There was a very committed rasika N Shankar Subramanian who must have definitely seen this rasikas who had passed away few years back . I have briefly talked with him ,not introduced my name. He and his wife Anuradha are intense rasikas of Carnatic classical , kind of Madras top rasika .They also were part of Sanjay Subrahmanyan intense ring team of rasikas. For sure atleast this couple were seen in lot of concerts. A year or two before , i suddenly knew the news that shankar Subramanian passed away and that was devastating for all for sure . I saw listing of ragasudha concerts wherein his name (Late N Shankar Subramanian), his wife kept a rememberance day under the name Shankar Krupa trust
I have personally not heard Abhishek Ravishankar. The first time i saw him was he was a tambura artist behind his musical anna Abhishek Raghuraman. I just googled to find now that he has learnt from his amma Smt Kowsalya , AS murali (guru of abilash and srivatsan). I also see a reference to a name Late Tafe Mahadevan, who is also his grandfather. Tafe Mahadevan is well known in rasikas ring
IT was a Monday and the venue was Ragasudha hall , sharp 06 15 pm , the todi alapana was boomingly started . The trust and the patron just did not foucs on any paraphernalia , straight music. i also saw a cheer leader sitting a row behind me in the crowd Kruthi Vittal(Bhat) . The start was a Todi alapana and era napai is surely a clean anthakalathu start , he started well, konjam balance of mrudangam and violin was bit missing for me to enjoy more.
Then came the best of #2, Shri Ranjani especially brocheva, the Pallavi itself is so forthcoming with sparkling intense non time wasting sangathis , Abhishek Ravishankar indeed did very well with superb towing by sumesh-LRamakrishnan-Sharma trio. Submain was a standard poorvikalyani. Almost forgot this rare T krithi, i felt he could have transitioned bit more with cleaner musical curves in neraval and swaras to give bit more poovikalyani punch
Oho KalamE came into existence with Dandapani Desigan rendition and surely popularized by sanjay and he sang very well. It is a little tricky raga sahana , most of the sahanas has a little more wait state of serenity, this and possibly one more have a little faster gestalt . Oho KAlamE was a nice drop
Sucharita was well sung , tricky ragam . In my life i heard very first time this ragam by the late genius Mandolin Srinivas. Such a beautiful ragam and surely sucharita quality was significantly better than the previous sahana. IT was Time for fast number.Niravadhi sukada with few rounds of cittaswaras and swaraprastharam was well done , he could have gone bit more with better turns during swaras and could have extended bit more
Main was Bhairavi and i will never complain. Clean alapana of bhairavi and the krithis rendition was very well done . I assumed with lot of thamizh drops he will head towards MD or SS Swarajati .In Chandra bimba neraval he built up well but could have segued better with swaras to give a big 5 anthastu. Possibly he planned to sing quite a bit of tukkkadas and had to consciously cut short. Tani for 18 mins was bit long , almost the first round itself was like a significant tani.
All the tukkadas were well choosen . The words of bharathiyar is tuned by many artists with their own ideas . If my memory is right This ninnnaye Rathi in bhageshri was tuned by sanjay. The best tukkada pick was unquestionably ArumO aval , I have personally heard this number when MLV sang live in MFAC. Very very nice krithi that gives a near submain like anthastu is GNB-MLV popularized thukkada. Very difficult composition as there is boatload of words and Maand classicism was well retained. The preceding viruththam in Mand could have been dwelt bit more. Darbari kAnada is a raga that is intensely janaranjakam , the supernova genius S kalyanaraman has done wonders with this thillana composition , at some point even phrases like thillana thillana is used to give a mini neraval like status
Sumesh played very well , but he can stay for the course of the song with bit more regimented longer cyce of sarvalaghu. Slighly higher dose of excess pattern change . All said like his Guru Tiruvarur Bhakthavatsalam , he plays with right energy more like of how his guru played for Santhanam and MLV of early years. Chandrasekara Sharma is awesome , right fingering presence and no over doing at all.
The pick of the whole team is the violinist L Ramakrishnan . For say 5 years back , for atleast 10 years i used to think of extreme excellence in violin accompaniment with the penta team of S Varadarajan- Late Nagai Sriram- HN Bhaskar - Akkarai subbulakshmi -Charumathi Raghuraman. If i need to bring quarter to half a generation artist into the team, i will start with L Ramakrishnan. He is brilliantly towing and keeping proportion sacrosanct which legends of legends in violin have not done in the past . He kind of reminds of say Delhi sundarrajan of 1990s gives lot of space to main vocalist. Most importantly his press is perfect and well rounded . Tani was slightly long, Sumesh has a lot of ideas and perhaps he is taking the right step to polish but some restraint during course of song of not having so many patterns will help. For this upcoming artist , little less pattern change will help
Thanking Shankar Krupa team(Anuradha and others) who had 3 or 4 concert series , i only attended this . As Abhishek recollected few things about Shankar , let his grace along with Supreme Shankar make this abhishek perform with more and more excellence.
Overall a very good to excellent concert for 2 hour and 30 mins
