Purandara Dasa's 'krishnA nI bEganE bArO' has been danced to thousands of times, and yes, dancers are looking for other songs of his to give expression to. But this? First of all, I am wondering if this is a PD song at all! Something which goes around with his mudrA? Besides, there are hundreds of lyrically romantic songs of his to sing and to dance to!

This is a spurious one, not PD's, which aImost all of you would agree on. To sing such a song on stage can't be imagined. To dance to it? Heaven forbid!

On scrolling back, I did see dear Ravi's (rshankar) post on it--he being our penultimate translator of innumerable songs in the past so many years. How he brought sensibility to each line of the lyrics with nuance, for them all to reflect finely in a dancer's every expression of the lyrics! Yes, I see he saw no merit in translating this song! We don't see any sense at all in dancing to this song, wherever it came from. Ace translators on board, I hope you all agree on this

We have come across a few padams and jAvalis which test the limits of decorum in being extremely suggestive, which if not executed subtly by the dancer, can be a disaster. In this song, we don't see any subtleties at all! Crass is how we see it. We have enough dance numbers which abound with Sringara rasa, but this one goes even further, without owning any merit of subtlety in its romantic expression.

After looking at the meaning on the Forumhub website, I don't feel that this song is suitable as a dance item. Generally, dancers do explain the meaning of the song they are about to perform. However songs with similar themes are found in Kshetragna's padas and many of these are popular on the dance circles. How does one decide what is suitable and what isn't? It is a matter of individual choice. In any case, if you don't know the language, it does not make any difference.
