PERAMBUR SANGEETHA SABHA 2016 CONCERTS

Post by thanjavooran »

Concert on 12 03 2016 18 45 hrs

Smt. Anuradha [Suresh] Krishnamurthy Vocal
S/Shri Sherthalai Sivakumar Violin
Serthalai Ananthakrishnan Mirudhangam
N. Sundar Morsing

Ninnukori Mohanam
Tera theeyaga rada Gowlibandu
Nadha thanumanisam Chiththa ranjani S
Anandha nadamaduvar Poorvikalyani R S
Bogeendra sayeenam Kunthaiavarali S
Punniyam podhum Keeravani R N S T
Oruthimaganai pirandu Behag
Mangalam

My observation

1 The concert started at 19 00 hrs though the artistes were present well in advance.
2 The hall was full.
3 The selection of song was good.
4 Poorvi kalyani and keeravani were well responded by Violinist.
5 Thani for 10 mts was nice though noisy.
6 Vocalist voice was heavy with occasional misalignment of sruti during keeravani niraval.
7 To my surprise a professional Tambura player was engaged may be on two reasons. 1. To encourage Tambura Artiste. 2 No disciples readily available.
8 IMO the concert was not a ' bad one ' .
9 Secretary thanked the vidwans at the end mentioning his memories , Anurudha as a child while visiting KVN's house for fixing a concert.
10 KEERAVANI KRITI was in praise of Maha periyavaa . Periyaswamy thooran ?
11 Few ladies wanted to take photographs along with the vocalist. { May be due to small screen idol ]

Thanks for the review. Keeravani song is Punniyam oru koti purindeno by Periaswamy Tooran. KVN used to render this song very soulfully and elaborately in his concerts.

Perambur's Thiruvaiyaru

A write up on PSS in the Perambur Talk issue dt 16 --22 Apr, 2016

Sabha in neighbourhood promotes Carnatic music

Perambur was always known for railways and its asociated industries. Carnatic music was not so popular in the neighbourhood once upon a time and people, who appreciated it, had to travel to other places to listen to a concert or see a dance.

This being the scene, a troupe of music-lovers in the vicinity came together and started the Perambur Sangeetha Sabha. Now a famous music organization in North Chennai, it caters to the musical needs of those residing in the locality.

This Sabha was founded in 1931. The place had a simple setting with thatched roof. This was overlooked as the music knowledge of those in the neighbourhood was an attraction to artistes from South India. Many considered it a privilege to perform in the sabha, says secretary of the sabha, shri V Srinivasan.

Speaking to Perambur Talk, Srinivasan opens up on the pride of the institutions and the stalwarts it hosted.
Right from Ariyakudi Ramanuja Iyengar to Mandolin U Srinivas, everyone has had given concerts here.

Initially, the sabha functioned in a house and later at Rao Bahadur Calavala Cunnan Chetty High School. Now, it functions at Sankaralayam Hall on Meenakshi Street, Perambur.

Says Srinivasan, 'Thanks to Kanchi Kamakoti Trust, that helped us in this growth'

The sabha was honoured with the ' Best Art Institution ' award in 2004 by the Government of Tamilnadu. It has also been nominated to conduct talent promotion series for select artistes by the Tamil Nadu Eyal Isai Nataka Mandram.

'The institution celebrated its silver jubilee in 1956 and golden jubilee in 1982. On these two occasions, the entire music world was present on the dais' says this proud sabha secretary.

He also adds that their dream of the sabha to have its own premises is still to be achieved. Two events are regularly conducted here. Thyagaraja Aradhanai and Chithirai Isai Vizha. Thyagarja Aradhnai is held during Margazhi, while Chithirai Isai Vizha is held during Chithirai.

A. Gopal, an old patron of the sabha, says that the president along with the secretaries and members are striving to improve the activities of the sabha. ' If more donors come forward to contribute, it would be easy for the asociation to achieve the target in all sphere.

