Concerts in IIT Madras have had a greater share of aesthetic and emotional appeal to me . ABout 12 or 14 years if my memory is right I have heard a young Pantula Rama, once a lovely saraswati annaiyE as main by the latest great musician who left us Manakkal Rangarajan. A concert of Sanjay Subrahmanyan with a kedaragowla , and a one memorable Amritha Murali . I also heard a lovely vijaysiva singing a rare pharas. 7 or 8 years back there was a post on the best sound system halls of chennai. I wrote a long post saying it is Kalarasana-Raniseethai Hall And IIT Madras CLT occupying that lovely slot. With Raniseethai hall gone for ever , this is the best hall for sound setup in chennai .I went 15 mins before to this gurunath mess near the CLT to stuff enough food . This college IIT Madras is gifted with space, when you have space and trees and air and even subsidized good quality food , this nice hall CLT is a triple plus .

Moving on this concert was great for most part as the soundscape was perfect. The start was a brief introduction by IIT Music club patron Prof Kamakoti. THe introduction was crisp less than 60 secs , just the name of the artist with their primary gurus names . The only extra blip of info was that the vocalist , violinist and mrudangist are students of three sangeetha kalanidhis. Trichy Murali was mentioned as the student of thayumanavar.

The start was in AndOlika with a brief alapana . AndOlika is more a GNB bastion raga. The varnam was rare and I dont think this varnam was ever sung by either MMI or TVS , considering that the Andolika varnam vaggeyakkara is HMB that is a surprise . Suryaprakash sang very well , felt the volume of vocal was bit low and the mrudangam was also slightly bit volume deficient.

Khamas was elaborated with gusto . No more sound hiccupps . There was exact amplification and more importantly right relative sound balance between the vocal and instruments. Kudos to the two sound engineers they take their time and do exactly the right thing, perhaps this is why IIT M is great. Kamas flow was well done I was only expecting swaras but with both neraval and swaras the double sprint medlay of murali and balaji got started with the krithi seethapathi . The swaras was more like TRS mama the significant part was sung in one cadooble without violin return in one go.

The next was a superb kumudakriya . I immensely like when gifted singers with greater voice throw take up ragas like kumudakriya which also has a certain inbuilt refrain . This raga kumudakriya is a wonder with the dikshitar krithi ardhanAreeshwaram a great krithi with superb patterns in swaras with such rhythmmic tightness in swaras ending with agamAdhi, it was great.

THe devangandhari alapana was a significant musiri touch to me . More shaper kaarvais was well done with a nice follow up. The krithi seethavara is a slow gait structure and he did well. THe contrast with kaa vaa vaa was well received with really superb swara patterns with really great support from the tree van drum and trichy camp. I was surprised with the next marugelarA and I assumed he is creating jayanthashree as a filler to launch into RTP.

What a lovely alapana of Keeravani. Suryaprakash gets this particular raga exceptionally well, very very marked voice texture is coming to him which is intensely more masculine and also has more kaarvai atleast in the last year when compared to previous years. After alapana I was thinking go go go Taanam but i did not get one . The krithi innamum sandeha padalAmA came up next . Lovely thamizh words by GKB with intensity and the line tannai ariginra tavamE peridhU was well done for neraval . THe swaras had a few mins of bit excess kanukku but post that long cycle of sarvalaghu kuraippu swaras was superb. ganakaladhara school Mastery of "singing longer cycle of short burst of sarvalaghu swaras" is intensely gripping and that came in abundance with minimal touch and go return by violinist .

His krithi sangeetha sowbhagyamE came up next. I liked the recording bit more that i heard before than this IIT . Check this link viewtopic.php?f=12&t=6899&p=348226#p348226. I am not a fan of venkatachala nilayam it is bit of low hanging tukkada that does not interest me . Prof kamakoti asked for western note and it came and was well received by students . The last parukulle nalla naadu , with that line veerthile padai veerathile he just appended with few words and was well received by the audience

B Raghavendra Rao play was apt with near zero intrusion. I felt devagandhari alapana he could have slowed down and in keeravani his reply was quite jazzish which was not a big dealas it is keeravAni. His best strength came in returns where he played with such finesse and speed, bowing strength was like his guru TNK .

Tree van drum Balaji as he introduced once in this forum is a brilliant mrudangam artist . He is intensely following the strategy let me lose a few battles to win the WAR to give overall gauravam that mrudangam can give to every concert. He plays in varnam in a restrained fashion and gradually ups the amplification suiting the song thrust , at no stage I heard ever an unwanted ear piercing teermanam. I am assuming he knows how to tune his mrudangam very well . I did notice in both sides there is more steel than leather . Tvm balaji and suryaprakash are just rocking in neraval and swaras, their recent us tour must have helped is my best guess. Trichy Murali was great , lot of restraint during songs but intensely maintaining the energy level of tree van drum , he has not got yet into the habit of dil maange more volume for upa pakkavadhyam .

The hall was bit cold with AC .I walked out during first half of tani to warm up . All said the joy of hearing in IIT Madras is always great with guaranteed consistency of sound AND good visual contact as it is a sloped hall . There were well placed speakers and a very thoughtful and organized sound setup .The IIT Music CLub team organizers just gave classical music its right aural due . I wish IIT sound engineers and Prof kamakOti go around all halls in chennai and do a sound audit and refurbish other halls.All said the quad team rocked with everyone playing their part well.

Overall an excellent concert for 2 hours and 30 minutes.

Yet another greatly appealing concert by Suryaprakash.
I agree with you on Trivandrum Balaji. The more I hear him, the more I realize what a 'anusaraNaiyAna'(sensitive to the vocalist's singing) artiste he is. mara vaNDi mattaLam man's mara (wooden) mattaLam has more steel, you say!

If Sachi is reading this, he would wonder how gaNESa chathurti was sped up! Your' kadooble' makes me wonder :)
kaDubu= kozhukkaTTai :)
