You would know better.

The information is indeed correct. Shri Karaikudi Mani himself has said in an interview he looked much different then. "Oru minor ( a term attributed to a Zamindar's young wards?) mAdhiri than irundEn!" Guru Sri Surajananda changed him and his looks!

His hands, the Kai, I mean the way they rest on the Mridangam and also the sollus, are all very clearly him.

But then, How could you not recognize Sri THV? That should have been no difficult!

1967 was the bicentenary of sadguru tyAgarAjasvAmi. So almost all the artistes sang only tyAgarAjasvAmi kIrtanas without RTPs. On December 25, 1967,

இந்த நிலையில் சண்முகவடிவு தேடிக் கண்டுபிடித்தவர் மதுரை டி.கேசீனிவாச அய்யங்கார். மதுரை பிரதர்ஸ்களில ஒருவரான இவரின் தமையனாரும் இசைக்கலைஞர்தான். இவர்களின் குரு நாமக்கல் நரசிம்ம அய்யங்கார். பெரிய இசைமேதையாக அறியப்பட்டவர். அவர் சண்முகவடிவின் நேர்த்தியான வீணை வாசிப்பை பாராட்டியவர். சீனிவாச அய்யங்காரிடம் சென்று தன் மகளை இசைச்சான்றோர்கள் சபையில் நிறுத்த விரும்பும் தன் ஆசையைச் சொன்னார். தன் குரு பாராட்டிய சண்முகவடிவின் மீது இருந்த மரியாதையால் அதை ஏற்ற அந்த வித்வான், தன் மாணவி பின்னாளில் இசையின் உச்சத்தைத் தொடுவார் என்று அந்த வினாடியில் நினைத்துப் பார்த்திருக்கக் கூட மாட்டார்.

பஞ்சாங்கத்தில் பார்த்து நல்ல நாளும் நாழிகையும் குறித்துக் கொடுத்தார். அந்த நாளில் சம்பிராதயப்படி சரஸ்வதிக்கு அஷ்ராப்பியச பூஜை செய்து தேங்காய் உடைத்து நைவேத்தியம் செய்து, வெற்றிலை பாக்கு, பழத், தட்டில் தட்சணை வைத்து, அம்மாவையும், மீனாட்சி படத்தையும், குருவையும் நமஸ்கரித்த பின் நல்ல வேளையில் சங்கீதப்பாடம் ஆரம்பமாயிற்று. குருவுக்கும் சிஷ்யைக்கும் துவங்கிய அந்த நல்ல வேளை இசையுலகிற்கு நல்ல வேளையாகவும், ஓர் இசை அரசி பிறந்த வேளையாகவும் அமைந்தது.

அந்த நாட்களில் ஸ்ருதி பெட்டி கிடையாது. ஆர்மோனியம் சங்கீதம் கற்றுக்கொள்ள அங்கீகரிக்கப்பட்ட வாத்தியம் இல்லை. சங்கீதம் என்றால் சுருதிக்குத் தம்பூரா மட்டும் தான். இதில் பாடுபவரின் குரல் நயத்துக்கு ஏற்பச் சுருதி சேர்த்து, பின்னர் தான் பாடத்துவங்க முடியும். பல மேடைகள் கண்ட ஒரு தேர்ந்த கலைஞன் பாவாடை சட்டையணிந்த ஒரு சிறு பெண்ணுக்காக அந்தத் தம்பூராவை மீட்டி, குழந்தையின் குரலுக்கேற்பச் சுருதியைச் சேர்த்து ஆரம்பித்தார். முதல் முறையாக, குடும்பத்தினரல்லாத ஒருவரின் முன் சற்றே பயத்துடன் உட்கார்ந்தார் குஞ்சம்மா.

