A new composition: Tillana in raga Gorakh Kalyan

Post by ramakriya »

Posting this in General Discussions too, to get some visibility :)

Dear Rasikas,

Wanted to share this composition of mine, that was recently rendered in a concert here in the Bay Area :-)

Please click the following link to listen to the composition. Gorakh Kalyan is a hindustani rAga, and as far as I know, there are not many compositions (of Karnataka sangeeta) in this rAga. There may be some bhajan or other tukkada renditions though.

Vocal: Snidgha Venkataramani
Violin: Nyan Narasimhan
Mrdangam: Abhijit Ramaprasad :) :) :)

I look forward to see the comments/feedback about the composition.

Didn't our Suryaprakash sing an RTP in gorakh kalyan some time ago?

Ramakriya,
Just saw your post. Missed it when you first posted it.

Good going! Good singing too.

Dear Sri Ramakriya,
I watched and listened to your tillana.
The raga reminds me of Andolika.
The composition is a straight forward dance item and suits dance presentation well. The lyrics are simple . enough for abhinaya. I can imagine a neat presentation in an arangetram!

The song itself in actual presentation can do with a musical build up by violin, veena, flute or sitar as a prelude to create a more musical atmosphere. In the lyrical charanam, a bit of voice modulation will add charm, as otherwise the tune a bit scalar.

As a composer, of course, you know best. I am only a lay listener. My best wishes to you.

Good attempt.Congrats!
Goragh kalyan occasionally brushes a Panchama note in the avarohana as I have noticed in Hindustani music concerts.
Am I right?

Thanks Rasikas for listening and your comments.

@Sivaramakrishnan - Yes, it does use alpa-panchama. In fact my composition also has (in my notation), but the vocalist did not choose to sing that sangati.

@Rsachi - Thanks for listening, your observations and your good wishes. They do mean a lot to me.

@arasi - Thank you :) I believe someone did.

@Lakshman - Thanks, as always!

-Ramakriya
