>The film that will tell the story of love between a girl born in a slum who becomes a popular playback singer and a nadaswaram artiste
It sounds like a nice story line ( lots of interesting possibilities ). We will have to see how that is developed and handled. It would have been even better if the story is about her becoming a CM artist.
BTW, Are there examples/role models of CM artists who come from such backgrounds?

The title is
Esappattukkari's tickets @ Rs 10
The article talks about the movie Esappattukkari which is the 'story of love between a girl born in a slum who becomes a popular playback singer and a nadaswaram artiste.'. So it can be Ezhai (poor) pATTukARi (female vocalist) The writer perhaps did not know to use properly 'zha' the special Tamil letter

CML,
I like that--but 'udai vAngi'--is a shade too modern, don't you think?
How about--maNNu thinRu aDi paTTu, veNNAi thiruDi, uralil kaTTuNDArEDi, ungaL perumAn.
Wish I had remembered the original line.
I have a feeling, it could even be an expression of Saiva vaishNava tug of war, as the ESAl went against the missionary folks--rather harsh, I admit : ESu cristhu engE piRandAr? vaikkal paDappile vAyaip piLandAr--such a derogatory expression on Nativity...
Folks, for those of you who would like the translation,
maNNadichchu=by hauling sand, aDi paTTU=by being caned, vANichchi= oil woman? piTTu=a steamed rice pudding
vangi vAngi=asking for more of it thinRArEDi=he pigged out like that!
Ravi can tell the story beautifully. I forget the details.
cml wrote: having eaten dirt, he got slapped, having stolen butter, he got kicked, your man.
My version added his being tied to a ural (giant outdoor stone pestle-pounding stoneware.
The reference to caste and religious conflicts is well illustrated in the invective about Christ on a bale of hay, opening his mouth wide to wail--what one would consider a beautiful sight and sound when a new born lets out a cry...

CML/Arasi: The story has been described eloquently by Kannadasan, rendered melodiously by Smt. MLV, and divinely danced by Padmini for the movie madurai vIran (in the song ADal kANIrO) - we have discussed this before.

Arasi, my fiancee was with me for the past two years, and you can imagine what she has to go through, the poor woman.. she says attending concerts with me is an experience in itself, as she can just sit and watch my expression as the artiste renders his/her concert. Apparently the "good" and the "bad" of the concert show up right on my facial expressions. (I didn't realise this until she actually recorded a loud "CHI!" when I heard Nityasree sing a horrible thanam in Dharmavathi about a year ago).

I believe that today's artists seem to be competing with each other to perform maximum number of concerts (and thus enter into Guiness Records) to eventually lose effectiveness.
I have just picked up a concert of Nithyasree in cassette form -it contains a thematic concert that she rendered in Coimbatore about 10 years ago (on Nandanar and Gopalakrishna Bharthi songs). If you listen to that then possibly you will understand that her efficiency has got undermined for the simple reason that she has just loaded herself with a tight schedule of concerts and concerts alone.

About that last line...one example that comes to mind is Sri. Vittal Ramamurthy. He couldn't afford classes with Sri Lalgudi, so Lalgudi let him move in and "pay" for his stay by doing some chores around the house. He learned violin whenever he could, and has become one of the leading violinists since then.vasanthakokilam wrote:>The film that will tell the story of love between a girl born in a slum who becomes a popular playback singer and a nadaswaram artiste

VK,
the story may go like this. the slum girl sings folk and confronts the nadhaswaram senior and challenges that folk is superior to CM. nadaswaram senior makes fun of her. she vows to reach great heights with the help of folk and in the meanwhile falls in love with junior nadaswaram. she dances around trees and junior wearing a gown and the song is set to 'elelele' with traces of meg malhar.
in the meanwhile the contest comes and both perform equally. the senior gets a stab wound from a disgruntled sister's husband of the slum girl who wanted to marry her. the senior joins the hand of junior and the girl and dies!
this is my story and am yet to copyright the same!