சங்கீதத்தின் பாலபாடமான ச, ரி, க, ம, ப, த, நி, ச எனச் சொல்லிக் கொடுக்க ஆரம்பித்தார்.கற்பிக்கும்போது இந்தச் சரளிவரிசையைப் பாடுவதிலிருந்தே ஒரு குரு தன் மாணவனை மதிப்பிட்டுவிடுவார். அய்யங்கார் பயிற்சி ஆரம்பித்த மூன்றாவது நாளே இந்தப்பெண்ணின் திறன் கண்டு பிரமித்துப்போனார். குறைந்தது இரண்டு மாத காலத்திற்குப்பின்னர்ப் போகவேண்டிய கட்டங்களான சரளிவரிசை, ஜண்டவரிசை, தாட்டு வரிசை, (மூன்று காலங்களில் ஸ்வரங்களைப்பாடுவது) போன்றவைகளை மிக அனாயாசமாக அந்தக் குழந்தை சில நாட்களிலேயேகற்றுக் கொண்டுவிட்டது. ஒரு கஷ்டமும் கொடுக்காத மாணவியை எந்தக் குருவுக்குத்தான் பிடிக்காது?

தன் மாணவி மிக நல்ல பாடகியாகக் கூடிய அடையாளங்களைக் கண்ட குரு, மற்ற மாணவர்களுக்குச் சொல்லிக்கொடுக்கும் வழக்கமான பாணியிலிருந்து மாறி, சரளி வரிசைப்பயிற்சியை வழக்கமான மாயாமாளவகெளளை ராகத்தில் மட்டுமில்லாமல் கல்யாணி, கரகரப்பிரியா போன்ற ராகங்களில் சொல்லிக்கொடுத்தார். பொதுவாக ராகங்களிலமைந்த எளியபாடல்களை கீதமாகச் சொல்லிக் கொடுத்த பின்னர்தான் இந்தப்பயிற்சியை அளிப்பார்கள். அந்த வயதிலேயே ராகங்களுக்கிடையே இருக்கும் வேறுபாடுகளைப் பாடல்கள் மூலமாகக் கற்காமல் எளிதாக ஸ்வரஸானத்திலேயே புரிந்துகொண்டாள் அந்தச்சிறுமி.

ஆனால் அந்தச் சிறுமிக்கு அந்தக் குருவிடம் நீண்டநாள் பாடல் கற்கும் வாய்ப்பில்லாது போயிற்று. வெளியூர்கச்சேரி ஒன்றுக்குச் சென்றிருந்த சீனிவாசஅய்யங்கார் வைகுண்ட பிராப்தி அடைந்துவிட்டார்.

ஆனால் ஷட்ஜமமும், பஞ்சமமும் சுவாசமாகவே ஆகிப்போன குஞ்சம்மா, அய்யங்காரிடம் கற்ற அரிச்சுவடியில் எழுந்த அசைக்க முடியாத அஸ்திவாரத்தில் ஒரு பெரிய மாளிகையைத் தன் கேள்வி ஞானத்திலேயே எழுப்பிக் கொண்டிருந்தார். தொடர்ந்து எந்தக் குருவிடமும் பயிற்சி எடுக்காமல் பாடத் தொடங்கிவிட்டார். அம்மாவின் கச்சேரிகளில் ஒரு சில பாடல்கள் பாடியவர் மெல்லத் தனிகச்சேரி செய்ய ஆரம்பித்தார்.

அதன் பிள்ளையார்சுழி ஒரு சௌராஷட்டிர செல்வந்தரின் வீட்டுத்திருமணத்தில் போடப்பட்டது. “யார் இந்தச்சின்னப்பெண்?” அருமையாகப் பாடுகிறார் என்பதும், “சண்முகவடிவின் பெண் நன்றாகப்பாடுகிறாள் தெரியுமோ?” என்பதும் மதுரை நகரம் முழுவதும் பேச்சாயிற்று.

