He makes one valid point: that pop (ie film) music is more popular than classical.

Apart from this, he seems hoplessly confused between classical and popular music, and unsure which he writing about.
Gives me the impression that one person told him that there had, once-upon-a-time, been a Golden Age of Indian Music; and another person had told him that at a recent concert there was less than 10% seats filled. On that basis he wrote the article.
Cynical me could be wrong: he could be a great scholar and it was the sub-editor's fault!
