Re: Vivek Sadasivam@Madhuradhwani On Oct 16th,2025
This is the first time i am hearing Vivek Sadasivam in a live concert.Had some time on a working day and i was just few minutes late. Hope he did not start with any viruththam /slokham . Vivek has an engaging masculine voice anchored extremely high in classicism . If i could say i will put him in the bracket of extremely well prepared musicians say like Prasanna Venkatraman, Ramakrishnan murthy, Girijashankar etal . The on spot creativity is kind of slightly sacrificed with extreme homework . Extreme homework nevertheless this does not mean they dont have great music . The key is they keep us engaged without an iota of classical dilution
Start of Saami ninne in shree ragam was well done .Varnam in second speed was closely shadowed by the brilliant phenomenal violinist varadu and shree ragam was indeed well started . Mohanam usually you hear a main say nannu palimpa , Mohana rama,RTP etal , some times Narasimha agacha say by Semmangudi school as may be a submain like drop.
To hear mohanam as drop #2 that competes with say nattai or maayamalavagowlai is a fresh unheard approach for a rasika like me who hears a lot for sure. I did not know either the krithi , that had garbhapurivasar mudra , i recollect reading sometime back the four karur brothers some times write as garbhapurivasar. I am speculating they would have had a mohanam fight in 1870s at their home where one wrote the krithi, two brothers wrote 2 cittaswaras and then did the 4th brother sang a chiselled swaras or were all the cittaswaras tuned by say GNB etal i dont know. Mohanam was fantastic the joy of lakshya heavy cittaswaras followed by lakshana heavy Kalpana swaras was mohanam spread like a typical joy you get from illayaraja sir panoramic scores in film music anchored in mohanam.
I found the next alapana a bit of confusion . Did he sing few avoidable sancharas of poorvikalyani or subhapantuvarali within the broader canvas of kumudakriya. When the alapana was on my mind, I was only thinking of only one krithi . I was also thinking how will this musician who comes from the Parampara of nadajyothi .HE sang surely well but i would have been more joyful when there is more noticeable lift . Also in Kalpana swaras for a significant half there was kanakku , i wish he zoned post that kanakku to more sarvalagu but kumudakriya just did not register that well
Lovely slokham started , i was seated with limited audience that includes just not Arkay Ramakrishnan . I am nowadays seeing a lot Bombay Madhavan the violinist , he is bit like TRS Mama Jr in attendance . WHat a slokham it was , he referred a A4 Paper (not a problem at all more words at times is good for slokham) but he segueing to tamarabharani kanthimati was distilled lovely KAnadA
A rare saranga emidova did come out next .I have not heard in live concert , i think DKP and MVI school recording i have heard . There is a noticeable change of tempo in the second half , because of that structure i think it is a fast filler . There was a round of cittaswaras , but saranga as a fast filler was work in progress for Vivek
StormbOdhi came in , romba storm illa but still ok. Swati tirunal and say Papanasam Sivan must have taken a mission to create a master piece composition with rasa vilasa /kaana kann koti and challenged the mighty O rangasayi of Sadhguru . Definitely sang very well the krithi that bit had jathis too . Neraval was organic and well done but he avoided little higher registers , swaras were just the course of neraval again. He could have given more on spot creativity in second half that too with varadu -manoj/sunil being there.
Both the tukkadas were excellent . THe first vizhikku thunai , it is thirruppugazh centered on raga rasa anubhavam then a thirrupugazh string of words for a mrudangam layam class ending with perumalE. Rare composition of neelakanta sivan shanmughane was well done .I am hearing that for the first time . I think the krithi was definitely in Piloo (Hindustani Kapi) may be the slokham was only brewed in KApi (or did i mistake piloo there as kapi). THe last rakeshri of purandaradasar was nice
Varadarajan is a genius he has the tonal quality of MSG , and a shadow like playing for some songs and for many songs especially in alapana he just puts a straight bow giving more limelight to the vocalist . MOhanam was fantastic , in kmabodhi i heard a slight un varadu touches of bit drop of excellence . Manoj refused to HIT and that was hit for me.Manoj being a Palakkad Raghu student did zone in brilliantly (By the way Mrudgangam artist ANantha Krishnan has two cousins one side Abhishek Raghuram and other side Vivek Sadasivam) When Manoj zones with known lines he played so beautifully and he was another thyagi like varadu wrapping the tani in 6 mins. Sunil Kumar is a brilliant youngster , his appa tavil vidwan Triplicane Sekar was very good .He has great fingering technique and pauses adequately without excessive overshadowing mruduangam , possibly he got it from Vikku and Selvaganesh .
All said 2 hours 20 mins , hooray Arkay sir make it 2 hours 30 mins , few weeks back i just attended two lovely lecdems on Cho Ramaswamy and Bharathiyar (By Gurumoothy and Isai Kavi Ramanan). 3 in a row all three are new , i have to confess Carnatic Music with right focussed sampradaya is lovely. I see in today FRiday review there is a mention about Arkay concert for next few days , i wish you put your schedule like how sureshvv helps for naadainbam much ahead .Kudos To ARkay Ramakrishnan - the modern day avatar of Nadopasana Srinivasan , Safe Ramabadran and SV Krishnan. When sabhas are dwindling /dwindled he keeps it alive post Covid which is a miracle in madras.
Overall an excellent concert for 2 hours and 20 mins
