For many years atleast say circa 2000 to 2010 there was a kalarasana rani seethai hall (near gemini),BGS and MFAC which does not split as two evening slots with two - 2 and half hours .Even 15 mins makes a huge difference as there can be a neraval or ragamaliga long song and a definite RTP. BGS retains the charm, mudhra has joined the charm, pozhichalur has more charm but not many go there. MFAC pushed from 6pm to 06:30 pm start but i was glad the concert did not end at 09:00 pm instead of 09:30 pm

Start of sanjay in mohanam varnam was strong . His voice was booming but i did not hear the violin that much . It was more of percussion and sanjay . Sanjay front line team ensured that it was corrected and they made correction with the reetigowlai . Nannu vidachi is one spectacular particularly lines kothanda rama, kalyana rama they ooze with bhakthi and for a guy who has lost bhakthi this krithi some what takes me there. Swaras were very short but definitely impactful

The krithi of the day was to me chalanattai . This raga the ancient vidwans of SSI-MMI-GNB missed singing it , perhaps apart from S Rajam the popularity of this krithi is only due to S kalyanaraman and TRS . What a lovely raga is chalanattai it is breezy , a touch of sorrow but always looking progressive and never allows you to squat. Personallly loved this rendition with superb krithi rendition and swaras . Bhoopathy and rajaganesh did magic and vinu also gave a great succint returns

Devi pavanE in saveri took me to a land which in my life i wanted to go atleast once and spend a week there. the land was thiruvananthapuram and sanjay sang saveri well. Voice quality was bit there and shruti went distinctly off in few places but with complete charge and ideas sruti faltering appeared bit minor. Neraval was done very well . I personally adore Semmangudi and Saveri and sanjay gave me enough pointers in that jambhavan direction

Nattaikurinji alapana was well done but the krithi that followed was bit uncooked . He did not give me great nattaikurinji, i felt he applied bit of self feedback and quickly closed it . I was thinking 3 or 4 musicians always sing fast fillers with long swaras , songs like bantureeti , manavyala, etch with long great swara downpour.Sanjay only sang a plain hindolam krithi but did not sing any swaras . With this musical datapoint i am asserting with a datapoint that singing fast fillers with long swaras sucks lot of air in your lungs and is not that easily achievable. It takes bit more conviction and valour to sing fast fillers as it may jeopadrize the energy that is needed for the rest of your concerts.

07A. RTP in hemavati for 51 mins
13 mins alapana and 7 mins violin return
10 mins taanam
pallavi line was ivanArO aRiyEnE sakhiyE ,, singAra bhavani varum
neraval and swaras in hemavati + bEgada+ varAli + hamsadhwani + yadhukula kambOdhi + sumanesaranjani???(not sure) + shankarabharanam + Durga ? (not sure)
07B. tani for 13 mins

08. dasarE nindasi bEdarE - bhAgeshri - PD
09. sOdanai sumaikku - kApi - PSivan
10. pagaivanukku aRulvAi - ragamaliga (mand+ darbari+ abhEri + durga) - mahakavi bharathiyar

11A. viruththam -aadu mayilAi uRuvEduthu - ??? + sindhu bhairavi - ???
11B. karpagamE kaNN pArai - madhyamavati - psivan
12. nee nama roopamulaku

What a joy it was to hear R T and P. Raga alapana of hemavati was well done just because of the wat it was elaborated. The contours of hemavati were not repeated nor they trespassed into close foreign lands like simm madhyamam . Some people say that taanam can be completely given to violin return with their own logic . Sanjay as vocalist kept the taanam to himself which is what i seek . The sound in taanam was bit muffled for a significant half i was initially thinking for atleast quarter part that sanjay was singing bit closed mouth. I did see the the feedback from sanjay rasikas immediately relayed and one person went and corrected instantaneously. That was great the second half of taanam was well done , i was praying go for mruduangam for second half taanam but it did not happen. Pallavi was a cute neraval line , he sang very slowly and flushed all the ragas quite distinctly with jeeva pidis. Jeev pidis llke ma Ma in begada, varali rava sangathis. The yadhukulakamBodhi i recognized only towards end of violin , shakarabharanam and hamsadhwani was too short but still impactful . I think there was a fleeting sumanesaranjani?? (or was it something else). The last hindustani was slightly long than the other , i think it is durga (or pahadi) ???. I felt for his ideas he could have sung bit more swaras atleast the last hindustani anchor durga?? . All said Pallavi was certainly impactful

Post tani for 13 mins million thanks to percussionist we had one long ragamaliga pagaivanukku arulvAi with its 5 or 6 sets of 4 liners . I have heard this pagaivanakku arulvai so many times from a santhanam casette and once i heard vijaysiva singing in kalarasana it gallops so fast with density of words . Preceeding that a semi long less impactful bhageshri a dasar krithi came in . Sodanai sumaikku in kapi was well done . The short viruththam was less impactful but he beautifully landed in mylapore super vageyakkara and the presiding diety helped with the parachute karpagamE.

Avaneeshwaram Vinu- a kerala based violinist , I think i heard him only once before in my life with thamarakkad. I felt he has great ragabhavam and great press. His returns were sharp and well done. But for the course of the song he was not a shadowy violinist. I did spot neyveli venkatesh in the crowd but i was not disappointed with tanjore murugabhoopathy at all. Murugabhoopathy tuned it well and his play in neraval and swaras in pallavi was well done. He never showcased any unwanted theermanams and disrupted the flow. Rajaganesh played well and gave support. I had to take 5 mins break during tani as i felt bit cold that too when i was caught seated in between two AC ducts which showed 20 and 24 degrees .

On a side note , this review i tried writing completely not looking at the notes at all .I wrote 90 percent of song list inclusive of ragas from memory. I missed the full pallavi line i only got half line and i missed one raga yk kambodhi in swaras of RTP. I went totally blank on the viruththam line.

Considering the mega words of bharathiyar krithi pagaivanakku aRulvaai , the dasar rare kannada sahitya ,, a rare tiirupati narayanaswami nattaikurinjji etc he certainly has elephants memory, what an effort to internalize this much of sahitya for a single concert. He does again and again for last 15 years atleast. I only wish MFAC gives the remote of the AC to me in future concerts .

Overall an excellent concert for 3 solid hours.