CHITHRAI VIZHA CONCERTS
18 04 2016 MONDAY

Smt Lalitha Mohan Vocal
S/Shri R. Kailasam Violin
Kumbakonam Ramakrishnan Mirudhangam
R. Thyagarajan Kanjira

Gajanana Varidho Begada R S
Bajare Manasa AAberi R S
Sadhanane sadhadham Kamaaz R S
Venkata saila Hamir Kalyani R S
Sri ramapaadhama Amrita vahini
Yaro Ivar Yaro Byravi R N S and T
Devar nama

The concert started at 18 50 hrs. Kritis were sung in quick succession without any time lag. Niraval was missing in all excepting Byravi. Lalitha Mohan is from North Chennai, a Perambur resident. An MSc in Music and M Phil. Learnt music initially from Cuddalore Subramaniam and then from T R S and M L V and an expert singer in Western Music too. Kailasam a senior disciple of TNK. Ramakrishnan is a disciple of Kumbakonam Rajappa Iyer. There was a last minute change. Instead of Ghatam, Thyagarajan S/o N Ramani played Kanjira. Violin frequently adjusted the sruti. Thani lasted for 10 mts. There was no bee lining during Thani [ a special feature of P S S concerts ] and all sat and enjoyed. An OK concert. IMO sound was high and little jarring. Since acute summer organizers can ensure that all the fans are running without inconveniencing rasikas.

19 04 2016 Tuesday 2nd Day

S/Shri T N S Krishna Vocal
Pakkala Ramadoss Violin
N C Bharadwaj Mirudhangam

Eranapai Thodi R S
Vathapi Ganapathi Hamsadwani R N S
Ankarakam Suruti started with slokam
Ramanukku mannan Hindolam R N S
Ramabajaka Anandha Byravi
Ethavunara Kalyani R N S T

The concert started at 19 05 hrs
Though other musicians were present Pakkala entered by 19 00 hrs hence the delay. Secretary was restless till his arrival.
Totally a well planned menu.
TNS K was frequently wetting his throat and emptied two flasks
He employed kathri swaram in kalyani.
Pakkala's Hindolam was good.
Bhradwaj did his duty well.
The mike system was good and so the ventilation. I could not stay back beyond 21 00 hrs and left after Kalyani. Organizers should start the concert by 18 45 hrs and plan accordingly.
A good concert.

thanks for reviewing the sangeetha sabha concerts,we have scheduled to have the concerts daily between 6/45 to 9 pm and due to unforeseen circumstances like the artists reaching the premises delayed due to the traffic and other reasons the prog starts but late by 10 to 15 mts and ends similarly. hence it is unavoidable.its also a bit strain for the organizers to spend more time.but for the sake of good music one has to compensate.

I have heard personally Peramabur Sangeetha sabha has only done great things in the historic past. Like for eg Flute Mali was invited most number of times in perambur and we are all indebted to Perambur.

Having said that , can the concert atleast go for 2 and 1/2 hours - that way perambur rasikas also will have a chance to likely hear RTP . Food for thought . By the way it appears apart from Arkay Ramakrishnan and Mudhra/Radha Bhaskar ,you are the only person from chennai sabhas who is coming to the forum and posting . Keep them coming Shri Srinivasan - best wishes.

it is generally observed that the rasikas are comfortable in sitting for 2 hrs patiently for a concert and with the advent of other attractions in media like tv and others people have more choice for sports teleserials etc especially when thani takes place its usual practice for almost every one to depart.
in this fast word to make audience sit for 2 hrs is a great task and if they sit they are appreciable.

I respectfully disagree Sir. People who have come have decided atleast for the few hours that TV is not needed. Kudos to them. I guess the bigger issue is no perambur rasikas should ever feel that their sabha is only playing second fiddle to mile Ah Pour . As years roll by People should have the motivation to go to perambur than mylapore. I do know before I was born Flute Mali has said in record that Perambur is his favourite place - now I forget the then seceratary name - was he sethuraman ???. There is fast world yes but when any one enters the sabha the world is just the same irrespective of the era sir.

