Kutcheri season has its amplification microphone perils .Last year i had a chance to attend this 6 AM ekaantha eva organized by VVS Murari and family. This year wanted to attend atleast this one as it is many years since i attended these sisters(atleast a decade plus)

The USP is just not no microphones but also they lit the oil lights where you get a miniature Gurvayoor like feel .First of all kudos to the organizers. Unlike last time where i entered at 06 01 am this time i went 15 mins before .AT that time the Vijay Ganesh -Sruthi Sarathy and Udupi Srikanth were there along with VVS Murari and two more from his family. Apart from me there was just may be one more rasika , the two vidushis just joined with Cienu possibly taking his time to park . The count of organizers-Artists-Rasikas for a brief time is 3-5-2 kind of living with most sabhas in madras . Then the two sisters had a galloping rasika crowd that atleast multiplied by 10.

I sat behind the two percussionist . When the signature slokham began i could hear the lovely shurthi voice of Aishwarya to start with . Then a nice racy bright shanmughapriya came in with siddi vinayakam with nice swaras. I did not hear the violin at all so at the end of shanmughapriya i moved and sat behind violin . FOr violin atleast you need microphone for sure.

Post shanmughapriya , hearing chandrajothi was really a great choice .Bhagayanayya gives a certain contemplative mood and both sisters did very well.

The younger saundarya sang a beautiful slokham connecting kaveri and had lines with jambu . Since it was yamunakalyani , i assumed jambupathe will be sung . Have i missed hearing any recording of jambupathe sung by MS Amma . My memory fades now or is that composition not sung or recorded by ms amma . I have heard DKJ/DKP school and MLV singing this jambupathE but not ms amma. THe rendition of jambupathe was really exceptionally good.

Time for main for the madurai lineage artists and it was meenakshi me mudham . THe alapana was methodically sung by Aishwarya . Aishwarya has great power and melody that i am noticing far more than last time i heard . They did well , the krithi was well sung , the callibration of vijay ganesh was also bit reduced and with nice rotation of shruthi by sarathy's daughter it was an apt selection for the morning 6 AM to 7 30 AM when slowly sunlight is just entering on neraval settled very well . Swaras were with the flow of the krithi and they did well for the concert

This is a raghavendra kovil . Taking Tunga Teera was a brilliant choice . Maharajapuram santhanam is the karanakartha for this song, they did it very well. Tune is kind of different with salagabhairavi start as a slower tempo than the usual fast padavini. Towards the second half they could have emoted bit more by singing few lines with repetition . THe bhajan or abhang came out well , for a brief time Aishwarya took the cymbals , thank god she did not play at all . I dont want to come to ever a bhajan vittala sampradaya cymbal based song in a Carnatic concert. From the audience maitreem bhajatha was requested and the sisters sang very well keeping ms amma aura intact.

Sruthi sarathy from California ,from Lalgudi school played with nice fidelity. She has great Sruthi and does give a lot of space to vocalist . I know Vijay Ganesh is a junior most student of Kumbakonam Rajappa iyer , since he is also settled in usa , we hardly hear him, but if you hear him you will wonder why he settled in usa . FOr the first time i am hearing the kanjira artist Udupi Sridhar, he was very sweet to obediently play when Vijay asked him to for most time, it is good for this chamber 2 percussionist may be overkill. Tani was slightly aggressive for the super silence sabha, also could have bit shorter for the strict 90 mins concert.

I had a brief time to smile at the sisters who did not recognize . cienu felt i knew you but he did not know me till i told, he was asking are there any reviews there are for sure cienu you should see it . For me the biggest discovery is to her saundarya voice she has a lot of emote , cherry picks nice spots and sings , Aishwarya sings with a lot of bhakthi and she leads with lot of excellence. I did miss one slokham/viruththam (the first one is just a small launch pad , in these setting to hear human voice in slokham/viruththam is priceless.

Overall a very good to excellent concert for 90 mins

Glad to hear about the concert of my two favored, talented youngsters. One of the gifts that they garnered from their great grandmother is their shraddha. While Aishwarya reflects the anchoring of the performance in solid grounds along with her imaginative prowess (trained also in HM), Saundarya's creativity and the way she emotes are special. A richly expressive dancer too she is. Bless them both and their art.

Thank you rajeshnat for your kind review. It did take some time for me to recognize you as it was more than a decade since we met. The last time was probably at Sri Nageswaran’s home in T’Nagar with MKR too present along with a few more rasikas.
The virutham sung by my younger daughter Saundarya is a composition of Appaya Dikshitar and the script in Sanskrit is as below:

Jambupathe was taught by Sangita Kala Acharya Vidushi Smt Neela Ramgopal to my younger daughter S Saundarya. (Rajesh is right that my grandmother has not sung this Dikshitar Krithi)
If you look at the other compositions my daughters sang
‘Siddhi Vinayakam’ – my daughters learnt from Vidwan Sri A S Murali under whose tutelage they currently are.
‘Baagayanayya’ was learnt by my elder daughter Aishwarya from Karnataka Kalashree Vidushi Smt Jambu Kannan ( a disciple of Vidwan Sri TN Seshagopalan)
All the other remaining compositions including ‘Meenakshi Me Mudham’ my mother Smt Radha Viswanathan had taught Aishwarya
The atmosphere at the venue was truly divine and as mentioned one does get a Guruvayur type of feel with oil lamps lit and the artists performing directly facing the Brindavan. Sri VVS Murari must be complemented for this unique concert format which encompasses three factors. Early morning, no mikes and no electric lights. Prasadam comprising of steaming hot Ven Pongal and Ulundu Vada was served to all those who attended
Sruti Sarathy on the violin was exemplary and Vijay Ganesh and Udupi Srikanth anchored the percussion segment with aplomb.
Thank you Arasi for your kind words. It is always a pleasure to hear from you.
I am enclosing a few pictures taken at the program.

Simply lovely pictures Cienu, reflecting the ambience you describe. Vidwan Murari
needs to be appreciated for finding such a venue to celebrate music at an hour when even a noisy city can be tranquil.

Happy new year to you all, to the little ones too who are growing up fast, I bet! Let the music in your family flourish too!

The ambience looks lovely from the pics.

And jAmbupathE has well and truly become Aishwarya and Saundarya's masterpiece.

My wife and I have been blessed with a girl baby in November. So between all the rollercoasters of marriage and pregnancy, work pressure and now baby care, music and writing has been forced to take a backseat. I sorely miss the season and writing my live reviews and meeting all of you. But I will be back sooner or later.

Srinath,
A happy new year indeed, with all the lovely news that you bring!

Congratulations to you and to your partner on the gift of your offspring. On not visiting the forum for a spell, I missed reading your super reviews too, I thought. You have been busy, super busy with your life! All the best to your new family.

When you do get the time to listen to a concert and have the extra time to write about it. Please do!

Srinath,
Glad that you are blessed with a daughter. I assumed you have moved out of Chennai Radar. Take care of your daughter and family. You can get started writing reviews from Dec 2026.
