A related question - I have also read that soundaryalahari was probably not the work of Adi Sankara. If any of the rasikas has any information on this viewpoint, please post.
I think there is some question about the authorship of the second half of the verses in the soundaryalahari...maybe one of his students composed them...

Actually as per legend the whole of Soundarya lahiri was given by Lord Shiva to Shankara and Nandikeshvara on seeing the valuable script taken away from Kailas snatched a portion of the cudgeon leaves which was later substituted by Shankra with his verses. The slokas upto first 41 wer originally briought from Kailas as per Kanchiu Mahasavmigal
Regarding Bhajagovindam,it is said to be composed by Shankara in Kashi whe he saw an old man trying to memorise the Panini's grammatical treatise Dukrinj. This is what I have read.
I've heard that many saints were called Shankara during that era, to differentiate the founder of the Adwaitha philosophy was called Adi Shankara. One persons said to me, that many works attributed to Adi Shankara was actually by his followers who were also called Shankara.
And Baboosh, I've heard the same legend about why he composed Bhaja Govindam.
