Best wishes to the wonderful guru! Sivakami - a wonderful report, with understated humor! I did not know that Malladi Sri Ravikumar's wife was also a singer. Is she also a disciple in the illustrious parampara of Sri Pinakapani?

Thanks Venkatakailasam, for the nice photos of the paramaguru..
Someone was telling she is also trained in music from a college, from Hyd.Her name was not mentioned in the list of disciples from that illustrious paramapara...So, I dont know...
Needless to mention, under whose tutelage she must be, now....

Re: Dr. S.Pinakapani
My mother's uncle was a colleague of Sri Pani in the Visakapatnam Army Hospital / Government Hospital for many years. He used to mention that he was serious medical practioner and at the same time was learning more and more music. But he has not seen him sit in one place for hours to practice. He used keep humming all the time and he used to wonder with his full time practice, how he managed to learn so much and have such a HUGE REPERTOIRE. Perhaps one of the largest amongst the CM musicians (covering the entire gamut of Vaggeyekars - Leaving none).
He was a body builder. Perhaps the weight lifting took a toll at later stages on his body.
His music is special because he has taken the best of all great musicians by constantly following them and developed his own style. It is an amalgam of the great musicians such as Ariyakudi, GNB, Musiri, SSI etc a whole lot of great Hindustani musicians ....
It is said GNB heard him sing a Sindhubhairavi in a AIR concert and asked him to teach him. Apparently this was in the Hindustani style of Abdul Karim Khan.
A GIFTED/GREAT MUSICIAN AND LOVELY HUMAN BEING - HIS MUSIC SPEAKS FOR ITSELF WHICH HAS PRODUCED SOME OF THE FINEST MUSICIANS.
Voleti used to write to him to ask him to notate a particular kriti if he had to learn and based on the notation, voleti used to breathe life into that kriti. Such was the caliber of the disciples
. Voleti and Nedunuri have imbibed a lot of his musical qualities and like Sri Pani, Voleti's repertoire was HUGE too.

Voleti's voice is close to Sr. Pani. Not Sri Nedunuri. And Voleti followed the Pani bani steadfastly.rajeshnat wrote:I did not hear Dr Pani singing , when I heard his recordings it sounds his sishya nedanuri had nearly same voice and texture . Sri Pani had a very few concerts in the TN - Chennai (Mecca) belt. Thanks to the GREAT RASIKAS community of TN/Chennai who perhaps had no clue of such a musician and the 100 odd SABHAS that are there in Chennai, which are more concerned about gate collection rather than GOOD MUSIC. He used to perform only in Indian Fine Arts pretty regularly until 1989 (only during the season).
For some reason he was termed a Musicologist than a performing musician. That is the loss to chennai.
But for rasikas such as G N Raghavan, Spencer Venugopal and disciples such as Voleti and Nedunuri, this Great musician would not have risen to prominence in TN.

Hey, to the credit of Chennai, Pinakapani was given Sangeetha Kalanidhi award by Music Academy in 1984. Some other musicians did not even get that highly sought after recognition. The music of some musicians lives on and they have left an indelible mark.
However, I agree with your sentiment; several great musicians (the list is a very, verylong list) could not get the opportunities to perform at Chennai sabhas; since rasikas only flock to concerts of popular musicians. That trend continues even today ! So, the rasikas can make a difference by supporting good music.

He was awarded the Sangeetha kalanidhi for more musicology and not as a performing musician. This man was a fantastic musician and a great musicologist. People could not appreciate his music. It is as simple as that. Similar to a MDR. Now we all rave about MDR and his music.
Again MA Sangeetha Kalanidhi award is not a bench mark (or rather any award). An organisation muddled in politics !!!

Re: Dr. S.Pinakapani
On 12th August 2012, Shanmukhananda Sabha gave a grand honour to Shri Pinakapani through his son by celebrating his centenary year. On the dais was none other than Shri Nedunuri who performed a 2 hour brilliant concert explaining the nuances of his Guru's style of teaching, his manodharmam, speciality etc...
I had to leave by 9.15 pm when the Malladi brothers took the stage .
Earlier , the students of Shri Pinakapani also sang 5 beautiful varnams composed by Shri Pinakapani .
Will upload the photos and videos of Nedunuri's programme shortly...