Just curious I am asking you openly , I am assuming you would not mind any artist taking RTP right and would not mind taking it upto say 2 and 1/2 to 3 hours. I just would like to get the opinion of a forthcoming chennai sabha seceratary which is a miracle by itself ?

The Anandabhairaavi song could be Ramabhadra Raa raa by Bhadrachalam Ramadas. TNS sings that often.

Shri maruthidasan

Your mention of the following
' we are surprised and disappointed in not seeing a review of O S Arun concert yesterday at PSS
hope fully it will be seen shortly '

Really happy to know that a sabha secretary is eager to go through the review of the concerts and I feel honoured.
Yes ! Could not attend the concerts on 20th and 21st due to personal important domestic engagement. However to maintain continuity, with the permission of the forumites giving below the song list collected from one of the regular rasikas.

Azhaga Azhaga Suddha dhanyasi
Nirajakshi Kamakshi Hindolam R
Endha Mudhdho Bindhumalini
Saroja Thala Netri Sankarabharanam R N S T
Slokam

My observation

The concert started at 19 10 hrs since the main artiste entered at 19 00 hrs only.
His son/ disciple associated with him in vocal support
Did not venture Niraval and only interested in Swaraprastharam
The sound Technician was made to run very frequently for adjusting the mike, speaker and volume correction.
He was giving instructions now and then in the middle of the concert and ' Mirudhangam ' was playing reminding Harikatha.
He totally lost control over his voice and was not pleasant though his disciple was assisting him with a separate mike.
IMO he may concentrate more on Harikatha, Vina and Key board. Shertalai gave a very nice support through out the concert. His Sudhdha dhanyasi and Hindolam were excellent. As usual Mannarkoil played smoothly and Thani was crisp.

It is learnt that there was a surprise visit of sri.Bala Periyava on 20th while going to some local temples at Perambur, he came exactly around 6 pm and stayed till 6/30 and gave anugrahabashyam. He has blessed the PSS saying that they were doing great service for the sake of music in north chennai and all the local residents may make use instead of going all the way to south and blessed os arun also. he was very happy and excited.

Thanjavooran,
Thanks for taking the trouble in bringing us your reports/reviews/song lists of the Perambur season. Thanks to your friend for the song lists and to Maruthidasan--and as Rajesh says, it's a welcome thing to hear from an office bearer of a sabha, and for him to be posting at Rasikas.org.

Good to hear that our 'mridangam' Balaji played in his usual way--smoothly, as you mention.

Did TNS really sing two varNams in a row? kalyANi and tODi? If so, to emphasize that varNams
really belong at the very beginning of a concert? Just kidding!

S/Shri G R S Murthy Veena [ Disciple of G N Dhandapani ]
Mannarkoil J Balaji Mirudhangam
Dr Nerkunram Shankar Kanjira

Valaji Navaraga varnam
Prnamamyaham Gowla R N S
Thelisrama Poorna chandrika S

Hindolam R T
Samajavara gamana P N S T
Hamsa nandhi ?
Karpagame Madhyamavathi

My observation

The concert started exactly at 18 50 hrs with minimum rasikas though the artistes were present from 18 20 hrs.
In fact the delay was due to the audience.
An effectively planned and well disciplined concert.
Sukam and Sowkyam were there through out.
There was perfect coordination between Mannarkoil and Nerkunram and both jointly blasted the Thani session.
Murthy mentioned that he started the Sri Ranjani Pallavi with opening line Mirudhanga thalamu just to honour Mannarkoil
An excellent concert in total in this series so far.

24 04 2016 Sunday 18 00 hrs

For a change a Bajan by Kamakshi Mandali took place which is in Perambur for more than 4 decades.

