Personally for me the enthusiasm to hear live Carnatic concert has not gone down, but to get a concert where you get Carnatic music without the adulteration of speeches , themes , calling some personality to promote youtube channels is all diluting live quotient share of intense classicism. After all musicians should grab time to present more the art, than rather promote the art . Promotion can and should be an offline activity that should not eat performance time

It was a Thursday , the two sabhas that are still not outs are the naadainbam and madhuradhwani. I took half a day off and i went to madhuradhwani. Violin concerts are so rare the excitement to hear a brilliant performer like Vittal Rangan did interest me a lot and the combo with Patri indeed was a special pull .

My first tryst to violin concerts was in late 1980s when i went for the first time to a violin concert to hear LGJ and Krishnan in Indian FIne Arts when i was pulled by my relative to hear some thing live other than maharajapuram santhanam. Then a bit later i went once to TNK . Many many years later i went on my own to hear just once when MSG played a solo with Narmadha IN NCA (CCA) in Ramarao kalyana mandapam that was post 2000 in sangeetham days i think . These 3 LGJ-TNK-MSG can be called as violin trinities and certainly Vittal Rangan a student of A Kanyakumari (the finest vidushi whose students are all fantastic) and her Dwaram school which has a overlap to present aesthetics with great lakshya gnanam was indeed there .

Vittal and his wife singer Kruthi Bhat were there along with Kruthi Bhats uncle Vittal Ramamurthy who is one great disciple of LGJ. Madhuradhwani honoured kruthi-vittal couple wedding anniversary and garlanded them The concert had its share of high sense of Lalgudi like touches with number sequencing , the bowing of his was strong like a TNK and there were adequate magic with significant Hindustani glides like MSG.

Start of Reetigowlai never lets me down why because the ragam is reetigowlai. YOu can even be a stone to appreciate reetigowlai and Vittal Rangan did present with right reetigowlai aesthetics, the next was a speedy number bit uncharacteristic of MD but ekadantam in bilahari of MD came out well. What a joy to hear Janaki ramana in sudda seemanthani , i see LGJ and MMI schools intersect a lot in the numbers prior to submain and this number was fantastic with patterns by Undrained battery ably supported by BSP.

What a joy to hear Brindavana Saranga .For many many years after hearing countlessly say a krithi like soundararajam or sreeranga pura vihara ,why did Thyagaraja did not compose any krithi in brindavana saranga. The question was actually fulfilled by the great manakkkal Rangarajan when i heard this kamalapta kula of his . Then bit later i searched to find out Dr BMK has sung kamalapta kula . Incidentally kamalApta was never sung by vocal greats like say Carnatic vocal trinity of MMI-SSI-GNB (I call them as Carnatic vocal trinity), this krithi came only from Manakkal Rangarajan OR BMK for sure. What a joy to hear vittal rangan presentation of brindavana saranga. 95 percent i have only heard violin duet and i find it in general to disambiguate the neraval and swaras some times i dont get it .Vittal playing a violin solo with a distinct neraval in kamalapta kula was fantastic to me .

The contrast of a thamizh krithi with janaranjakam hindolam was well done with nambi kettavar . Did he sing swaras or did i miss noticing it . It was a well done. The third trinity was ticked with varALi of Shyamassastri and vittal played well showing more bowing strength

It was main krithi time , i neither got confused with may be kamas or is that KAMboDhi , it was all along unhurried hari kAMbOdhi. I am not a big fan of harikambodhi getting promoted as main, but one has to appreciate vittal strength that too without support he playing this long alapana was fantastic . Semmangudish dinamani vamsa was heard in my ears and patri raced up so well with clear accentuations in anupallavi was well done.

All the tukkadas were fantastic . Tukkadas should not drop like a filmi style despite one number being Chinnan jiru kannama . BAro Krishnayya was a tribute possibly to AK guru MLV but the last thillana in 3 ragas showed the violin as the queen of instruments (especially during vaasanthi and the next shivashakthi was a GNB creation with first kannada was a nice start)

Patri satish was spectacular , how much patterns and gumkhis he brings even in the Pallavi of every song . He maintains the intense kalapramanam tightness and when there are juicy full toss krithis like Janaki ramana his mrudangam also sings . KVG played very well may be there was a slightly heavier shade of upapakkavadyam support but with the high share of azhuttam of vittal rangan it did not matter . All 3 performed very well with the team.

Do hear Vittal Rangan when you have a chance , he is performing with such intense classicism and kudos to his great guru A Kanyakumari for bringing in the trishakthi violin flair to vittal, late kesavamurthy his first guru , his parents ,also Vittal Ramamurthy family, his wife Kruthi and possibly Vishaka Hari/Saketharaman family(vittal rangan is cousinto Vishaka and Saketaraman) and many more whom i dont know.

Overall an excellent concert of 2 hours and 20 mins

Rajesh,
Good to get your solid, detailed review, that too a rare one on a violin concert. Your resolve of late to write reviews rather regularly, benefits us all. Then again, as in good old days, you bring to us--those of us who barely get to listen to live concerts-- that proximity of a seat in the very concert, in your writing diligently about it and with detail. Your love for music ropes us in too.

I had no idea about Vittal Rangan's this many familial string and musical connections! I had heard him in Bengaluru, even as he had started playing in concerts and thought how promising he was: a sweet sound, with a quiet but keen focus on his playing. I was happy to hear him a few times as he began playing for senior vidwans. Marrying another gifted artiste has been a plus. Congratulations to the young couple on their wedding anniversary. Many more happy ones to follow!

In this concert, Patri and KVG as saha vidwans too!

The song list is rich and varied. Waiting to hear the concert now. Madhuradhwani and Naada Inbam--may they flourish!