Re: Dr. S.Pinakapani
Some details of the programme on 12 August.
Dr Saraswati Vidyarthi and daughter K. Lahari presented five varnams of Dr Pinakapani in ragas Malahari, Varali, Kharaharapriya, Kalyani and Ritigoulai. Varali and Kalyani were sung in two speeds and the whole presentation was sparkling, with rich gamakas and unusual raga patterns. Accompanied by Shivakumar Anantaraman (violin) and Sriram Subbaraman (mridangam).
Then was Nedunuri, accompanied by Varadarajan, Ravi Kumar (vocal support) and MLN Raju. The contents were unusual.
Kambhoji ragam followed by Lambodaram avalambe of Vasudevachar (?), neraval swaram at Surabhusura - presented in masterclass mode.
Kannadagoula ragam, one line of Sogasujuda tarama!
Begada ragam, interspersed with Todi then again Begada then again Todi !!
Kotinadulu in Todi
Veganivu in Surati - memorable
The whole atmosphere was filled with raga, in the style of Pinakapani, and Nedunuri was in leisurely demo cum presentation mode, but serious music, undoubtedly. At one point in Begada, he said, "This one is mine", in contrast to several phrases earlier on, which he said was Dr Pani's bani. It was great to hear. Also, the richness of voice was evident even in contrast to Ravi Kumar - who is no doubt younger and with a stronger voice. Also, Nedunuri gently but firmly insisted on the second sangati in the pallavi of the Kambhoji song (ambasuta etc.) when Ravi Kumar jumped the gun a little and had gone on ahead.
Could not stay for the Malladis.
The short speeches by Dr Gopal (Pinakapani's son), another doctor (a mere 85 years old and a student and later, associate of Dr Pani) and then Nedunuri were nice. That part of the programme was brought to an abrupt end by Nedunuri announcing that he could not speak more and wanted to sing instead!

They have also produced a DVD on him that was previewed at the celebrations held at Sri Krishna Gana Sabha on Aug 25.It would take a bit of time before the DVD is available for general release.

Re: Dr. S.Pinakapani
I read with interest the interview conducted and published by Gamakam. But I was shocked to read the statement attributed to Pinakapani Garu on the performance ability or practice of Andhra Vidwans and Vidushis during his times. It is stated that Vidwans and Vidushis hailing from Andhra were not singing Neravals and RTPs. It is totally incorrect. Neravals with more of scale based sangathis and less of gamakams were being resorted to and was recognized as Andhra Bani. Many Great Maestros/Maestros were performing RTP's. Just to name a Great Maestro-Guru of Sandhyavandanam Srinivasa Rao, Pakka Hanumanthachar was being hailed as"Pallavi" pakka Hanumanthachar by Ariyakudi. To name few Great Maestros-Chintalapalli Venkat Rao, Chittor Subrahmania Pillai, Vinjamuri Varadaraja Iyyengar, Sandhyavandanam Srinivasa Rao, Mangalampalli Balamuralikrishna, Nookala Chinna Sathyanarayana, Kommanduri Seshadri, Dwaram Venkataswamy Naidu, Annavarapu Ramaswamy, Maralla Kesava Rao, Emani Shankara Shastry, Manchala Jagannatha Rao etc were known for Pallavi singing. There were Endaro Mahanubhavulu and Vandaneeyulu, in addition to the names given.
Tanjore Bani's rich repertoire and rich gamaka based raga alapana-neraval were brought to Andhra by three Great Maestros-Parupalli Ramakrishnaiah Panthulu, Pinakapani and Sandhyavandanam Srinivasa Rao.
I wanted to correct the distortion of history of Andhra Music, as made out in the interview. Having enjoyed a very close relationship with the Great Maestro Pinakapani Garu, I am unable to believe such wrong statement was made by Pinakapani Garu.
