Malladi Bros - Vidya Bharathi - 24DEc- 6.30pm slot

Post by Carnaticworldmusic »

Violin B Ananthakrishnan

Namasivaya - dhanyasi - adhyaatma raamayanam keertanai - swarams - was ok rendition- could have started with a better kruthi
budhamashrayami - wednesday - nattakuranji - was a good rendition with saahitya clarity
sri Narasimha - phalamanjari - v nice ragam by vocalists - best take away in the concert - violin alapanai was ok - swarams were done but limited - kruthi rendered in medium to slow speed I/o usually desaadi fast pace
Endhuko nee manasu- Kalyani - adi 2 Kalai - tyagarajar - most exquisitely beautiful rendition - so so moving - paisa fully vasool this one - no manodharma - just plain kruthi was rendered so well - will cherish this long time
ranganathude- saurashtram
MAin - Sahana - giripai - ragam niraval swarams - was ok - again v slow and sedate rendition but overall good - in 2nd speed swarams one of the brothers struggled a bit and somehow they did a korvai and finished
tani started off slowly in line with the kruthis bhaava and structure being slow and meditative but somewhere down the line the tani picked up pace and became a bit aggressive
overall full concert was bit slow - and they did a fair bit of talking about diff kruthis and bhakthi aspects
RTP _Ranjani - thisra triputa -khanda gathi - alapanai was really good vocal especially and violin also ok
taanam also nice but v limited in view of time - mahadeva ranjani -nikhila lokha Jana ranjani= something like this - eduppu was there and not a samam pallavi - I left at this point
I think after RTP they may have sung padam or javali - but I had to leave
again for a ticketed concert this one lacked energy and audience engagement
strangely more audience for Ashwath and fewer for Malladis - I was quite surprised by this as malladis even now as they are bit aged - they did so much better than Ashwath I felt

Carnaticworldmusic,
Thanks for your detailed review. Not being in Chennai for the season, reviews mean more to us absentees.

I can understand your reaction to listening to their treatment of this kalyAni kriti. That's what appeals to me about Malladi brothers' music. A kritii presented on a platter as it were. I like them for that kind of 'niRaivu' (sumptuousness) in such a presentation of theirs. Nedunuri gAru fondly recollected when the sishyAs do that...

I guess the mridangist might have been the son of one of the brothers?

Mridangam was not Sivanand (son of one of the brothers) but it was another vidwaan by the name of Parupalli - descendent of the Parupalli family and this was announced by the Malladi Bros.
yes yes - they have indeed inherited a corpus of kruthis from their Gurus and father too, the renditions of which are unmatched and can be said as pramaanam
just like muruga Tirumala maruga, Senthil andavan, janaki pathey, etc are DKJ soththu

Same Smt Pantula Rama in one of her concerts has sung Karu Velpulu kalyani - one of the best renditions -available as audio in YouTube - highly recommend to listen - Alathurs used to sing (but that recording quality is poor) - this is the best rendition so far

Thank you. What a ride! What joy! The song gaining its heft in mood and meaning with the two musicians (both being vocalists and instrumentalists). The meaning of the words further given a sheen because of the couple's natural feel for the lyrics. A special piece to add to the list of repeated listening.