The group is led by Mrs.Vasanthi who is a dedicated singer and more interested in Bhajans and she does Radha kalyanam in Annadana Samajam near Sankaralayam in a grand manner every year.
A very young lad Ashwin sang wonderfully about Ambal with enthusiasm and dedication.

This Bajan immediately followed the GB of the PSS. Strangely, to my surprise the President and Secretary mentioned about our Forum and thanked its services in updating the events in North Chennai.

The concert started at 18 45 hrs . The hall was full
Simply Sisters said to sound technician the volume arrangement is not good. He immediately did the needful and then it was ok.
Since this Mandapam is very high and no false roofing no proper sound effect is achieved.
Vijay Ganesh is a student LGJ school and also an I T consultant. His playing of Kamaz and Madhyamavathi was good.
There was a change in Mirudhangam. Instead of K R Ganesh, Madipakkam suresh played. Secretary thanked Madipakkam for coordinating with other Artistes to reach the venue well in advance. No RTP so far excepting O S Arun. In general the concert was good and Thani was excellent, both artistes showing their talent nicely in 10 mts. As usual all sat till the end.

Shunmukapriya R T P T
Satha priyae Shunmukapriye Geethapriye Ragamalika Rasikapriya, Kokila priya
Varuvano
Kandhanin azhagilChidambaram Pogamal

My observation

An excellent concert started exactly at 18 45 hrs with minimum Rasikas. Slowly the hall became full.
He has an open voice [ Gathra Saareeram ]
A very good selection of songs with RTP
Violinist is a disciple of Kanyakumari. Though he accompanied nicely in some places was little unpleasant . His Mohanam and panthuvarali swarams were good.
Mirudhangam was good and Thani was excellent. He was asked to adjust the sruti by the vocalist and also by Maharajapuram Srinivasan who was just sitting in the front row.
As a great grandson of MVI he justified his talent. Secretary in his thanks giving mentioned that when he visited Srinivasan for inviting to give a concert he suggested Ganesh in his place thus paving way for youngsters to come up. Ganesh recently released ' Parambariyam ' a music Album to his credit. A request to the organizers. If the concert is started in time when all the artists are present obviously Rasikas will also come in time automatically .

Sir your review on Mahrajapuram Ganesh Viswanath is good and your request in it to begin the concert in 18/45 hrs is most welcome.
since the artist are all coming form very long distance almost in south Chennai we request them to be here at Perambur by 6/30 itself and requesting them to start 5 pm form their residence. almost all the artists abide and came in time excepting on 2 occasions on the inaugural Pakkala Ramadoos and on the 22nd Sri T.N.Seshagopalan were bit late.our intention is to start in time and we organizers come to the hall 5/30 pm with keeping our mobile open for the artist to assist in getting the route directed.beyond this we can not do anything.
thanks for your valuable suggestions and keep reviewing.

Seethamma Mayamma Vasantha R S
Nagumomu Aberi N S

Ninnuvina Nama Navasa kannada

Neenadi rupa Byravi R N S
Raja Raja tharanive Niroshta
Rama Rama Guna Simmendhra Madhyamam R N S T
Rama manthra jaba
Om nMo narayana Karna ranjani
Thillana

My observation

The concert started at 18 45 hrs
A well planned concert with different compositions.
Violinist's Hamsanatham , Byravi and simmendhra madhyamam were good.
Mirudhangam was fine and so the thani
The vocalist is an AIR Bangalore Artiste. An MA in music. She has given 1800 concerts so far. Secretary recollected an incident. Six months back she performed at Shastri Hall with very minimum Rasikas but at this concert the hall was full . She sang a rare raga Niroshta w/o Ma and pa a composition by HMB. The lips will not touch each other. This is the first time I hear this song. In the present trend most of the Vidwans avoid Niraval instead, sing elaborate swaras. The 2 hrs 15 mts concert was excellent.

