awards in our country are more like wreaths. they are given when the awardee becomes too old to be of any consequence!

I have even heard Kalaimamani is available for sale. There have many takers in the recent past. This award has lost its glory long back. There were some great people who refused to accept it for the sheer political color, mistiming and all and sundry nature. Eg: Cho Ramaswamy, Indira Parthasarathy (writer) Karaikkudi Mani

Dear brother-members, chalanata & sathsangeethapriyan, What you wrote in respect of the present day awards is absolutely correct and only by the grace of the Almighty I was able to refuse the Vishishtaseva-award carrying Rs.5,000/- along with a citation offered to me in connection with the Telugu New Years Day, 19th March to be honoured by the present CM. On the next day of that I was congratulated for having refused it to take by some of the elderly musicians and others. Most unfortunately, this is the state of our awards affair of our beloved country. Canâ€™t help than refusing to receive them.amsharma.

Dear Sharmaji, The problem with our system is that,

1. There are certainly a good number of deserving musicians who would not refuse if respectfully offered;

2. The number of frequently and infrequently performing musicians being too big, the award giving people are either too confused, ignorant and non-consulting or prefer to succumb to pressures (mostly with purses!)

3. Government also has a bunch of officials whose only job is to curse the job, employer, and public and where is the time for them to learn about art, artistes, then organize a committee to weigh the talent and contribution?

4. We have a big lot of musicians who with personal funds or sponsored funds can move the coins in right direction.

5. We the public are the other lot who could only regret for a good artiste getting ignored or impotently fume at an undue recognition.

â€œRecently a senior musician who received a Central Govt. Award (though deservingly) told me, â€œwell! if buying is made a system, better get smart enough to buy at the right age! lest you are pitied for ever as a member of unlucky lotâ€

Dear brother-member, sathsangeethapriyan, Accidentally, when I have again gone through our posts, I thought that it would be better if I write another incident of mine in this respect and since I am writing this.
Generally, I make a plan to get the things done and, in 60s, in respect of getting the grades one after the other of All India Radio, I made a plan to implement it in every five-yearâ€™s duratioin. Accordingly, I got my 1st Radio programme in 1963 as B-grade Violinist, in 1968 I got B-High-grade, in 1973 I got A-grade and, later, as the Top-grade, in those days, was given either to the persons having God-fathers or to the aged persons only, I was stagnated there for nearly 30 years, as I was neither. Around 2000, the Top-grade was also made open to the candidates appearing for up-grading audition. Then, having become vexed upon these un-justifiable policies of the authorities and when I had to make a recording for the broadcast of my Violin-music, I wrote a letter to the then Director, All India Radio, Hyderabad, kindly to arrange to send the same recording for up-gradation to the MAB (Music-audition-board, Delhi) and, if they do not feel to up-grade me into Top-grade, to stop sending contracts thereafter and also to remove my name from the list of casual artists. After a lapse of few months, when I was playing another recording for the next broadcast, while playing â€˜Vatapiganapathim Bhaje-Hamsadhvani-Adiâ€™ as the main item, at one place, accidentally, my finger also touched the un-wanted note â€˜Chatusshruti-dhaivataâ€™, though not a full-note, reminding my old age of 54 and then I got assured of myself that, definitely, I am going to be up-graded to the Top-rank and within a lapse of few days it became true and I have received a communication that I was up-graded to the Top-rank. (Of course, after playing only for twice as a TOP-RANK-ARTIST, I have filed a case against the AIR & TV in the Court of Law, for their mis-deed of paying a single payment and making me play to different concerts for the broadcast on two different days which is another episode still running since last four years in the Court of Law) This is the episode behind my Top-rank and I thought it is the time to bring this out through our posts to make our people relishwell. amsharma.

Richly deserved award for Mr. Sanjay Subrahmanyan, a true "STATE'"sman and an ardent promoter and exponent of tamizh arts, culture, literature and music.
