I see that there is no discussion on this fabulous Agra gharana vocalist that I chanced upon based on a YouTube recommendation. My primary indulgence is Carnatic music, but I listen to Hindustani with nearly as much interest. Priya is based in Bangalore and Bombay, but was born and raised in New York in a Tamil-American family. Internet readings reveal that a fair bit of her youth was spent training in CM and she turned to HM during a visit to Bangalore in the summer between her junior and senior years in college (Columbia). She trained with Vidushi Aditi Kaikini, daughter of the Agra gharana maestro Dinkar Kaikini (DK). She also trained with DK for a while and has written a book about his musicology and the talim she recieved from him.
Priya has a beautiful classically suited voice, but it is clear she has put in untold hours of riyaaz which clearly reflects in her soaring gayaki. I link two excellent samples below that drove me to raptures. Please listen and comment.
A meditative exploration of Raga Shree:

A cathartic exposition of Raga Shuddh Kalyan (the bada khayal she sings here is the same one that Kirana folks like Bhimsen sing I think):

I am just blown away by her singing. And what conviction it must have taken for a girl raised in American suburbia marinated in Carnatic music to go away and seek a career as a Hindustani vocalist in India and succeed at it! If she comes around to my corner of the world, I will be in the first row listening to her!