.இசைக்கலைஞர்கள் கிராமபோன் இசைதட்டுக்கள் கொடுக்க ஆரம்பித்திருந்த காலம் அது, 4 மணிநேர கச்சேரிகள் செய்யும் ஜாம்பவான்கள் 45 நிமிடத்திற்குள் பாடுவதா? எனப் பொங்கி எழுந்து எதிர்த்தவர்களும் இருந்தனர். நம்மை விளம்பரப்படுத்திக் கொள்ள நல்வாய்ப்பு என அந்த இசைவடிவை ஏற்றவர்களும் இருந்தனர். இங்கிலாந்திலிருந்து வந்த இசைத்தட்டு கம்பெனி இந்தியாவில் சாஸ்திரிய இசைக்கிருக்கும் மதிப்பை சரியாக உணர்ந்து வியாபார வாய்ப்பை நழுவவிடாமல் , பெரியவித்வான்களிடம் ‘காலமெல்லாம்நிற்கக்கூடிய” இசைத்தட்டுகளின் பெருமைகளைச்சொல்லி, இசைதட்டுக்கொடுக்கச் சம்மதிக்கச் செய்து கொண்டிருந்தார்கள். அப்படி ஒரு வாய்ப்பு சண்முகவடிவின் வீணைக்கும் வந்தது. இது அவருக்குப் பணம் ஈட்ட ஒருவாய்ப்பாக மட்டுமில்லாமல், அவரது புகழையும் பரப்பவும் உதவியது. ‘இசைத்தட்டுகள் தந்திருக்கும்’ எனக கச்சேரிகளில் விளம்பரம் செய்யப்பட்டிருக்கிறது. முதலில் தந்த சில இசைத்தட்டுகள் விற்பனை நன்றாக இருந்ததால், சென்னையிலிருந்த 1925 ல் எச்.எம்.வி. கம்பெனியிடமிருந்து அவரது வீணை இசையை ஒரு புதிய இசைத்தட்டுக்கு ரிக்கார்டிங் பதிவு செய்ய அழைப்பு வந்தது.

அப்போது இருந்த நவீன டெக்னாலஜிகளுடன் அதற்கு ஒரு ஸ்டூடியோவும் இருந்தது. முதலில் சோதனை, பின்னர் ஒரு மெழுகுதட்டில் அந்த இசை பதிவுசெய்யப்பட்டு மிகப் பாதுகாப்பாக கல்கத்தாவுக்கு அனுப்பப்படும். அங்கு அது இசைதட்டுகளாக வடிவம் பெறும். இந்தியா முழுவதும் அனுப்பப்பட்டு விற்பனையாகும். இசைதட்டுக்கள் ஒலிப்பதிவு என்பது அந்தக்காலகட்டத்தில் மிகவும் சவாலான பணியாக இருந்திருக்கிறது. ஆரம்ப காலங்களில் இங்கிலாந்திலிருந்து நிபுணர்கள் வந்து செய்திருக்கிறார்கள். பல முறை ஒத்திகை பார்த்த பின்னரே ரிகார்டிங் செய்யப்படும். ஒரு சிறு தவறு ஏற்பட்டால் கூட முழுவதும் மீண்டும் பாட வேண்டும். சில சமயம் இது தொடர்ந்து சில நாட்கள் கூட நடைபெறும், இதற்காக அதிகமான சன்மானம் எதுவும் கிடைக்காதாதால் வித்வான்கள் ரிகார்டிங்களில் அதிக ஆர்வம் காட்டவில்லை.

ஆனால் சண்முகவடிவு இசைத்தட்டுகள் வருங்காலத்தில் ஏற்படுத்தக்கூடிய தாக்கத்தைப் புரிந்து கொண்டு இசைத்தட்டுபதிவு செய்வதை விரும்பிச்செய்து கொண்டிருந்தார்.அந்த ரிகார்டிங்குக்குப் போகும்போது தன் 10 வயது பெண் சுப்புலட்சுமியையும் அழைத்துப்போனார் சண்முகவடிவு. தனது ரிக்கார்டிங் முடிந்தவுடன் சண்முகவடிவு “இவள் என் பெண். நன்றாகப்பாடுகிறாள். இவளது பாட்டையும் ரிக்கார்டாகப்போடுங்களேன்” என்று எச்.எம்.வி. மானேஜரிடம்கேட்டார்.

