, then I will accept they have come of age. My biggest observation is " legends such as Ariyakudi, GNB, Madhura Mani, Maharajapuram Viswanatha Iyer, ..... have been conferred Sangeetha Kalanidhi.... and so are much junior artists with in the recent times as well as since 80's and 90's, who may be good, but do not come any where near the calibre of these legends..." So is there any meaning to conferring awards year after year??? To me this is all game that is not needed for promoting great art like Carnatic Music..
Without a doubt, Vidwan Palakkad Raghu sir richly deserves this award, and I sincerely hope that, he is accepting it, without any inner feelings. I wish and pray god to reward him with many more years, of health, hapiness and ability to enthrall audience world wide with his vidwat.

To quote Apasruthi "Sri Raghu can think and play at the same time" (I have not figured out how to quote just a sentence). I think as far as Raghu mama is concerned just comparing him to Cricket stars is a much bigger accolade. Raghu mama is a cricket buff to the very last bowl. We have had some wonderful times in the early 80's watching cricket. Once he had come to Bombay for a concert at Anushakti Nagar. It was early June. We had our first showers that afternoon. A 1:00 PM concert of Shri Nedunuri Krishnamurthy, accompanied by Dwaram Durga Prasad Rao and Raghu mama. It was the 5th and final day of the test match between India and another country. (I forget, almost 24 years ago). When the concert was done Raghu mama left like a flash of lightening to see the match with me. One of our very lucky days because at the Anushakti circle, our car skidded and facing the wrong side off the street. Mama did not bat an eyelid, was not flustered, just matter of fact stated "Turn around, we will miss the game" Those were the good old days. Congrats mama. If you read this post you probably know who I am.

Thanks mri_fan, arasi, mahesh33 and appu for your views and appreciations to my analogy to the cricket for Shri Raghu. The analogy was not just co-incidental, but deliberate, knowing very well, Shri Raghu's penchant for cricket.
I also agree with vkv43034's view on GNB-LGJ-PR combo as one of the best. For those who have not been exposed to this, please hear out Shri Raghu playing for SSI, though it is not very common fare. Un-believably different to the normal patterns. I was amazed at the anticipatory sangathi's playing by PR during the neraval and swaram singing, he was completely tuned to SSI baani..
Other than KVN, Neduneri, I can also quote, Shir Raghu's fantastic accompaniment for Shri DKJ, MDR and Hyderabad brothers, and in the period 1997-2002 for Sanjay also... as truly an evolving pattern of playing..

PS : By the way I presume, Shri Raghu's favourite cricketer is Sanath Jayasuriya. He used to comment on him as " Avan kaiyya paaru, sariyaana thavilkaaran maathiri.." (See his forearms, much alike a seasoned Thavil player..)

Perhaps Semmangudi-Lalgudi- Raghu combination was a great delight for the music lovers in 1950's and 1960's. Once I listened to a recording in which raghu played brilliantly to semmagudi's rendition of raagas like Vasantha [hariharaputram], Mukhari[ksheenamai] and "Ramachandrana samrakshithoham"[ raga Manji?]...etc., Raghu's mridangam was sounding like the "chande"..used in folk performances....
He is a great laya artist with whom every vocalist used to perform very cautiously!

while talking about raghu Sir......who is the senior between Sivaraman Sir and Raghu Sir ?
one might have asked this kind of a question when these legends were young and new to the concert platform....
both of them have created their own stle of playing and their own identity....
think what will happen if anyone asks whether palghat shri mani iyer was more with shri vaitha anna's way of performing.... when compared to murthy mama....
sishyas not only play what their gurus play in concerts.. they also play what the gurus play in their home, class, while checking the mrudangam for concerts and what the gurus say (upadhEsham) after their concerts too play an important role...
uks sir, raghu sir, murthy sir.... all have their own entity and personality and they perform with their own style...
guru's exist to make the sishya realise and not to do just the copying....
though music can be defined it is also creative..
