Roughly may be 18 to 20 years back there was this tv competition was that super singer first edition. The participants were Bharath sundar, Apoorva Anahita ,sriranjani santhanagopalan,brinda manickavasagan and this young possibly the youngest abilash giriprasad . I hate watching TV competitions as it gives a stunted growth of music and at that time i went to jaya tv margazhi mahotsavam and i lost the interest of that adulterated bhelpuri CM . But my amma kept on saying this young boy abilash sings so well. I think that year Bharath sundar won and this young abilash won the people choice or something . That day that era i had only heard may be Brinda manickavasagan all the rest were new then...

Flash forward i always search music with my own personalized taste. Mostly i am my own influencer . Once i went to pozhichalur for the first time , i got zapped with the founder secy Krishnamurthy and that day for the first time i had a 3 plus hours of my perennial favorite suryaprakash who sang a RTP in kapi narayani . The young kid who sat next to me in pozhichalur was this abilash . ONce i heard abhilash for the first time in bharat kalachar with his sharanam sharanam raghurama in asaveri , i only had tears and once when i went to his pozhichalur concert I also heard him sing a lovely concert .There is one swaras of unnadiye in bahudari , O my god i thought what manodharmam with melakaveri Balaji and MSG narmada .

Flash forward after many years despite being Monday , i wanted to hear him. THank GOd it was vanimahal post concert i can quickly go home and continue work for few hours .Vanimahal Thyaga brahma gana sabha is a great sabha, they start on time , the only gripe they dont give beyond 2 hours. I know this review will be read by vanimahal patrons ,let us keep it from 06 30 to 08 55, another 25 mins please , no point ending at exact 08 30 PM.

Abilash usually starts with this hayagreeva slokham , i think it is the same signature tune of MS amma and this being Sri jayanthi and with young krishna vinyl photo in background, we can kind of guess all songs with the theme known to us . The first i did not guess the rare HMB krithi in mohanakalyani , it was intensely classical konjam i found few traces of Abhishek mohanakalyani . I would state in general abilash base is his grand paramaguru Semmangudi and of late there is a bit of movement towards the one and only MDR.

Brindavana Lola and todi alapana was intensely classical , he kept focussing in the depth of CM and what other raga and what other composer to demonsrate , both are flagship ones the Todi and Thyagaraja wow wow . brindavana lola came out well, especially the neraval konjam MDRish little stay in lower notes was lovely.

Shurutti alapana brought instantly the persona of his grand paramaguru Semmangudi , no meandering like say DR BMK , he intensely hit the shurutti in few seconds , i had no necessity to disambiguate few overlaps like kedaragowlai and madhyamavati etc he sang very well and the alapana was detailed . WIth vinyl krishna in the background i was applying my guess when violin was on as to whether could that be Santhanam popularized paarvai onre podume of OVK. I assumed may be that is a usual tailender song but hooray it got promoted, atleast i was not able to zero any other shurutti song with LOrd krishna theme . OVK words are magical to visualize Lord Krishna and shurutti was carnatically tangled again and again . The next mohanam of PD was well done , the PD krithi exactly was like thamizh AK krithi which is en palli kondeer ayya and i enjoyed it . I dont think i have ever heard this PD mohanam krithi or may be I have forgotten.

The day belonged to the greatest big six raga . O bhairavi what a wonderful charisma bhariavi possesses .Alapana was chiselled methodically and i was thinking hey good is he going toward MD bala gopala . Hooray it was not bala Gopala but it was taanam that followed alapana with lovely return by MAS. i could spot in RTP his one generation before musicians like suryaprakash, Sanjay subrahmanyan extraordinary creativity of singing in madhyama kalam having a keen sense to go methodically to give the bhairavi rasa and consciously build it brick by brick . When taanam was on with the mrudangam he was a semmangudi abilash . MAS is a master he follows more his chitappa MSG than his appa in MSA in taanam he was magician with lovely Parur'ish cut bowing sound . Added to that was without over reacting excess beats by Eswaran it was intense Karnatakam in taanam . Those 9 mins it was a bit of 1950/1960 unheard concert .

It was a Great Pallavi line he used the keyword paranthama for many times to give a more pointed focus to split lines and elaborate bhairavi. In the swara Kalpana the magic of say Shyama in ragamaliga was just too good , i find him following a bit of Suryaprakash or a TRS like approach where he suddenly onspot takes off at a very different tangent where it does not appear as swararagamaliga memory rote but it is more situational understanding of how mruduangam and morsing play and taking cue from their play and momentum and layering swaras over that .

In the tukkadas i wish he did not again sing another 2nd kannada song he could have taken a more gallery thamizh song or may be a beautiful viruththam ending with sparkling bouncing maale manivanna . HE did well but almost all 3 songs till bhujaga sayinam was sung as one big ragamaliga number . Vanimahal cinderalla time of 08 30 was hanging in his head.

MAS has his best strength in cut style bowing , His mastery in bhairavi was more MS Gopalakrishnan Jr approach , during earlier part of alapana returns little more Carnatic intensity and paddathi like play would have made me happier . Mannargudi Eswaran knows how to conserve energy , his experience makes him understand what is coming and he give great round of patterns and sticks with little more zoning like vellore naadabhadran , the good news the veteran is sill playing very well and his play cannot be labelled as a veteran player . I wish after taanam mrudangam he could have wrapped tani bit before, that way he could have given atleast 5 mins to abhilash. Bhagyalakshmi morsing was crisp she takes orders and never tried to overshadow with excessive twang . I enjoyed the most during taanam when she paired well MAS in violin. It is rare to hear morsing that too a bangalore based vidushi in Chennai.

Abilash can do few things bettter for sure

1. Littel more focus on getting janaranjakam , if he had decided Bhairavi as RTP then TOdi also as a submain is a very eclectic choice for a 2 hr cindrella concert , I personally liked it a lot, but could have done better

2. He could have dropped the second kannada song baro krishnayya as it was very tight without spacing that too after ragamaliga in RTP with beats and tani . A little more emote with say a viruththam like Santhanam or a kvn would have made it more spectacular, after all many are there for lord krishna . After ragamaliga swaras another longer ragamalika kannada krithi just did not register that well with the audience and many left is my guess . Planning and Pulling like Rajani gayathri( their paramaguru PSN student) where audience feeling abilash will sing that viruththam as tukkada may help him with more sticky audience. All said Abilash is intensely Carnatic, at no place he appeared to pander to the fusion or light CM mass.

Overall an excellent concert for 2 hours

It is not 18/20 yrs back, exactly 14 : 2010 Carnatic Idol with Dr BMK as chief Guest. Vid. Ganesh/Kumaresh , SrI NSG, Vid Sowmya as judges!