The village girl was self-trained in folk music. She goes to the city to see a movie in which a sequence of nAdaswaram playing scene appears. The girl automatically starts singing a folk song to match the simmEndramadyamam rAgam that the vidwan was playing. Everybody in the theater is astonished at such a talent. One in the audience (obviously a CM rasika) spots her and talks to her about how she attained such knowledge. The girl bashfully replies that she just got it in her guts. The man takes her to the nAdaswara vidwan (he happens to know him personally) and introduces her to him. The vidwan asks her to sing a couple of items that she knows. She obliges. He was impressed. He asks her to come again another time. She does and the musical exchange goes on at each meeting. Cupid starts hurling his malark kaNaigaL (the flower arrows) at both of them. They fall in love and elope to TirunIrmalai and get married secretly with the original CM rasika and another village person as witnesses. (Intermission). Does everything go well from hereon?--That is the question that appears on the screen.
If somebody is interested in producing part 2 of this story please do. If not I will do it later.

Ah.. a chain story
I want to add something to the initial part of the story a little bit. The girl actually earns her living doing chores at many households in a little town where a few different CM vidwans live. As she sprinkles water early in the morning in front of the steps and put kOlam, she hears the practise sessions of all these vidwans and imbibes them naturally over the years. That is what leads to her belting out Simhendra Madhyamam at the theater. ( One can have some interesting scenes where the CM teacher asks her student to sing a raga and the student struggles..but our girl, while calmly doing household chores hums that raga beautifully to everyone's surprise ).
OK, for the second part, we have to add some tension.
- Our heroin finds that the Nadhaswaram vidwan is already married. OR
- Nadhaswaram loses its popularity and they struggle to earn a living and our heroin steps up and reaches the top pedastal with a 7 P.M. concert at the music academy.
(My little niece hates the middle part of movies where usually things take a turn for the worse. I can imagine the expression in her face when this negative stuff happens to our heroine ).

After returning from TirunIrmalai nAdaswaram and pATTu (the new wife) start a household in a suburb of the city. nAdaswaram lives with pATTu for a week to enjoy the new conjugal bliss. When nAdaswaram goes out of town for concerts he takes pATTu with him. She sits close to him on the stage and hums silently to herself all the songs that nAdaswaram plays. Several weeks pass on. Suddenly nAdaswaram stops coming to the house where pATTu is put up. There was no phone in the house nor pATTu knows how to contact nAdaswaram. Slowly neighbors start talking and pATTu comes to know that nadaswaram is already married, that nadaswaram's first wife went for a confinement and delivery to her parents down south and has returned recently to the city with the new baby.
pATTu is in shock! She wants to go and confront nadaswaram. Before that she goes to our friend CM rasika and accuses him of complicity in duping her. CM rasika pleads ignorance of nadaswaram's previous marriage. Being an honest man, he takes a challenge, takes pATTu to a famous vocalist and gets her basics polished and and lets her learn kritis and all the embellishments. In a few months she is ready to climb the stage. First she gets into a small sabha (with the help of our CM rasika) and then her fame spreads and she gets invitations from several sabhas. (We will have a couple of concert scenes featuring her singing "cakkani raja" in one and "tiruvaDi caraNam" in another). nadaswaram comes to know of this and attends one of her concerts incognito. Once he knows about her fame, he decides to forsake his first wife and asks the pardon of pATTu and requests her to accept him. At that point pATTu gives him a lecture on morality and fidelity and tells him to go back to his first wife and forget her (pATTu). nadaswaram refuses and stays with her for a few days (after all he married her, you see!). pATTu gains more fame and money. nAdaswaram forgets his first wife and his own music, starts drinking and gets into fights with pATTu. A few months pass and pATTu discovers she has cancer....
Somebody please complete the story. I have a writer's block!

Oh, nuts! Jayaram, you trailblazer
We can plagiarize Nandanar a bit.. In the initial village scenes, our heroine very much wants to listen to chamber concert of out of town CM great at one of the CM vidwan's house but she is not allowed in. She stands outside and try to listen. But the road noises make it difficult.. She goes off to her humble house and sings a variation on the 'vazhimaraiththirkkude'. As she sings, that out of town CM great happens to pass by that house ( the concert is done by that time of course ) and happens to listen to her singing a great Nattakurinji..........

