The Rotary Club of Chennai Kilpauk honoured three distinguished personalities from different fields on April 15th. The function was held at Hotel Residency Tower, Chennai.
The Chief Guest Major General B. Sivasankar conferred the ‘LIFE TIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD’ on Sangitha Kalanidhi Smt.R.Vedavalli.
(The other recipient of this award was Smt.Akkamma Krishnamurthy, President of Andhra Mahila Sabha; ‘For The Sake Of Honour’ award was presented to the renowned Economist Prof. Dr. Raja Jesudoss Chelliah).
Here is the Citation presented to Smt. Vedavalli:

Her conviction and relentless effort in preserving the divinity and pristine purity of this form of music has been a source of inspiration for rasikas and the future generation of musicians, as evidenced by the tremendous response to her performance and lecture demonstrations.
For the commitment to the cause of Carnatic music and for the outstanding contribution to the development of all aspects of this classical art, the Rotary Club of Chennai Kilpauk is honoured to confer the prestigious ‘Life Time Achievement Award’ on Srimathi R. Vedavalli, this the Fifteenth Day of April, 2007.â€

Though I have followed her career as a vidUshi and teacher with admiration, I had not met her in years until I started going to Chennai for the season in the past decade. I would run into her at the Academy once in a while. It was a pleasure and honor to have her there at the Arasi CD release event...
