If you were to think a Rs 1 crore job offer from a US investment bank is too irresistible to turn down, 25-year old IIM-B graduate Manasi Prasad has done just that to pursue her career in music.

She is keen to take up a job in Bangalore so that she can straddle between her job and interests in Carnatic classical music and Bharatanatyam.
Wow! Some passion for music! Has anyone heard Manasi sing?

That is a lot of money for a fresh MBA. I am not sure a Harvard or Chicago MBA without experience will get a starting salary of $225000. That is incredible she turned it down in favor of a music career. Best wishes that her plans and dreams come true.

Usually, the IIM salaries are slightly hyped. Each IIM tries to befriend the media and project their students as the greatest and boost their ranking! However, anything can happen during boom times.

Is that I crore for a month or a Year !!

what difference would it make if the choice is a half a crore offer from a firm in bangalore.
It does not change the basic equations anyway.
Classical Music needs tonnes of time and there is other way about it.
An Institution Like IIM B THAT RESTORES CARNATIC MUSIC TO ITS ROOTS ..
Hmm that needs some loud thinking, though.

Wish these journalists travel to each nook and corner of this great Country -and not just the metros- to see how our Music is sustained.
I shed tears of blood to see some very promising Musicians (HM though) who had excited me so much in the 90s , settle down to a cushy career of teaching software professionals in Blore for astronomical sums - specialise in stress relief through HM for such stressed executives..
For those who are not yet convinced, I suggest a night busride to a distant north Karnataka town like Ron or Bailahongal.Chances are that you will encounter a villager singing glorious songs that smell of the earth.

Or better , spend an evening at sringeri on a Friday and listen to some amateurs singing in praise of the Goddess-
Or best spend a Friday evening at kamakshi temple-in Kancheepuram- between 7.00 and 8.00 Pm.
My Wife tearfully recalls here days of learning under Chandrasekhar Jois in Shimoga..
that strict adherence to a tradition ,no matter what the price..
that path to mastery filled with landmines ,stares, glares, punishments, comparisons to livestock (mostly buffalos) even for small errors .....

An IIM -B like Institution THAT RESTORES CARNATIC MUSIC TO ITS ROOTS ..aaargh.
Fifty years down the line , there may be guys who can take that and swallow it, but not now.
Just last week I had great fun in locating a House with an old fashioned well for a friends son, who had never seen one.The joys of dropping the vessel into the water, the tricky way of filling it , that bath with the cold water ....
It is a world fast disappearing indeed.

Cool,
And the days when vocalists did their practising, submerged up to their necks in the flowing river...

Kji,
You need to start thinking of your autobiography. Just reading your experiences makes me love this country more.

Well , Times change and I am prepared to make allowances for that.

Look at what happened to SpicMacay .Did we see it spreading to grassroots schools.
Students in Metros, IITs remembers with nostalgia , how the famous Dagars sat on mats among them and explored a raga and answered questions.
But what next ??And they never starved for funds.
It is the application of Funds that matters.

Have you heard of that famous harikatha sequence of Bhadragiri Achuth Das where he tells the tale of a modern day student coming back home with a slip from the Principal which says -Some student has broken the Shiv Dhanush and is not admitting to his crime. So the whole school has to pay up.
He traces the story backwards and finds that the old-timer School Inspector starts it all during one of his Inspections.
By asking-
Come on my dear Kids, Can you tell me who broke the Shiv Dhanush ?
The strategically placed intelligent students fail first , then the monitor chips in saying - I know who broke the window pane yesterday, but this Dhanush ....
The class teacher admits that his students need a hiding always to get the truth out-If only the Inspector had given a days notice, he would have the truth out.
All the while , the Inspector is getting redder and blows his fuse when the Principal offers to dash out a note to each parent and recover the sum...
Most of the parents pay up , until one granny in one house wonders about it all.
This is an exaggeration -of course-of the state of things today and great material for somebody like Achuth Das to take a pot shot at modernity- But as we recovered from the aching stomachs -uncontrollable laughter-a truth dawned on us very softly.Sure we are hurtling in the wrong direction.

Anybody serious about future generations will have to worry about the various kinds of music pounding on the senses of youngsters from various quarters.
And here we are trying to be more and more elitist.
forget IIM and just drop in at one of the sessions conducted by MET of TRS .One will notice that the sessions are free and not even one row filled up.I have seen this so often.
Ah ! There is so much that we can do with a fraction of a crore.
And to Hell with sponsors, too.
If we have the will.
Only to build centres of excellence, which will invite the Initiated and the greenhorn alike by saying :Olage Baa Yathrikane'
Money has never fuelled excellence in art in the past and will never do so in future. That is my take.

My story will be the story of someone IN LOVE WITH THIS WONDERFUL CITY CALLED CHENNAI.
I am here by choice and this has never interfered with my Love for own Native town / State or tongue.
To grow up in this city and gradually mature into a lover of Music is an experience that is beyond words.

**waking up at 11 pm , ears plucking up at the sound of a TNK recital , walking down the KothandRam Koil street and to the temple to see TNK play for a samll gathering of 30 in a temple.

** Or noticing that Thirupparkdal Veeraraghavan is entering the Landladys flat , violin tucked under the arm and wondering whether to continue tying my shoe laces (since i am already late for the 2.30 pm shift) or stay back and observe how CM comes to life. The Violin Vidwan updating The inmates about all the musical happenings from the last time they met , some unprogrammed playing , a long forgotten request for a new krithi , Sankara Iyer slowly opening up and expanding on a new thought.

So sbala ,my story is the story of a chap who stayed back and placed his ears to the Window Frame.
Do you think these stories will Sell ?
:P

All the ingredients for sustaining the Glory of CM are around us.If only we can cut down on our pace , and put up the right props.

I second that - it would most certainly sell!

About Manasi Prasad, letting go of a crore (even if we discount some hype) for a career in dance and music takes some commitment - and at that age, a lot of character...

I heard her at Narada Gana Sabha this season - there was a fine Saveri followed by Sankari Sankuru and another pleasant rendition in Yadukulakambhoji - there are some rough edges but I could see plenty of potential...

Incidentally TNS' son, Krishna, is a product of IIM Lucknow and Sriram Parasuram, an alumnus of IIM Calcutta....IIMs promoting CM or any other art form doesn't make much sense but it is good to note that CM's appeal is strong enough to resist the temptation of a cushy career...
