Voice Snap, a Chennai based Software Company has launched a worldwide campaign to help Carnatic music enthusiasts who are in different stages of learning, evaluate their knowledge in rendering carnatic music. At this point in time it is limited only to vocalists but the company has plans to extend it to instruments as well.
Says Ganesh Padmanabhan, CEO, Voice Snap: In today's fast paced world distance and time seems to be a blockade for a lot of youngsters to pursue carnatic music learning. In the absence of a teacher they are not sure if what they are learning using books and other forms are correct. To help them, Voice Snap has teamed up with exponents who are not only performing artists but are also in teaching profession for all levels in the Carnatic music field to evaluate the student’s learning and knowledge.
This is the first of its kind in the world adds Kumar Natarajan, VP – Special Projects. We welcome each one of them who has an interest in pursuing carnatic music learning to send in their rendering to the exponent listed in the website.
Renderings can include Sarali, Janda varisai, Alankaram, Geetham, Swarajithi, Varnam, Krithis, Javalis, Raga aalapana, Niravale etc.
All a student needs is a computer with an internet connection with Voice Snap's VS2 installed. Voice Snap has a free version on their website for this campaign.
Sender's voice clip is evaluated and appropriate feedback is sent directly to the sender of the voice through VS2.
Feedback may include suggestion, tip for improvement, guidance, corrections, advice etc... to further their learning.
Several parents have already started sending in their children's rendering to get it evaluated.

Jayaram,
I do not think all commercial ads are a no-no. Tasteless, irrelevant (sometime ago, there was one for cell phones), and repeated ads will, of course, be asked to be removed. But, for relevant material, people have posted their info here. For instance, carnatica regularly posts stuff about their releases. You and I have written (and 'advertised') for Smt. Kalapagam Swaminathan's CDs. But you are correct about commercial recordings - they are a NO NO! The philosophy behind the 2 are not the same. U/Ling commercial recordings is illegal, while letting people know of relevant material (even in the form of an ad) may be a nuisance for some, but of great value to others.

So when does an ad become 'commercial'? Is it something created with the intention of making money?
Hypothetically, if my sister is a CM vocalist, and I write rave reviews about her here, resulting in people flocking to her concerts and buying her CDs, does that make my post commercial?
The fact of the matter is: however much I rave about her here, rasikas are going to find out for themselves how good she is. As is the case with the product being 'advertised' here.
So, lets not pretend to be the ethics police on a public forum such as this.

Rasam,
I agree, but we have to 'police' ourselves about upload of commercial tracks..In most cases, the uploader is unaware of the commercial nature of the track, and withdraws it when it is pointed out. On other occasions, the u/ls continue and we/someone objects continually!
And I also think that an ad for a cell phone (just an example) would be irrelevant here. I am sure there are umpteen other public fora to advertise for things not relevant to our discussions.