“என்னது? இந்தச்சின்னப்பெண் பாடுவதை யார் கேட்பார்கள்? அதற்கு இன்னும் கொஞ்சம் வயசாகட்டும்.”

“இல்லை, நீங்கள் கேட்டுவிட்டுச்சொல்லுங்கள் மிக அழகாகப்பாடுவாள்.”

எச்.எம்.வி. மேனேஜருக்கு என்ன சொல்லுவது என்று தெரியவில்லை. மதிப்புக்குரிய ஒரு முன்னணிக் கலைஞரின், நன்றாக விற்பனையாகும் ஒரு இசைத்தட்டு தந்த கலைஞரின் வேண்டுகோளைத் தட்ட முடியவில்லை.

“சரி, நாளை கேட்பதற்கு ஒருவர் வருவார். அவர் கேட்டு சரி சொன்னால் பார்க்கலாம்”என்றார்.

மறு நாள் காலை பரிட்சைக்குக்காத்திருக்கும் மாணவியின் பதற்றத்துடன் அம்மா சண்முகவடிவும், எந்தக்கவலையும் இல்லாமல் சாதாரணச்சீட்டி (காட்டன்துணியில்ஒருவகை) பாவாடை சட்டையில் இரட்டைப்பின்னலுடன் மகள் சுப்புலட்சுமியும் ஸ்டூடியோவில் காத்திருந்தனர்.

அன்றைய காலைப் பொழுதிலேயே சண்முகவடிவும் அவரது மகள் சுப்புலட்சுமியும் வந்து காத்திருந்த போதும் பாட்டைக்கேட்க வேண்டியவர் வருவதில் தாமதமாயிற்று. எச்.எம்.வி நிறுவனத்தில் இசைத்தட்டுக்கு பாடல்களைப்பதிவு செய்யும் ரிகார்ட்டிஸ்டுகள் நல்ல சங்கீத ஞானம் மிக்கவர்கள். ஆனாலும் அவ்வப்போது வெளியாட்களை அழைத்துப் பாடுபவர்களின்குரல், தேர்ந்தெடுக்கும் பாடல்கள் பற்றி அவர்களிடம் கருத்து கேட்பார்கள். அன்று அப்படி அழைக்கப்பட்டிருந்தவர் ஓர் இசைவிமர்சகர், பத்திரிகையாளர். நுழைந்தவுடன் சின்னப்பெண்ணான இந்தக் கத்துக்குட்டியின் பாட்டைக் கேட்கவா என்னை அழைத்தாய்? என்ற தொனியில் எச்.எம்.வி.யின் மேலாளரை பார்த்துவிட்டுப் போய் அறையில் அமர்ந்தார்.

சுப்புலட்சுமியை பாடு என்று சொன்னவுடன் ‘மரகதவடிவும்செங்கதிர்வேலும்’ என்று ஆறுகட்டை சுருதியில் சங்கதிகளை உருட்டி ஒரு பெரிய வித்வானுக்கு உள்ள கம்பீரத்துடன் பாடினார்.

What an incredible Shanmugapriya! Ragam, tanam, pallavi, neraval and kalpanaswaram. MS Amma has done a lot incredibly creative stuff in the short 24 min available.

Whatever few recordings of MS Amma survive from the 50s and early 60s show that she was truly a force of nature at her prime and there were indeed the days of those very long live concerts when her creativity could have a field day. The farther back one goes in time the more astonishing it gets - a voice that could do anything what the mind wanted. She was not just the empress of Shankarabharanam, but also Shanmugapriya.

Unfortunately the lack of recordings from that period has contributed to much incorrect bias in the modern perception of her music.

I've read on a blog recently that there is a 1959 Shanmugapriya which shows the full range of her voice at her peak. I was looking for that one when I found this.

Recently there is a nice 5 part interview given by @cienu on YT, where among many interesting things about MS Amma's music, he talks about how TK Murthy mama once told him about how she had sung Manirangu for more than 1 hour on a train journey.

I am not sure if i have recollected that right , I think it is carnegie hall 1979 , i dont know if prior to her if any one had elaborated this krithi with such perfection.
