Sri. Vijay Siva
Vocal Support - Sanjay Swaminathan
L Ramakrishnan Violin
NC Bharadwaj - Mridangam
S. Sunil Kumar- Kanjira
Bharat Sangeet Utsav -NGS. 6.11.2024

Now a days. the concert duration started to become "less than 2 hours" even with established Vocalists. VS Started at 7.10 and finished at 8.55. But, he beautifully balanced the time with ragam for Latangi, Bairavi, Shanarabharanam. Neraval too for couple of the Kritis. Excellent decoration and excellent acoustics and nice accompanists. What else you want ?

I need to mention his disciple SS. His voice was excellent and fresh. He was singing along with VS many times, which itself shows his promotion to main seat. His voice is like his Guru. VS could have used him more for Swaram or Ragam. Here is a good finding for VS. God bless SS.

Surprise pick for me was Tarangam. Govinda Ghataya.- as Iam from VaragUr and Tarangam is my oxygen. I thoroughly loved it. I also said to him after the concert "normally, Kathaya kathaya madhavam is the only Tarangam you sing but this was sweet surprise for me"

As Metro has closed almost all routes to NGS and heavy downpour during and after the concert. Welcome Music season 2024. Let us enjoy

Somehow, Papanasam Sivan's songs on Lord Muruga are always mesmerising. Would rate 3 songs of PS' are on my top 10 Murugan Songs (on Tamil). Senthil Andavan (karaharapriya), Saravanabhava GuhanE (Madhyamavathi) and Vasantha. MLV and MS enthralled us with this Vasantha Kriti.. "மா தயை நிதியென்னும் நீ, தயை". I think, you have to put "comma" after nee........

Let me talk about this Tarangam:

YadhOda prays that Lord Krishna may bless all with Joy

Oh Govinda
Ghataya- 4th gha and First "Ta" (in Hindi/sanskrit)- Bless with
Paramanatha Amrutam - the nectar of supreme Joy
iha- Here
harE- Oh Hari ...

In SaraNam- Sadguru uses which VS sange "Kunda Sundra radana"- which means "teeth like Kunda Flower". In another Tarangam, he praises his nose - "Champaka nAsam" செண்பகப்பூ மாதிரி மூக்கு.

Anandaraama Deekshitar when says in his Upanyasam - Shukar, while praising Krishna in his preachings to Pareekshit mahArAja- "வாய் கொள்ளாமல் வர்ணிக்கிறார்" என்பார். I don't think there is an Eng translation for this word. Like this. Narayana Teertar praises Lord Krishna with so many anecdotes.

taraṅga gītam-s are indeed wonderful compositions with imaginative picturization of nārāyaṇa tīrtha

Not all the original bhajana tunes lend their rendition apt for presentation in a CM concert save maybe one-two (e.g. vīkṣē'ham kadā in āhiri), hence some have attempted to re-tune them to fit the concert repertoire, for e.g. jaya jaya svāmin (māyāmāḷavagauḷa), kṣēmam kuru gōpāla (hamīrkalyāṇi) and śaraṇam bhavakaruṇāmayi (hamsavinōdini) by the late TMT.

Vijay Siva learnt from the DKJ-DKP school, and aside the piece discussed, they have a pāṭhāntara of rāma mathurānagarī ramya in khaharapriya.

The kalyāṇa taraṅgam, "ālōkayē rukmiṇi kalyāṇagōpālam" is also vogue on the concert stage, the khāmbhōji version set to miśracāpu tāḷa, as well there is a pāṭhāntara in kīrvāṇi.

@grsastrigal:
Yes, NT is very imaginative and choses unique expressions to depict them. One beautiful description is in the line "cāmpēyā nāsāgra lagnasumauktika" in the popular nīlāmbari piece, which roughly translates to, "having a nose like the the jasmine flower (மல்லிகைப்பு, I think), adorned with a pearl."