Subs - Chakkani Raja in one scene? You don't want Bala flying a 747 into your back, do you now?
How about Nadas teaches her all she knows and then dies in a car crash or something. Our heroine is young but widowed now, so the sabhas don't give her oppurtunities any more and it's the story of her troubles to perform being a widow. In the end the movie finishes of on a high with her receving the Sangitha Kalanidhi! And / or she re-marrying someone who provided support during her troubles...

i think we need some modern touch here... how about...
the slum girl who is working in the nadasvara vidvan's house is communicating with junior vidvan everyday via email / IM under fake id without revealing the identity. finally when the junior vidvan finds out the truth, he is impressed with her both CM and IT skills and the girl helps both the vidvans' publicity by setting up a website...
; then the website gets hacked, consequently the girl gets amnesia. the nadasvara vidvans performs a popular raga (pick any) and girl remembers everything back and alls well.

Here is the denoument:
CM rasika takes pATTu to a famous doctor in Switzerland and that doctor gives her the new experimental cancer drug "tamoxifedelin" and over the course of the next month pATTu goes into complete cure. She decides to stay back in Switzerland and teach music to all who would like to learn. She conducts a school and settles there in a villa on Lac de Neuchatel.
arunk:
I will write a couple of songs such as " tangamE tangam mangaLam ponga engE senRAyO" in a gana rAgam (perhaps mukhAri) which will be played on the nAdaswaram by our dejected vidwan once he learns that pATTu was never to return to India. Also during the village scene in the early part of the movie there will be a dabba song, "ingiTTu vandu angiTTu pOyi engiTTu tanguvEnO?" which will feature our pATTu (by the way her name will be janganmohini in the movie and our nadaswara vidwan will be called mOhan).
So there need be no other lyricist. Two dabba songs, two great CM songs, and several instrumental interludes in different rAgams should suffice.
cmlover:
I have to disappoint you. You have no singing role since there is no place for that in this movie. But you will be the music director.
Title of the movie: enRenRum isaikkuyil

mahakavi will indeed make pATTu sing when she is dejected;
'nallathOr vINai seidE..'
in yaman! Why because the producer insisted on yaman
Again nAdasvaram is quite dark (darker than vijayakAnt
and hence has an inferiority complex (which CML could not correct) whence pATTu sings
'kAkkai chiRakinilE..' and he gets cured
Oh! it is ung in raagam 'kaakkaivasantham' a raga invented for the movie by KV

OK, the story is done. The screenplay can begin. It can be a low budget movie under Rs. 2000 if everyone in this forum pitches in Re.1 as cmlover suggests (collection may be a problem though). Perhaps as director I should pitch in the entire Rs.2000. All we need now is the dialog and the dabbA lyrics (which I can whip up), a video camera (with the cameraman--I think we have that capability here), 3 characters (a hero, a heroine, and a CM rasika), a place to have a stage where the concerts can take place and we are on. As for my last scene of Switzerland the Red Hills lake in Chennai would serve fine. A low budget movie indeed!
We can sell tickets on the internet at Rs.5 per view and the show will be a webcast. Let us roll! The money we raise can be sent to a noble cause (to support CM).

Thanks for the clarification on esappATTu. I remember now the question/answer debate in song format. Finally one of them gets defeated.
For your sambho mahadeva song in bowLi (bhUpALam?) log on to:
http://www.musicindiaonline.com/music/c ... mposer.94/
then click on the song where it says "lyrics". You get a new window with the lyrics and meanings.
However that version differs in caraNam line from what I have elsewhere. I don't know which is authentic. The version I have has the same pallavi and anupallavi line but the caraNam begins with "AdiyE oru bEdamillAda bhOda nirguNa rUpA". If this is what you are seeking I can post this caraNam. If what you find on the musicindiaonline is what you are looking for then you have it.
