Trichur Brothers USP is their copious swara Kalpana and for sure anchored by God given two strong masculine voices that has high degree of sound fidelity it creates a lot of great experience. They were accompanied by their most favoured Elder Brother Trichur MOhan who acts at times like a father, in the sense always quickly wraps the tani and gives more air time , no big theermanams to show their seniority. ALso strategically instead of picking up say LRamakrishnan/Kamalakiran/ Vittal Rangan these brothers strategically bring in a very Sruthi accompolished super violinist Edapally Ajithkumar who plays quickly the essence and gives more air time.MOst importantly this violinist rests a lot and perhaps plays with more focus . All said the 2 and half hours concert had a feel of 3 hours concert(Tx to Mohan-Ajith -BSP trio)
They started with hamsadhwani and a round of swaras , i had issues in hearing the kanjira and also the mrudangam .There was lot of adjustments orchestrated by a lady who was the conduit to brothers to the sound engineer. GanarAjena is a MD Krithi that has a typical fast feel this MD krithii gives a #2 drop feel that is more usually felt with a thyagaraja krithi. Arabhi swaras were engineered like a colonial cousin style .
Bhupalam- REvagupti- Bowli are 3 overlapping ragas . I think films usually show a sunrise which is actually bowli though all of us think it is Bhoopalam sometimes even lyrics are written with bhupalam even though the song may be tuned in actual bowli . THis bhupalam vs revagupti is more difficult to distinguish, they sang a very emotive Pallavi line rAma rAma pAhi rAmA , again a round of big swaras for bhupalam of ST gave a great contrast
ok ok time for downpour. Bantureeti with neraval and swaras always is showcased for 4th and 5th gear speed . Periya Anna Mohan ran with the brothers , neraval and swaras were dense and drew a huge applause . The main was the grand bhairavi . The more expressive srikrishna mohan took a lot of charge and bhairavi alapana was well done , one cannot say it gave all the nuances but hey it was well done. The krithi had a strong voice filled rendition, neraval was detailed with great rotation particularly Ajith . AJith in his part in giving bhairavi Carnatic gamaka excellence than the more bit flat note singing of brothers . THey both sang a round of swaras briefly and they quickly wrapped up. I think it was ok for them to not detail out swaras as RTP may get curtailed. The short bhuvaneshwariyam in mohanakalyani was sung in racy style and it served as a filler between main and RTP, did not make much impact for me

The brothers strong voice is significantly aligned in a Hindustani slant . DarbARi kAnadA is a great raga for two reasons, it gives a lot of meend and longer cycles to sing each phrases and most importantly it has a great janaranjakam appeal. Taanam was very detailed in both speeds , here the coordination of brothers voice - one is masculine and traverses different directions (Srikrishna) and the other more heavier male voice (Ramkumar) kinds of adheres to give more stability.
I recollect reading some where this Pallavi in rasikas . VIdushi Raji Gopalakrishnan sang this Pallavi and i reviewed for sure here , i think it was hamsadhwani adayar concert of Raji . I am not sure if the authorship of the Pallavi is TRS or TMT . I vaguely recollect some vidwan /vidushi wrote in our forum (was that viji subra) that it was TRS Pallavi . Though there is a chance that TMT may have sung and composed it or is it a pracheena Pallavi that GNB took i dont know. Would love to hear the original first time of author. The Pallavi has superb play of words .
The ragamaliga selection was great . Usually for me sivaranjani finishes first and then madhuvanti/darbari kanadA finished next as a tie. But this time the madhuvanti by srikrishna mohan was great and finished 1st. MOhanam was sung by Ramkumar and the violinist who did not play ragam just had a go at the shivaranjani, very high shruthi suddham.
Andal tirupaavai toomani mAdathu could have been slowed down. SOme one in the audience told sing KamalApta kula at the end , this song was used for the first 15 mins to do microphone adjustment . For sure that person was a karanakartha (I know that person very well) This gave kamalaptakula the deserving promotion to be taken as a number instead of that being used a sound testing song.As a no surprise suddenly Ramkumar mohan also sang a 3 min downpour brindavani/vanasaranga swaras at the end . I am particularly happy that they took kamalApta kula , otherwise they may have dropped a bhajan /abhang and asked us to clap. Time was close to 09 45 they ended with their family slokham that combines chandrasekara and eesha.
The brothers introduced all the coartist including pranams to 50 year playing and still playing with confidence Trichur Mohan. They introduced shri Mohan started with chembai and gave a lot of names ,they forgot TRS , some one from audience again prompted and they said ofcourse TRS . Without TRS there is no MOhan for me atleast.
I had a chance to drop this great vidwant Edapally Ajith kumar in Teynampet as he had 11 pm train to Ernakulam. HE told his guru is Nedumangad Sivanandan (no clue about him), he comes from Kumbakonam Rajamanickam pillai(KRP) Parampara , KRP is known to have high Sruthi and is known for keeping returns terse , certainly Ajith is a truly a great star(we need more from kerala like Ajith/Srivalsan Menon/VR Dileep kumar/Nanjil ARul/Palakkad mahesh) .
When you have lot of swaras and in general racy style of singing , you should give more violin Sruthi fidelity, certainly brothers hand picked them. Mohan plays a 10 mins tani and Ajith skips even the raga all the more reason for brothers to move from excellence to outstanding. I heard Ajith goes to kerala for a day and comes back for the brothers for SKGS concert. BSP looks young but he was introduced that he plays for 40 years , significant time did not hear him but he played with lot of passion in tani and RTP
One nitpick, previous concert ended sharply at 06 45 , They went to dias to 06 55 , kept adjusting once with each brother , then violinist, then mrudangam then kanjira concert started 07 15 pm plus . Konjam excessive focus on sound adjustments pains me , i wanted to be before 10 PM at home , i had to arrive at 10 15 pm had a nice extended tani avarthanam that sangeetha lokathil dhruvan Mohan skipped to play.
All said kudos to the trichur brothers , particularly their unknown guru neyyantikkara mohanachandran who gave them maximum training on manodharma (improvisation) apart form many gurus.
Overall an excellent to outstanding concert for 2 hours and 30 mins