Dear Forum Members & Sri Thanjavooran,

I sincerely thank Perambur Sangeetha Sabha for organizing my concert as part of their Chithirai Isai Vizha Celebrations last Tuesday. Thank you very much Sri Thanjavooran for your review with compliments and best wishes. It was a delightful experience and an honour to perform in PSS as the fourth generation musician from the Maharajapuram Lineage.

Regards,
Maharajapuram S. Ganesh Viswanathan

Mangalam

My observations

A very good song list. Started exactly at 18 45 hrs
Key board is a disciple of Mandolin Srinivas and his playing was good in Mohanam and Kiravani
Poongulam is the disciple of Sabesa Iyer initially and later underwent training under Srimushnam
The second mirudhangam is the disciple of Poongulam
Both played suitably accompanying the main artistes beautifully

The President Dr N. Parameswaran in his speech appealed to the senior citizens to bring their wards too for such concerts initiating them to listen to C M
He mentioned though there are number of Music school in Perambur area none of the students were present with their teachers.
Secretary thanked all the office bearers for their active participation and coordination in making this series a success.
Embar thanked the audience for their presence and requested to bring as many Rasikas to enroll as members.
The artistes were honoured with Prasadam by Bhatter of the nearby Vaishnava Temple and then with Golden shawl by the president.
This was the last concert in this series and also the best one.

Quite an impressive festival at Perambur! Appreciate the efforts which went into it. The organizers bring music to many who can't easily make it to the city. Hope they in turn attend more concerts locally on a regular basis.

A few artistes had trouble getting there on time. They have to adjust their time for travel to suit traffic patterns (snarls?), After all the listeners , some of them professionals, go to their work place without being late for meetings, and they have to do it every day :)

Thanjavooran,
Thanks for bringing your Perambur Sangeetha Sabha experiences to share with us. Others too.

Satya (along with his father) is part of the Rasikas.org family. We have heard him play from a very young age so sweetly. No wonder, the finale concert where he played with Embar Kannan turned out to be the best for you :)

Ashwin,
Welcome to the forum. Excellent! You closely watch for the review after attending the concerts. Yes. The two numbers missed my attention. Happy that one more rasika/ forumite to take up the North Chennai reviews. My wishes to you.

Arasi,
Thanks for your kind words. As this Sabha is close by I never miss and share it with the forum.

IIRC, the combination of Embar Sri Kannan and (our) Satya is that of uncle and nephew...So, the chemistry must have been unique.
Sri Thanjavooran - thank you for meticulously reviewing the concerts! Makes us feel like we were there enjoying both the concert and the ambience.

The Raga Niroshta and the kriti of HMB sung by Smt Anupama reminds of Dasa kumara Charitham a Kavyam by Thandi in which one prince due to gum boil and dry lips speaks with out touching lips and the slokas of the entire sargam with padams without Pa and Ma IIRC. Our pundits Raschi, Cmlover, PB can throw more light on this.

Great observation Sir. I too have felt that Muttiah Bhagavatar may have derived the idea for this rAga from the niroSTya passage in the Dasha-kumAra-caritam. Two small observations -

1. The KumAra had to speak without the p, ph, b, bh ,m sounds, not because of gum boils, but because he had returned home after a long time, and in the course of his reunion with his sweetheart, she bit at his lips so hard, that they were swollen the next day, and it hurt when he used the OSThya consonants. An exceptional tribute to this literary mastery of daNDi is Isabelle Onians's translation of the Dasha-kumAra-caritam for the Clay Sanskrit series, wherein she has translated this section eschewing the labial p, ph, b, bh, v consonants in the English translation as well.

It is a stupendous feat - a literary master-act that is a befitting tribute to the poet from KAncipuram.

2. NiroSTh(y)a is technically not the correct name for this rAga - it refers to a class of 36 rAga-s derive from the mela set, each of which is a niroSThya. The 29th niroSThya [janya of ShankarAbharaNa] which has been enlivened by Muttiah Bhagavatar's genius, is called PutrikA. Artistes from andhrA will only refer to it by this name.
