Thanks, Bhagwan. Haven't heard him before but have heard about him. He started with brOchEvArevaru in Sriranjani after a brief SlOkam. Sang lovely svarAs to which M.A.Sundaresan responded warmly. A succinct pantuvarALi rAga, and GNB's special, sundaratara dEham (T) came next. Flowing svarAs again, Sundaresan responding happily and making it even better.
He is starting to sing kIRavANi now...

That was a very good concert of A.S.Murali and his team of wonderful artistes. But the 30 mts speech of Sreemushnam Raja Rao in the beginning was a test for the patience of the music lovers who had assembled to hear the music concert braving the Chennai rains that day. True. It was Sunderkuimar’s birthday. What could have been passed on as a five minutes function was extended for 30 minutes eating into the solid share of the concert time. Hereafter whenever SRR is in the team, we should have a rethinking whether we should attend the concert, notwithstanding the excellent percussion he is capable of providing. He spoke many irrelevant things, to the irritation of everybody.

Everybody knows Sunderkumar and his artistry. SRR started from the importance of Ganjira, Dakshinamurthy Pillai, told about the life and achievements of of Harishankar and then came to SK. He told “ We should all bless him. We should not get jealous and break his arms and legs.” Appreciating Vedant Ramanujam who is doing a yeoman service to the musicians and music, he complimented him for paying good remuneration to artistes. In this context he said “Nobody should blame artistes that they are demanding money. Where else they will go. Can they go for pick pocketing or robbing a bank. They also have to pay college fees, house rent etc.” SK wanted to become a Mridangist. Since there are too many in the field, he chose Ganjira. “A.S. Krishnan is a very good Ghatam player. When he goes abroad, depending on need, he may also take the pot. If he sings vocal, he can also give employment to other four people. So he prefers that.” He had his criticism of the social forum and people’s posting in the forum without verifying the facts. He did not leave Sudha Raghunathan’s daughter marrying a foreigner, Me too, and all such rubbish things. Referring to M.A. Sundaresan he started from Parur Sundaram Iyer and explained how M.S.Anantharaman brought up his children, etc. He spoke many more disgusting things. Keeping the musicians waiting for 30 minutes, they would have definitely lost their mood for giving the concert. The concert started at 7 P.M. In spite of that, they gave a very good concert. Kudos to the artistes.

A.S. Murali gave a very good performance. The pakka vadyams also gave a solid support. M.A Sundaresan played in the MSG style. Never intrusive. SRR Mridangam was very supportive. Sunadam, No banging, clarity of strokes, anticipation, follow up, but fire works in the thani – all embellished the concert. The first thani was for 13 minutes and the second thani was 18 minutes. IN this concert, Sunderkumar introduced two of his disciples. The first disciple Kadanad G. Ananthakrishnan played till the first thani and then he gave place for another Ganjira vidwan- Sivaramakrishnan who continued from then. Both the Ganjira players played very well- matching with the experience and artistry of SRR. They will have a bright future.

Yes I agree with you.I have hear SRR speak in Bangalore at some concerts.Instead of finishing the formality in 5 minutes he stretches it to half an hour talking both relevant and irrelevant matters.

As I had mentioned earlier, two Ganjira vidwans - sishyas of Sreesunderkumar ascended the stage in this concert. Instead of arranging two concerts for them, they shared the same concert. Hence one vidwan played till the first thani, and from thereon, another vidwan took over. To accommodate both the Ganjira vidwans, there were two thanis in the concert.

Thanks for the above link. Listened to the concert (partial). Quite engaging. I listened to A.S. Murali last Dec and always he presents a sampradyamana concert. A disciple of PSN.

In the above concert, he sings Thyagaraja palayasumam in Gowla and Thyagaraja yoga vaibhavam also which do not exactly fall under the Vibhakthi kritis. These kritis deal with the attributes of Thyagaraja- in praise of Thyagaraja of Tiruvarur. However, the Wikipedia has included 13 kritis under Vibhakthi kritis (8 vibhakthis). Hope this is not new thing like 'single mike concert'
