Programme Details

The Nagaswaram has a long and illustrious history in our musical heritage. The loudest wind instrument, it held an important position in an age of open spaces, large gatherings and music 'unplugged', as it were. It is a 'Mangala Vadya', used in all auspicious occasions, particularly weddings and temple rituals. Playing the nagaswaram requires enormous lung power in addition to skill. Its music has evolved in a very unique and brilliant manner, and is known to have influenced the music of many stalwarts in the field of Carnatic music, especially in the past century.

We are happy to present a dialogue-cum-demonstration between leading Nagaswaram exponent, Vidwan Vyasarpadi G Kothandaraman, and Smt Radhika Balakrishnan, a vocalist from Bangalore pursuing her doctoral research in nagaswaram music, where Vidwan Shri. Kothandaraman will share his insights on the nagaswaram and its journey to the present. Vidwan Shri. Kothandaraman will elaborate on the unique features and techniques of the instrument. He will also demonstrate the special features and techniques of manodharma and krithi rendition. We aim to bring to rasikas, the nuances and the finer points of the nagaswaram tradition. The discussion is designed to allow for interaction with the audience.
